Please don't use MOTD as a good example of analytical play. It's awful. No research. All clichés. Get paid a massive amount of money for Alan Shearer to say, "He'll be dissapointed with that." Of course he will Alan he just conceded a goal.
"ex-footballer and TalkSport pundit Stan Collymore put it at the beginning of the season: "stale, clichéd, smug pap". And little seems to have changed"
"he described the core cast of Shearer, Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson and anchorman Gary Lineker as a "golfing clique with a passing interest in football". It's difficult to disagree – many viewers were left questioning whether Lineker et al, went to South Africa this summer to talk about the World Cup, or to giggle awkwardly between themselves when it became apparent they knew little about teams that weren't England, Brazil or Spain."
Alan Shearer called Lee Dixon a nerd and a teachers pet for knowing a Slovakian midfielder, that midfielder? Marek Hamsik one of the finest central midfielders in the world.
Fucking retarded.
The problem is these shows breed ignorance because they never bothered researching when they first started and they got views regardless, so why should they research now? It's not going to up the viewers so why bother?

I find it silly how many people are crying about "No strategy questions please". Do you think anyone below grand masters has anything important to bring up in that department? Something tens of thousands of people should hear about? Of course not. That's what the TL strategy forum is for, that's what certain sub-reddits are for, heck that's even what Inside the Game is for, Day9 Dailies are for. There are SO many places for you to ask your low level questions, where people really want to help you with the basics of the game.
If there is something new like maps or patch changes, they discuss that at length. But State of the Game does not need people asking about how to hold 2base allins or what expansions to take on a certain map. I don't mind high level strategy but chances are almost all random fan callers will have nothing valuable to offer in that department... Even Lobber's questions were not really something that appeals to the general audience ("Herp, how do you guys feel about the fact that i'm not in grand maste- err i mean that the GM ladder is still broken. PS, how can i raise my APM above 40").

Stan Collymore might be right about MOTD but Stan Collymore is the biggest idiot and moron in the footballing world. That idiot should stick to dogging and stay the hell away from football punditry.

I find him alright these days but that might be because they pair him with eternal wanker Alan Green so I like him for not being Alan Green.
Gary Neville and Souness are probably the only truly good one's these days.

thanks for the fast upload jp, i love you
overall, pretty good episode but especially the ipl 4 segment was kinda meh, because of the lack of knowledge about the maps - especially seeing how a map like sanshorn has been in esv weekly for ages and is a sick map. however i really liked the discussion about less maps in tournaments. i hope we will see smaller map pools in the future, not less maps
|
And you can add to that the fact that Sanshorn is used n the RO32 in ESL Go4SC2, 2 times a week and in RO32 , Playhem Dailys, twice a day.
Summa summarum 16*16= 256 games per WEEK on this map with masters and grandmasters players.
Atlantis Spaceship is only in the mappool of Playhem so it wont be played often, thats granted but its also a IPL map put into there for the purpose so the players can test it out which can be done RO8 forward.
- Now seeing that some of the panelists were not familiar with the maps gets to show how much in their own bubble of SC2 they live in (I'd call it the GSL/MLG bubbleworld). I will express my sincere hope that this is not the case for the PRO players, teams and their management who have to do their homework on new maps because you will see them in mappools for 2012.

Yeah there is aloooot of games from good players on these maps every week but even if they knew this they would still shit on it. You heard what Artosis and JP said, after they were laughing at the guys who said they have been played/tested by pro players in chat they said "But have them been played in GSL Code S? I think not!!!!" or something like that. That kind of attidude is so fucking bad.

People don't have endless hours a week to watch Sc2.
So obviously they are going to watch GSL, MLG and IPL content as it features the best players.

ESV Weekly features better players than IPL and MLG as a whole. There might be a few star players at those tournaments who don't play the ESV Weekly, but the average skill level is much higher in the Weekly.

Bad timing starting to ask for handouts this season, worst show in a long time followed by telling the viewers there will not be a show next week.

I still enjoy MOTD. I know what you're saying about Lineker and co, i think they all get paid far too much and there are occasions when it feels like you're peeking through a window at a circle jirk. Of course none of them live up to motty's standards even when they are analysing the game but none of this invalidates my previous points about SoTG. Oh and P.S don't bring that rat faced bastard Gary Neville into this things can only go south.

Ya this "NOT CURRENTLY IN CODE S!" is a pretty detrimental attitude towards progress.

They should have said, map played by players in team house practicing mainly for those ?
For such a high caliber tournament, as JP said it's a cool risk from IPL to take. And it's just the online qualifiers.
But if they made it to the main round of the tournament and because it's only play on euro weekly where players are not on team house practicing against or to find all the potential cheese and exploit you can do, and one is discovered in the tournament, it will suck, hard and mainly for IPL. That's what they meant.
Since IPL is a main tourney, players will prepare for these maps with that mindset, and might find such an exploit, do you really want the shole tourney ruined because of that ? I don't.
JP's point was that the map pool was suprising and he wanted the opinion of the hosts, they then debatted for 30 minutes about the size of map pools, and concluded in a few minutes (2-3) about IPL choice. They almost did not talk about the maps, this part is where your critics should go, not towards their attitude as all of them are well versed in terms of maps breaking down tournaments...
That aside, i like the three maps and i look forward for the matches.

I'd love if they could just talk about every matchup for 10 minutes. Recent metagem shifts, new strategies, possible imbalances, etc..
Just dedicate 10 minutes to TvZ, 10 minutes to TvP and 10 minutes to PvZ and then 5 minutes per mirror match. Yes I do realize that this would be 45 minutes of stategy talk, but then just cut the call-ins and do strategy talk instead. Last episode (last week) you guys were talking about PvP for 30-40 minutes and yes it was boring for most of us,simply because it was only interesting for protoss players, for zergs and terrans it was absolutely boring and there was no point in listening to that. But when you talk about all the matchups, then it's much more interesting for everybody, maybe there's a protoss that has a bad PvZ and wants to hear what you guys think about the matchup and the strategies used by both sides, or a terran who has problems with tvp, or a zerg who has problems with zvt. I would love if you could talk about strategies, I mean for god's sake you guys have day9 and artosis on the same show, together with incontrol and tyler... why not let them talk about strategies, day9 and artosis are top level commentators and you have both of them on the same show, but you guys rather talk about drama and things that everyone of us can read on reddit anyway.
There's nothing informative about SOTG, all the information we get from the show is already on reddit, the only way I'll keep watching the show is if you guys start to discuss the actual game, because that is something I can't read on reddit. I can't go to reddit and read day9's opinion on PvZ or what Artosis thinks about the metagame in TvP. That is something that would give people an actual reason to watch the show.

GSL has only had code S until last night; there's more than enough time to watch other tournaments. MLG hasn't had anything for months, so obviously that doesn't interfere. IPL stuff includes these maps, so if anything it's more clear that they AREN'T watching it at all.
And finally, as StarVe said above, the ESV weekly provides consistently awesome Korean players. Last week there were 12 code S and 21 code A participants.
I'm curious. Artosis said he watches probably more SC2 than anybody. What exactly is he watching all this time? Is it just ladder streams?
