You said in the OP that MMR doesn't carry over if you are inactive an entire season. What does that actually mean? Say I am in platinum and I don't play any games in an entire season. Does that mean that if I start playing in the following season, I will not be distributed in the platinum league?

It means that you will have to play 5 placements and get placed in a league without reference to your earlier MMR. It's like wiping the MMR slate clean, almost. I say "almost" because if you have been playing team games every season, for example, and you skip a season in 1v1, when you return, your opponents in those 5 placements will be biased higher or lower by your team league performance, which in turn at some earlier point was probably influenced by your two-seasons-earlier 1v1 performance in the same way.

Say there are two diamonds trying to get promoted, at the start of the season, one has 1050 points with no bonus pool and the otehr has 1000 points with 70 bonus pool they didn't play out. Would the 1000 point player get promoted over the 1050? Possibly. The 1000-point player shows a potential of getting 1070 (or more, or less) but nothing guaranteed, whereas the 1050 player has already proven he is capable of 1050. The promotions are determined by fixed MMR boundaries and a stability factor, so it doesn't take whomever is the better of the two example players. If they're both over the threshold, they both get promoted.

I don't know, but I'd suspect that it's just the display not catching up with what's going on on the server -- i.e. it has no effect.

Blizzard has said that you should have to repeat your placements if you skip a season, but it's very possible that's an oversimplification, that they've changed the rules since making that statement, or that there's a bug of some kind.

As 1v1 MMR and random team MMR is connected so that if either type is played in previous season, neither MMR will be reset in the new season: "Special Note: Random Team MMR is linked with 1v1 MMR. This means that if you did not play any 1v1 for one season, but did play a Random Team game, your 1v1 MMR would still carry over to the next season, and vice versa."

Expected behavior? Or is this different from the expectations on how demotion works?

That said, tanking your rating like that screws with the health of the rating system (by adding random wins and losses to people unlucky enough to face you on the way down or the way back up), it makes the game a lot less fun to play for your lower-level opponents, and throwing games to manipulate your rating has been specifically labeled a TOS violation by Blizzard. I can't see why some cheap, unfair wins are worth it.

Last season was slightly longer than 8 weeks so yes, bonus pools for that season will be a little higher which means point inflation. I don't know what you mean by "now" because GM isn't unlocked yet.

I don't know what you mean by "now" because GM isn't unlocked yet. Well I mean the estimated stable rating for someone. I recall a few seasons ago it was posted that the cutoff was about 1400 with bonus, or 770 before bonus, in order to get GM. I seem to recall the next season after that being the same length, but it increasing to about 1500 with bonus, judging from who actually got in. Then we had a tremendous number of people above 2000, that just a result of a longer season? Cause it almost seems like GM would have been nearly 2100 last season, and that's nearly 2 extra months of bonus pool, and the season didn't seem that much longer. Basically, is an estimated stable rating of 770 before bonus still the expected GM cutoff (ofc it depends on the exact 200, but blizz posted at one point it was about 770 before bonus at the current time).

First, I am in diamond, played once every season to prevent mmr reset. I came back to SC2 during ladder lock and played shit tons, winning approx 70%. I played with other Diamond players and sometimes Master. New season kicks in, now ALL of the matches I face are in platinum and sometimes gold. Weird thing is, they are always favored (meaning I get bonus points for winning, losing less for losing). So far, in this season, I've played around 50 games winning around 40~ish due to my sheer macro alone -.-
