For any of you able to access the Korean broadcast of GSL, there are some quick video hellos from the three main casters/commentators at VTGaming.net.
Preview: + Show Spoiler + Fans of GomTV’s GSL, especially those who watch the Korean-language stream, should be familiar with Lee Hyun-Joo, Ahn Joon Yeong, and Chae Jung Won (or at least their voices!) Known to non-Korean fans mostly for their enthusiastic, rapid-fire casting and soccer-commentator-esque cheers, the Korean casting team is actually a highly versatile entertainment unit serving GomTV’s Starcraft 2 fans a complete cultural experience.
Lee Hyun-Joo
First up is Lee Hyun Joo, arguably the most recognizable member of the Korean team by virtue of her gender and her propensity for escalating excitement and climactic cheers. Formerly a professional Starcraft 1 gamer herself (Zerg) and an eSports caster since 2001, Lee Hyun-Joo knows her way around the competitive scene. Her role in the coverage trio is lead caster which means that as her two cohorts are receiving a constant stream of game information, she is interpreting their input and explaining the actual progress of the game to listeners. Days can run long, but when the other two gentlemen are swapped out for a fresh set of commentators, indispensable Lee Hyun Joo remains on the podium the entire time. Her knowledge, her beauty, and her passion make her the perfect icon for professional eSports broadcasting.
Chae Jung Won
In addition to commentating for and helping organize GSL, Chae Jung Won is also the co-host of the GomTV production Star2Night, a Starcraft 2 variety show that airs once a week during GSL tournaments to help bring in a broader viewership. He is also heavily involved in accomodating and encouraging foreigner participation in the league and was TorcH’s first point of contact during GSL 1. A fan of Starcraft 2 himself, he’s a Diamond-level Zerg player. And as a fun fact, he’s known as “Parappa” around the office for his love of American rap music!
Ahn Jun Yeong
A friendly face who always greets TorcH and I when he sees us in the studio, Ahn Jun Yeong speaks the best English of the three casters. He is very passionate about the growth of Starcraft 2 outside Korea and looks forward to more and more foreigners participating in GSL.
Tasteless and Artosis work across the room from the Korean casters every night of GSL. When we stopped and asked them a few things about their Korean counterparts, mainly what the differences between the two casts are, they had this to say:
Remember to tune into the GSL Season 3 Final this Saturday at 5pm KST (3am EST Friday night) where you will be able to catch a glimpse of these amazing personalities in action.
There's also a video interview with Tastosis done by Seltzer about their comments of the Korean casting style.
PS. Also check out this thread if you want to go fanboy over Lee Hyun-Joo ;-)

This is fun to watch, thanks torch.
|
Well, Tyson lost to Buster Douglas. Will he land in jail soon?
|
haha thanks on bringing us coverage from Korea, and some of us were wondering where you went :p
|
Saw these earlier. Thanks for the inside coverage Torch! It's really cool to get tidbits and interviews of behind the scenes over in the Korean SC2 pro scene. <3 Lee Hyun-Ju + Show Spoiler +
|
Wow, I'm surprise that the quietest one out of the three, the male Korean commentator is very at good English. And thank you Torch for the interviews
|
well one of the korean commentators is quite good at english lol. Even though he said he isn't good at english :o
The female does not understand any english it seems and had to have a translator helping her out.
The other also decent at english since I was able to understand him.
Artosis LOL I got cheesed by the korean commentator Ahn (was it?) and he almost flamed him :D
Tasteless acting chill as usual :D
Nice videos TorcH.

hyun-ju is so pretty. her english is adorable haha.

Lee Hyun Joo actually understands English very well, but is very shy about speaking it. I myself was surprised at Mr.Ahn's English as he's only ever said "Hi Trevor" to me before and never tried to say anything longer. Mr. Chae is quite good at English as well, but it didn't show in this video of him.
I'm not sure if I can get this started before January, but if anyone has anything they want to see from Korea, let me know and I'll try to capture it in some way. Email or Tweeting at me is the best way to actually get it to me though.
|
Well, at the very least, their English is better than my Korean haha.
|
Thanks for the updates! Hyun Joo is so terribly cute. Ahn and Chae are also great and so sincere. I hope they will add a third and fourth English caster as well so Tastosis can take a break at times, especially during the 9 hour casting marathons. Even if those don't happen anymore, i think it would still be nice to give the guys a break now and then.

Enjoyed the videos of behind the scene and about the people running the GSL.

some footage of the team house would be great~!~

Wow I'm in love. Unfortunately, I'm only in Bronze League, she would never fall for me =(
|
loled at artosis almost flaming his colleague
also thanks for this

Great stuff. Please keep doing these kinds of things, its great to get some of the behind the scenes info, as regards both the foreigners and the Koreans. And yes, they were all three of them very cute. Please tell them to relax, we love them, they can do no wrong! :D
|
The Korean commentators speaking in shy, broken English is totally adorable. ^_^
I see and hear a lot of the Korean commentators, but this is the first real introduction I've had to them. It's great to finally learn a little about them. You guys are doing a great job covering the scene.

Loving all these little scene videos, great job.
Though I get a giggle after every interview seems to end with "any last words?". as though you're going to take them out back and beat them with a shovel next xD
|
Lolol at Dan almost BMing one of the Korean casters on the ladder
|
I want more of these Tasteless interviews ^^ We haven't really heard from him lately. Artosis is much more in touch with us the audience so it's always nice to see his interviews

I dont know if anyone else feels this way, but that woman commentator has got to go. Shes way to loud and annoying even on the English cast i can hear her, lol. Its nice to be excited about star craft and all but your dont need to that loud too lol.
Sorry if your her fanboy, Adun

those vids were so great. "My English sucks" had me laughing They did a good job and you can tell that they are passionate about it.
Thanks for doing and sharing these. ♥

Their English must be better than most foreign players' Korean (even those who reside in Korea).
|
they are really trying to make the GSL a world wide competition uh ....it warms my heart

Thanks for the info Torch! :D

Thanks for the videos/interviews! Keep up the good work.

Tasteless showed us that his korean is pretty bad in the semi finals of GSL 3 + Show Spoiler + when he was trying to speak korean because hungon prime was similar to voidray in korean or something like that.

I think the problem is rather that the GSL live is for Koreans, so their commentary is amplified and booms across the hall. Plus she does a LOT of the talking, so you probably hear her the most. I love her voice, so I want her to stay. Basta :p

it would have been funny is artosis auctally did flame ahn in that ladder match he metioned. I wonder what would have been said at the studio the next day, lol

Call me what you want but I don't ever find broken english adorable.... or any language for that matter. And english isn't even my first language lol.
EDIT: Isn't the girl interviewing Tasteless and Artosis from WCG ultimate gamer season 2?
|
i love these sort of videos, much thanks
|
Thanks for the post. I think if e-sports is going to grow outside of Korea it's important to get to know the Korean side of things.

Hangul (the alphabet used within the Korean language) is very easy to read. You can learn how to read most things within a month, although this is only phonetically and you'll likely have no idea of what you're actually saying .
|
they seem to be very kind persons, i really hope gomtv will get bigger and bigger
|
I'm in love with Lee Hyun-Joo.
|
wow thanks Torch.
Great to hear sth you can acutally understand... somehow
|
haha "jonathan play SOO good" "my english sucks sorry"
haha so cool thanks for the vids man.
|
Very nice. Tell them they speak good English, just need more practice and less shyness.
Thanks for the coverage and good luck in Korea.
|
I think my favorite moment in the interview with the female commentator is when shes like pass pass go pass when someone was trying to sneak in front of the camera :D
|
Torch is bringing the heat man, awesome.

I remember Tasteless saying he could read a small amount of Hangul in an interview somewhere.

Since Code A didn't happen for you, how has that changed your ST deal? Do you know what you need to do to get Code A for the second GSL of 2011?
|
haha not too surprising that she sounds so nervous speaking english
edit: all of them, rather
|
This was great. Great work Trevor and Rachel, we appreciate all the effort you two put into the community! I'm also glad to see how much effort GOM is putting into accommodating the foreigners (both players and viewers). They are doing a great job! They have good english. It makes me smile that they go out of their comfort zone in order to say some warm words to us in English. Gogo GOM and VT!

watching korean commentators speak english is like watching puppies playing together
so quuute

TorcH coming out with some consistently awesome content recently, deeply appreciated by the foreign scene! Keep it up, becoming a big TorcH fan already!
