Hi, I'm doing some research into the possibility of offering real money Esports betting.
As I don't post here very often I'll quickly introduce myself: I'm Luke Cotton and I manage Power Gaming who you may have heard of, and I've been working in Esports for over 5 years. I hope that this topic is in the correct forum / doesn't break any rules, apologies if it's in the wrong place.
I have a company that's interested in the idea in principle but we need some statistical research in order to really push it forwards, so if you could provide even the slightest bit of information I'd be most thankful as it not only could offer an interesting proposition for you from a financial point of view, but could really help to push Esports forwards into the mainstream, and also offering betting on it helps the case for us to get Government recognition of Esports as an official sport (outside of Asia, ofcourse). It'd be pretty cool to be able to tell your mates that they can bet on you to win games I'm sure!
For the sake of this post, assume that there is a way to prevent match fixing (through limits, through bet monitoring etc.). I know that Pinnacle are offering it already for a very small number of SC2 events, and as they don't have XLBet to base odds on any more I have no idea if they will continue. More bookmakers can only lead to better odds as well, right
I've made a survey and would appreciate it if you could fill that out (or as well as posting any general discussion / questions!)

Thanks very much for your help.

Yet another person trying to make money of gambling addictions. People have been posting about this alot and all the threads get closed probably a good thing tho. When you have betting at worth while stakes it always leads to corruption. =\

I'm not really into gambling. But if it's gonna push esports further, I'm not gonna bitch about it.

If you have any problems with gambling I encourage you to visit http://www.gamcare.org.uk/
There are ways to prevent corruption (i.e. bet limiting, bet monitoring, only betting on games where significant amounts of money are at stake etc.)

gambling addiction? why does everyone have to suffer because there are some people who take it overboard. Some people do like to bet here and there and it also encourages more people to watch. I know if i got money on a game i would normally not watch, i will watch it.

Just try to avoid another betting scandal.

Dude, I heard they sell coffee because some people are addicted to it. As one of my favourite mods on TL would say:" Deal with it "
And you can't blame the service provider for the "inevitable" corruption.
If this is good for the growth of SC2 and community, I welcome it. Mods make the decision(if it's good or not), not you and me.

I'm sure football's popularity in the States has NOTHING to do with gambling

I'm interested in betting on everything, given a chance.
Betting on sports is hardly gambling. If I could have put down money on IMMvp this GSL, I would have more money.

I'm betting on GSL with pinnacle at the moment, they seems to have good bookmakers, but not perfect so sometimes you can find great odds if you follow the GSL and the korean players closely like I do. Sometimes some big names like Maka or Fruitdealer are mega favorite, just because of the name, so it's one of the only sport when you can be ahead of the bookmakers. I'm betting of all kind of sports (well, mostly soccer and volleyball), but I never had such a high winrate since I bet on esport. Sometimes pinnacle books can be ahead too, like for the GSL finals, they had the winner a very clear favortie, and gave the loser very high odds, so I actualy bet on the loser because I thought it was a great deal (even if I knew he wasn't the favorite). This time the book was right xD
But there's not a whole lot to bet on appart GSL. With the new format you would need live betting (not really live, but in groupstage (ro32 - ro16) the opponents are decided live so the book has to be very reactive.)

Filled out your survey. While I do all of my esports betting at Pinnacle they don't always offer lines on SC2 Games that I deem to be important or popular so there is certainly a niche out there at the moment for a book dedicated to esports betting. People will be reluctant to sign up to a new book though with so many established books but I'd certainly give it a whirl if the dedication was there.

Hmm couldn't players just bet/let bet a lot of money on their opponents and then lose on purpose? In the current esports scene it seems so likely to me, don't ask me why, it's just a subjective feeling.

Hey, I'm back again. We are now working with Paddy Power (a major UK bookmaker with 2000 shops in Ireland) to offer odds on Starcraft 2. Right now we have odds up on Copenhagen Games which has oGs.MC as evens favourite, White-Ra and naniwa at 3/1, morrow and TheWind at 6/1. If you would like to place a bet or see all of the odds you can do so at http://tinyurl.com/ppstarcraft - I don't want to advertise any related promotions that we have going for people who bet in case it breaks advertising rules but you could PM me if you are interested and would like to know more.
Any feedback would be good too as we would like to do more SC2 events in future. Personally I don't think you can argue against MC at evens!
Good luck!

Put a cheeky £20 on MC Cheers Luke

You shouldn't use tinyurl, most browser/firewall (like mine) block it so people who don't know think the link is broken.
