If you look at his games he wins almost everything due to a combination of good macro and great surrounds/positioning. This is facilitated by using the faster zerg units (speedling, speed baneling, muta and ultra) and the infestor to limit the opponent's mobility. At the end of the day hydras seem more like static defense in the zerg arsenal (handy against VRs, sometimes gateway pushes and banshees) because of how slow they are relative to everything else. Combine this to their being relatively flimsy (unlike thors for example which are slow but tough) and they are a huge liability because they can get caught in the open and annihilated. Cool's play is absolutely amazing (game 1 was a great comeback) and hydras wouldn't have allowed him to keep alive and punish the Terran so hard for pushing at the wrong time. On top of that Hydras can never counterattack in any way so the Terran is free to macro up and can lose an army without getting hurt back home (because by the time the hydras make it there he has another army). As has been noticed on a number of threads the hydra was forced into the game because it is so iconic but in its current incarnation does very little for Z. In my opinion they need some form of research-able utility upgrade (in the concussive shell vein). I don't think just buffing hp or attack will help them, the basic problem is that they are slow and don't fit a harassing/reactive play-style but seem like they would go with slow mech armies a lot better. Anyways, don't want to go off topic here, Cool is great, those wins were beautiful and his use of zerg is the best I have seen.

Even when I practiced, I didnt reveal it in my plays. I figured Terran would learn how to avoid and counter it, so I saved it for an important match. It was tricky to pull off since I didnt get to practice it all that much, but I think it was quite effective today. Oh thank god he was just bluffing about being unable to stop drops. i was entirely shocked at cool when he said that. since using infestors to stop drops is the easiest thing in the world. atta boy cool.

Cool is I think the player who has taken that advice most to heart. His macro is decent, but not mindblowing. His unit micro is very good...but I think I've seen better (e.g. Dimaga). But Cool is better at positioning than any other Zerg I've ever seen. It seems like in every major battle, he manages to get perfect flanking/surrounds...and the difference it makes is monumental. Its notable that he's been more successful with better flanking/surrounds than IdrA has been with his masterful macro. It suggests on some level to me that Zerg isn't as much of a macro-oriented race as everyone has assumed...but rather, its a positioning oriented race. There have been a lot of Cool's matches where a pivotal battle went down, and had it not been for his perfect flanking he'd have lost, and had he lost no amount of macro brilliance would have saved him from being steamrolled by his Terran opponent. But he got the surround, which helpd him win or draw in those pivotal battles, which ultimately allowed him to get the win. I know everyone likes to focus on flashy stuff like the surprise 6-pool, the Baneling carpet bombing, the Fungal Growthed medivacs, etc. But I think those things are secondary to Cool's extraordinary ability to arrange the battlefield in exactly the right way for him to get a flank/surround at the exact moment he needs it. I really hope he wins, because I feel like Cool is helping to demonstrate how potent Zerg can actually be. Yes, they are the most difficult race, just as T and Z were more difficult than P in BW. And they may even be slightly UP. But when played at the highest level, they have the potential to be devastatingly effective, and I think the surface is just being scratched. And while everyone obsesses over build orders, the number of expansions you have, etc. Cool is showing that you don't need some genius build order no one's ever conceived of, you don't need to be a macro god with a 5 base advantage. You can actually just play in such a way that you outposition your opponent, win battles straight up, and that can ultimately be the key to victory. Rock on Cool, you're an inspiration.
