I've always had a certain affection for putting replays on 8x speed and just watching the minimap and the little squares doing battle. To me, it has a very cellular feel to it, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of watching two colonies do battle; I especially enjoy games with Zerg.

SO! I thought I'd make a little video showcasing the idea and maybe some others will think it's neat, too.

didnt see the 2nd post, but yea, huk vs idra, lol.

I actually really like the concept. If someone where so inclined and talented, as to compose some music for certain replays, then this could be a smashing hit.

I enjoyed this in BW as well. If you held down the TAB-key, you could force the minimap to refresh several times per second, which made the movements really smooth and fluid.

Nice movie!

That was actually really awesome to watch. Nice idea.
Reminds me of when I was watching one of the Flash vs Jaedong finals, was a long epic game, and just looking at the minimap was amazing, so many movements back and forth across the whole map. Was amazing to think it was just two people controlling it all.

That is actually pretty awesome. Who knew watching workers on minimaps could be that interesting. I'll probably start doing it during games.

I've done that more than once x.x

If you like that "rapid movement" type of thing with a bunch of units, you should check out "Conway's Game of Life", a cellular automata based off of a few simple life-or-death rules. You can run simulations and get a really similar, more interesting effect (both scientifically and just "Cooooooool...")

Maybe I'll try some carriers if people subscribe and tell me nice things :3

Of course, you don't need to make a video to watch the minimap. Simple complexity is beautiful.

It was definitely pretty awesome. I found myself doing this a lot when spectating games where too many units were involved for me to watch directly (such as a battle taking place at the center of Xel'naga Caverns, which practically locks my computer).

Do more!

Well, I think you'd have to modify the game files somehow and risk being banned. I'm sure it's possible to refine the quality of the raw video a bit, but you're still looking at big coloured squares so I didn't worry too much about it.

Idra could have done that a few days ago at GSL.. had his opp, pinned in the base had 4/5 bases taken.. he easily could have taken the others seeing as his muta ball had the opp pressed back and then let the siege begin. Shame he didn't, I've been waiting to see someone do it. Fruitdealer could have maybe tried against boxer at Blizzcon too, he had 5/6 hatches vs boxers 2 base.

To be honest, I was intending to put Tubular Bells from Mike Oldfield on there (AKA, the Excorsist theme) but for some reason the audio file wasn't working.

So...I searched "mp3" on my newely reformatted computer and picked the most soothing sample music I could find, which ended up being a song called "Maid with Flaxen Hair".

Ha, I'm glad I'm not the only person to be memorized by the mini map. I will sometimes re-watch a replay at the fastest speed only watching the mini map to see what kind of clues can be gained and used to my advantage for future games.

Watching only the mini map reminds me of a scientists try to figure out what it going on with very limited information, similar to quantum physics, astronomy, biology ETC. I imagine what if aliens came across an archive of millions of SC2 games but the only thing they could see was the mini map. What could they learn about SC2? Could they identify the different units? I'm sure they could easily tell there are 3 races and all the races mine/eat/use the minerals, except that wouldn't know they are called minerals. I think the gas extractors would seem more mysterious but I think they could figure them out as well.

Anyway I could go on and on about the mini map and what could be learned but even if the aliens had millions or mini-map replays I doubt the aliens could ever draw what the units look like. They could probably figure out everything else, attack strength, movement speed, cost, build time ETC but I doubt they could ever draw a Zergling. It makes me wonder if that is the same hurtle we are facing in trying to picture a quark or some other subatomic particle...

This movie is really awesome, some things that stood out for me as I watched;

1. Worker saturation looks really pretty, with all those dots moving very fast between mins and base.

2. The power of the swarm in master macro Idra's hand is very intriguing to watch, seeing almost no units then a dot KERPLOSION right before he heads out.

Very nicely done, loved the music too!

i always do this while forwarding replays.. replays on high speed give so cute minimap movies.. always reminds me a little of game of life, although thats something completely different. xD we had to make some ai in our first year at university which tries to make smilies survive in a grid where randomly food is dropped and there are two opposing factions. That always looked very similar where a bunch of red ones would be surrounded by a bigger bunch of blue ones (just spread out over a larger part of the map than in sc) and slowly eat them up. So i always get a little nostalgic when watching replay minimaps on highspeed.. *dreams*

Thats cool. I don't think it would be good for long games, but that game was just about the right length. The dot wars were pretty cool.

Haha this is cool, you can even tell what is happening simply by looking at the dots. (actuals units and stuff)

That was awesome.

I'm also happy that so many people liked the music. It's a clarinet arrangement of Debussy's "La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin".

That is so cool, I love it !!
I can only imagine what it'd be like with a nydus, like a blue square that pops out of nowhere, and lots of tiny blue squarre come out of it.

Anyway, awesome concept, would love to see more

Extremely entertaining in its simplicity, this concept will be best in really back and forth games (possibly the finals of blizzcon tourney, since they were so prone to army trades), the music was a great addition.
Glad to see that you're doing another!

I watched the vid without knowing what game it was from. It's quite strange but the building placement told me it was a pvz and for whatever reason I imagined that the movement was stalker/sentry vs hydras. I didn't even realize that my visualization of the dots was clearly based on my memory of the huk vs idra game.

Man if someone made a mod so that you could somehow distinguish what buildings were what and maybe even units, watching the minimap all throughout a game would be awesome.

But the beauty is that it's up to your own personal interpretation.

Haha so sexy, you sound like you're on weed pure truth. I love minimap games, there should be an animation with every replay on the replay sites! Someone get coding!

Decided to make one, using an old FFA game. It's fun watching your ball of units devour the other players.
