I'm sure some people know of this, but I figured I'd point it out for those who don't.
When your in an intense game, and you want to send 3 workers to gas, you usually don't have the time to find only workers that don't have minerals. So sometimes you will send some workers who might have mined a mineral and those minerals will go to waste.
What I figured out was that, if you order a worker to go to the geyser and then press "C" (return cargo), it will return the minerals and then proceed to the previous action you gave it. So that means if you take 3 workers and send them to gas, and then press "C", any workers with minerals will return them first and then go to collect gas.
*UPDATE* In case people haven't realized this as well (forgot to update this when I realized you could use this trick for transferring workers as well):
This is also very useful for maynard workers.
Right click on mineral patch at expansion Press "C" The workers will return the minerals to the nearest Nexus/CC/Hatch and proceed to the expansion

More posts like this please!
God damn I wish I had known this months ago.

lol always nice to know thanks for post

Thanks, I didn't know this.

Very nice find, I always waste time waiting for no mineral scvs and sometimes end up selecting too many.
|
great find, thank you
actually i noticed this today aswell by accident, but i didnt realize the useage :D

or you do just shiftclick hatch+shiftclick geysir

This technique is more efficient as only the workers with minerals in hand will return to drop off, the workers without minerals will just continue straight to the geyser.

Thank you very much for this! I have been obsessing about this for months, haha!

If you shift click the hatch, then the geyser every drone/probe/SCV will goto the hatch first. Wasting time, if they are not carrying anything.
I do believe this method is the most efficient.

C->shift->geysir would probably be the most optimal. Though I'm not sure how much difference 5-10 minerals or 0.5 seconds will make in your game

Sometimes it's a lot more than just .5 seconds wasted. Every little trick counts

Thx for the tip. I didn't know this

After watching some of Day9's Dailies where he is using the QXC build-order-tester, I was amazed by how accurately he could pull 3 guys without minerals with a single box-select. I've since then mastered it with only about 10% error great skill to have!
I think I'll probably start using this strat in addition to it though, because I do occasionally pull a worker that's carrying minerals.

I was debating whether to post this it's handy. Better than shift clicking.
You can also use shift-c to return a worker to the mineral line after building something, but obviously only if it is holding minerals.
|
Well it does save you that extra few minerals. Maybe more for the hardcore group but still a good tip thanks x)

:0 Thanks for the tip! I'm assuming this works for my drones when i want to make a building after selecting a few random drones and it ALWAYS is one with a mineral patch to return
