$400k.. holy fuck. That is a lot of money. Now pro gaming houses can start popping up in California, and we can actually like more than 3 of the players competing in it. Badass.

I don't see any rule against Koreans participating. It just says you need an NA account, which is really easy to get.

Is it even feasible to play from Korea? Lag and all.
Suppose it doesn't hurt to try and make it to the LAN, but still.

It's definitely feasible. It's much more feasible than the GSL. Worst case scenario is the Koreans have to move to NA to participate and then GSL and NASL are on the same level. Except when you get into the NASL, you can move to NA and instantly participate in a $100k tournament, but when you get into GSL, you live there for a month to compete in a qualifier tournament worth $1500 :o

I'm so glad to see this written out so clearly. With the NASL, MLG and various other North American tournaments, and the relative ease of travel across the Atlantic for several major European tournaments, I see little reason why USA team houses shouldn't start appearing.

Whether this means American players congregating to the same city or state, European teams moving into a practice house within the US, or even Korean teams making the jump. (Although I would, unfortunately, see the latter as very unlikely to happen.)

The key piece of information that's being ignored when people are attempting to compare NASL and GSL (and as they will inevitably do so during the coming months) is that there are several other tournaments outside of the NASL with hundreds of thousands of dollars between them of prize money between them, too. Moreover, the entry threshold for most of these Western tournaments is so much lower than anything in Korea, in terms of both skill and time.

On the subject of HQ stream prices: Charge more. Much more. People will pay.

Never been more happy to slap down $20.

I thought this would be the release of sixpoolgaming.com aswell but that's just something completely different huh... Why is the trailer so epic then

I'll definately support this!
Great announcement, except for the incredible prizepool it was kind of expected.
Very excited!

Well putting all the negativity aside, I just want to congratulate Incontrol, Gretorp and the Gosu crew. You guys would know the challenges 10x better than anyone posting here, so best of luck and hoping for a great addition to the tournament scene.

Are you serious? Almost entirely invited players, with self-qualifying players having to win 1000 man tourneys to get in? Terrible, terrible way to format this. Why couldn't you do a GSL style qualification instead? SC2 is still so new, and to be frank, compared to korean teams north american teams are a joke besides a select few. There is no methodical system for players getting progaming licenses here like in korea for bw, so how is an up and coming player supposed to get involved? Just hope to get recruited by a team?

This should be the overwhelming sentiment for this announcement. Of course you'll get the die hard fanboys who just want to compare it to the GSL all day, but most of us are super stoked. I think it'll take a season or two to really work out the kinks and fine tune the process, but after that it should become much easier/smoother.

I'd rather see a series of qualifiers rather than a voting system to determine players, but thats one of those things that will work itself out as the seasons progress.

GL NASL, incontrol, Russ, and the rest of the cast & crew! You'll get an insta-subsription from me when the time comes!

Well Jeff, you talked a lot about the weakness of other Productions, now it's time for you - feel the pain =)

Im happy because you begging me to be! It's like plz don't criticize me ;D - funny end

Btw. awesome announcement, i really hope NASL got a better production, but i guess with that kind of money, professionalism comes right behind it..

$100,000 prize pool at $20 each.

5000 subscribers needed to break even on the prize pool.

3 months of casting for incontrol and gretorp is like another $30,000.
Developer cost for 3 months is another $15,000.

Studio cost $10,000 for 3 months.

Looking like they need like 7-8k subscribers to make it barely profitable.

Meh, I'll be one of them. I don't care if it fails, what the hell is 20$ to me (as a poor student who has to loan money to afford rent) in the big scheme of things?

If people arn't ready to pay for watching this then don't. I am cause I love eSports and want it to succeed.
If this nosedives into oblivion then yeah g.g. we'll have to wait another 10 years before big shot companies are ready to risk petty sums on a medium (esports) that has huge godamn potentiall.

If there only income comes from subscribers, yes it would take a lot to be profitable. However, I can only hope that they would be able to get sponsorships from companies like MLG does to cover a huge chunk of that prize money.

They let the players do it online so that it isn't that expensive, they et players from all places participate and even throw a open for everyone with a spot in the +layoffs!

Then they organize a offline event for 16 players with a 500$ help for travels and even so people complain?

This is clearly the best tournament outside of GSL and is open for everyone in the world without traveling so SK to live the korean progamer life that any foreigner hates, this is great imo

Is GSL a better production? yes it is now (booths, everything in a studio, more players, more skill)
Does GSL have a higher skill pool? yes i believe so
Does GSL have better casting? that might be because i really like tastosis but incontrol can be very entertaining and guests like djwheat, day9, gretorp etc.. looks very good
Is nasl awesome and the best thing ever for foreign SC2? of course it is.. come on 400k!!! regular games, good production, idra. tyler, machine, europeans, koreans etc..

and we still have dreamhack, MLG. ESWC. WCG and other good lans

it's looking good for foreigns players and teams and i bet the koreans will be way more active in foreign tourneys and that is very good for us because we love to see what we can do versus the koreans and this kind of money will insure more players will commit to SC2 outside of korea!

fuck yeah esports, but here's my concerns

are the EU players and US players really as good as the top koreans? Only idra and jinro can compete with them? I just don't think it's as big as people make out to be, a 400 thousand dollar prize pool doesn't suddenly make it awesome, I still think most players will prefer GSL just because of the skill level, what's up MVP most fun player to watch ever

Also, are the players gonna be in booths? and only 10 people in the studio at a time? Just seems to me like an EG masters cup that lasts 9 weeks, only thing i'm excited for is the finals.

Big fan of everything but Gretorp casting. I know he tries and all that, but he mispeaks and stutters too much to be a caster for such a professional event. There are many more qualified casters available that would do a much better job casting this event. I'd much rather incontrol solo it than listen to Gretorps casting. I think if you're trying to sell your product to the community you need to find someone better than a Gretorp to be co casting.

Eventhough everybody was expecting something like 100*GSL only in NA this is damn sweet! A big step towards getting e-sports big in the western countries. Luckily it uses a 'good game' rather than previous attempts like CPL and that other tournament with fifa/guitar hero and CS:S? (if i'm not mistaken) also in NA.
Hope this do lifts of e-sports, or at least Starcraft2!

I wrote a little blog about this, but I think I'll just share my two cents here.

The North American Star League has the potential be the single most important ‘event’ in western eSports history. This league, if ran well, could be what changes everything. This could be what nerds who love competitive gaming have been holding out on for years. I know I can count on the league to provide us with fantastic competition. I’m hoping that I can count on the league to change the way the rest of the western world thinks about eSports.

Fingers crossed, guys.

They get on teams the same way they do now, competing in tournaments and winning. There is no shortage of sc2 tournaments like Craftcups and Go4SC2 to make your name in.
