Most of us have wierd little APM guilty pleasures where we like to spam to keep our APM up and keep our mouse control up throughout the course of a game... what is your favorite method...

if you spam anything past early game intentionally just to keep your apm up, you're gimping yourself.
trust me it wont matter how much apm shows up in the replay when you lose due to lack of proper multitask or control, cause you're busy cycling through hotkeys without a clue.

I don't mean to be rude, but I think spamming is bizzare.

So you're watching somebodies steam, the game is loading and he's talking about the map, then he gets into the game and spams like so crazy stops talking, putting all his concentration into spamming. (I'm talking about the boxing workers spam)

But yeah, I do this:

1234 hotkey spam. right click x10000000 to move a unit 2 inches on the screen

I feel like it gets my middle finger on my right hand and my hotkey fingers warmed up.

Due to the original response lag when the beta first came out, I started with the habit of spamming right clicks to move units, for some reason I felt like it moved them faster. That and I do the box select at the start with workers. Box select, press hotkey for Nexus/CC/Hatch, box select, press hotkey, and repeat. For no reason at all.

In WC3 I spam 467 to switch between rax/main/altar, and I do the same in SC2 (and Brood War) spamming 236 for depot(yes I hotkey my depot)/scout scv/main :D

I personally find that early APM spamming helps me move faster later on in the game. If i'm crusing at say 200 APM in the first few minutes, I usually can maintain 100+ in the part of the game where things start to matter.

If i'm only spamming at 50 APM in the first few minutes, I find that my APM later in the game is not as substantial as it needs to be. Perhaps 80-99ish.

I'm a zerg player so my early useless spam basically involves cycling through hotkeyed hatch, scouting drone, scouting overlord. 1/2/6 respectively.

I have like crazy bass player fingers, so for some reason I can alternate my pointer and middle finger insanely fast, I get up to 600 apm fairly easily by doing this on the right mouse button, funny stuff, I would never do it past the first minute or so, its just a hindrance at that point.

at the start of the game 1-5-drag select workers-1-5-drag select workers.....
i also sometimes individually select every mineral patch in between spamming.

during the game if i have nothing in particular to do i usually 1-2-3/1-2/3 etc or 4-5-6-7-8-9-0 selecting buildings to see which are close to finishing a cycle etc etc.

Actually that's a nice thing, i'll copy this since i do need to improve my mouse precision. Doing this feels much better than mineral swapping since you have to hit units that moves

This is the only spam I do, and this happens only in the beginning of the game, where I don't have 2 hatches up. Once that 2nd one is up, i'll be occupied enough to keep my apm up...

There is no point for constant spam in mid-late game...however, spamming does somehow manage to somewhat warm you up a little.....just a little.

I thought this thread was going to be about how you use your 3x APM to abuse noobs by microing and macroing better than them at the same time. Afterwards feel good about yourself because of your carry-over BW skills

I just spam between 1,2,3,4,5. It's disorientating, but it works. But really, all that matters is winning. Just cause you have 200-300 apm doesn't mean you're pro level.

I find spamming a lot gets me in the habit of playing more quickly. Forcing yourself to play faster will make you a worse player while you're doing it, but you may find it helps you speed up your normal game once you stop doing it.

When I was getting into BW I had around 120 apm. I spent a week where I forced myself to play at 200 apm through the whole game. Obviously this resulted in a lot of spam, and I played terribly for that week. But afterwards, when I let myself go back to normal, I found I was averaging at 150-160 apm naturally, without spamming. Pretty big increase for one week of practice.

Wouldn't it be more prestigious to be able to win matches with as low APM as possible? I personally would be more impressed by a person with 20 APM beating a recognized good player as opposed if someone with with 200 APM would do the same.

1-2 units (2 scout)
3,4,5 hatches.

as i spam through my hatches i always check available drones and the inject larvae and tech bars and reposition rally points... so that hardly feels like wasted apm. double tap 2 to check my scouting ovie and repeat!

i like to try to box each of my drones individually as fast as I can in the beginning of the game. It's not so much for raising my APM, but it just keeps me entertained and I feel like such a boss if I do it well.

2 scouting drone
4 hatch

And I try to bend my fingers to stretch them a little while spamming buttons 1,2+4. And I also like to click on the minerals as fast as I can to practice a little on my accuracy.

no...it's just a preference.

You should already know, APM does not equal skill

I mineral micor, which does take most of my apm. After that I just box select and spam "return cargo". Also when I build workers, I don't just spam the hotkey, I also spam with the mouse button on the icon to get it started as soon as humanly possible :p

Zerg player.

Click hatch, press S D, select workers sent to one patch. Send overlord away hotkey to 1 and 0. Select hatchery hotkey it to 4 and 5 and set rally points. Spam for drones and give each egg a seperate rally point. When you get 9 supply send the 9th drone to scout, hotkey as 3. Make ovie and rally it somewhere ( you can rally eggs and even hotkey them before they hatch ) and hotkey it as 0 ( 0 is my overlord hotkey ). 345 spam and double tapping 3 or 5 to switch views from scouting drone to hatchery. Keeping a close look on the minimap and minerals/supply.

Yes, I do spam. It keeps my thinking caps on and makes me play faster. Whereas without spamming in the early game I notably get worse at making quick decisions.

When I play protoss or terran I get bored in the early game because there isn't enough to do >.> . Just send your scv/probe to mine and hotkey command center/nexus.

I enjoy spamming e as a protoss player with my Nexus selected and hearing "not enough minerals." It serves a purpose in the early game so that my probes start building as soon as possible.

When Beta was still up I tried spamming hard to see how high APM goes. With Faster it went somewhere between 1300-1500, with the slowest speed 3200. I used eight fingers.

It's funny to see some replays where an opponent has 300 APM in the beginning and ends with 50

i don't spam much later in the game except for right-clicks

usually as a toss player, I like moving my army around always. In SC:BW, it used to be "3a4a5a6a to this side of the map then 3a4a5a6a back to the other side" but since there are now infinite control groups, it just became "3a to this side of the map, then 3a back" =(

so now i just do whatever i can to keep my apm up =\

Theres a reason the Koreans spam keys there not doing it for their APM. Good players do tons of early apm as a warm up and to keep the intensity going and to transition into the end game. Its actully quite horrendus to watch some of my friends play in the early game. Theyll build a worker, look at a txt message and keep drinking their beer. Then at a random time they decide oh hey its time to get micro goin and they just never can matcht he same precision, control, and agility that I have. Which is funny at the same time because they make fun of me for my early game spamming. But then you compare leagues and win rates and yea you get the picture.

I'll box select my workers in the beginning of the game. The nice thing about it is that it has a challenge: if you do it fast enough the SCVs will start saying their 'funny' lines.

I used to not be able to do it all the time, but by the end of the beta I could always get 3 - 4 funny quotes in. Clearly my skill is improving :D

I agree with you there, but I think 20 APM would be too low to keep up on everything. I would love to watch a replay where a good player with really high APM just gets beat by someone with a really low APM. I know when beta went down my APM at the end of most games was right around 30, as a gold level player. I didn't spam anything at all. I think now, after working with the BO Testers, and AI's, my APM is probably around 40. I think it's possible to do everything needed in the game with an APM of about 60 without any spamming.

My take on APM is similar to how Day[9] described it.. that APM, at least at low levels is how much stuff you are remembering to do.

Build Wokers
Chrono/Spawn Larvae/Mule/Scan
Build Units
Build Buildings
Scout
Micro units

I think you can keep up on all those things with about 60 APM. Not saying there is anything wrong with a little spamming to get your fingers warmed up, or to get psyched up for the match. But I think it would be really cool to just see someone with a very efficient APM, who can keep up on everything without mega spam APM.
yup, I'm a nub.

It also improves focus alot next to the APM part. It's easier starting high and ennding high then to start low and end high.

I always spam the hotkey for my cc and after that play around with my scv's like boxing around them etc.

In sc1 My spam was click on each mineral in a series extremely fast. The feedback sound you got from clicking on things in sc1 was good, cause you'll know you clicked on it, even if you weren't looking there, or at the screen, or are a blind player. SC2 is missing that, and hope that stuff is added on retail.

This. I have my CC hotkeyed as 1, then I go up and down my mineral line clicking an SCV, 1, next SCV, 1, next SCV, 1, etc and repeat. Helps warm up APM plus it's just practice for my accuracy. It's harder than you might think to not misclick when you do it really fast.

I click more than 1000000000000000000 times when i move a unit , but really i think its more important to keep up your macro. I spam just so I can stay ahead of myself..sometime i just sit and stare at my workers...5 seconds later realizing that should be upgrading. So spamming actually helps me focus o3o

Box selecting all the probes, then moving the mouse on the Nexus(still with the probes targeted) , 3-5 clicks on the Nexus and then all this over and over again... This doesn't give me super-duper APM , but i can feel the control of my mouse and micro.

I left click my nexus, right click on a mineral, and repeat for each mineral there is in my initial base. Not only does it keep my fingers ready but it improves my mouse accuracy

it really does help warm up your hands. if you feel your hands slowing you down toward the mid-game/end-game 3-5 base 160+ food supply army then you probably didn't spam enough at the start lol.

i guess im pro, cus i never ever ever ever ever spam to raise apm, i guess after playing this game for five years (BW in this case just noticed the forum section) that you just stop caring about apm, and you are just naturally fast. Anyone wanting to see my play pm me, i hate playing sc now days, but if i must ill try my best to squeeze a game out.

I hotkey as follows initially:

1. Main army
2. Production Buildings
3. Secondary Army
4. Primary Buildings (nexus/cc/hatch) and all upgrade buildings
5. More army
6. More army
7-0. - Observers

So I usually hotkey a probe to 1 at the start and nexus on 4 and spam 1,4,1,4 until I get my other buildings up. Since I played a lot of WC3 another method I use to pad APM to keep myself busy at the start of the game is to simply spam right-click to set rally points, as in WC3 spamming hero altar rally point was a common APM padding tactic. I guess old habits die hard.

Personally I only do this because while my buildings get up aside from probe scouting there isn't anything for P to be doing, so I'm essentially bored. Of course doing this on a regular basis does help you get your hands used to moving at that speed, meaning that when it comes to actually needing micro you can respond quickly and more easily. Also I type about 100 word per minute so my hands were already fast to begin with before I started playing any RTS (with the exception of BW - that game taught me how to type ).

Edit: Note as the game goes longer I'll probably end up dumping all my building into a single hotkey to have more room for army hot keys. (I basically like to hot key by unit role, (i.e. all casters on one hotkey, all melee on another, all anti-armor on another, and so on)) I'm not entirely sure why I have a predisposition for organizing my army like this but it seems to work for me, besides I quite often simply click on single units and control them individually.

trust me it wont matter how much apm shows up in the replay when you lose due to lack of proper multitask or control, cause you're busy cycling through hotkeys without a clue.

I agree with this.. I had a friend who I played HON with that when he found out about APM he started spamming right click and other functions to get it up. What I noticed is that the more important aspects of his game like last hitting, calling 'missing', map awareness went down.

I select all probes to different controls and spam 1,2,3,4,5. Also at early game when moving spam right clicking million times.
But I actually think spamming can be pretty useful. It warms your fingers and sets your mind for the game. Also as Day9 had noted, spamming your controls with gates/robos/stargates quickly gives you idea when a building is idle.

Well there's spamming to keep your APM up and warm up your hands, and then there's quickly cycling through production hotkeys to see what's being build or researched. I wouldn't really call the latter spam.

imo this is a dumb thing to do ... I think many ppl do it only to bolster their ego, I constantly beat 200 Apm ppl with my avg 50 apm, spiking at 170 at battles, i view the replay and see them make bad decisions and spamming clicks jumping the screen like crazy etc ....
LE maybe its a star-craft 1 thing, I never played that game ... im coming from the command and conquer series

I make it a habit to switch through hotkeys and and selecting units with my mouse to get into a rhythm. I basically picture it as a big circle when playing and i have to run around the circle doing things. so i start my circle in the beginning and expand it as needed(when more things need to get done)

Just tried it. Although it is a good idea...I tend to lose track of my mineral count b/c I'm trying to click on each individual drone...-_-'. I'll stick to random worker boxes...

When I spam APM I try to make it mimic some action I will actually be performing later in the game, so I just like siwtch from going to my overlord to my hatchery and pretending im gonna inject or scout or blah blah, basically I try to switch my viewpoints a lot so I get used to macroing. I find it more helpful than say, mass right clicking my rally point around -- unless it's to practice accuracy (right clicking only mineral patches as fast as possible).

But I mean, everyone has their tricks, preferences, etc. I do believe though that some sort of fast clicking in the early game makes transitioning into fast midgame macro more easily than going from 5 apm to the triple digits instantly.

I spam 1234 a lot and I think it's because of Counterstrike, haha. I right click spam a lot to move units as well, and I click/drag boxes off to the side where no units are a lot as well.

Speaking of making boxes, I've always made them starting at top right and going down to bottom left. I know that a ton of people go top left to bottom right, but I could have sworn at one point that I heard someone mention that going top right to bottom left is more efficient for clicking on the minimap after grouping units, and it made complete sense to me so I started doing it, and now I just always do it that way out of habit. Does anyone else go top right to bottom left instead of top left to bottom right?

Non spamming player with control rated at 120 APM > a spamming player who even only seldom loses control at an APM of 240+ (mainly due to apm spamming)

my APM is about 160 midgame with only random spamming early game up until theres actually something to do.

I spam my hatch, scout OL and drones at the start of the game occasionally. I find it does help me keep focused a bit. After about 20 supply or so I stop "padding" my apm altogether.

Try moving the mouse cursor around and selecting minerals and workers individually. This should help increase mouse accuracy.

I'm going to sound lazy but I don't do it. I find that if I try and keep my APM up I'll exhaust myself, and not be able to throw down chain games.

I don't know why but SC2 is just exhausting when I play it... it feels like I'm going to have a heart attack sometimes from the pressure (no I'm not fat or in danger of dying)

To warm up my keyboard hand I hotkey each worker early on (while trying to double up on close mineral patches) and I try to hit above 1200 apm with spamming 1-6 as fast as I can, I only do it for the first 10-15 seconds to get my hand warmed up.

Besides worker boxing early game, I have a habit of going through sets of actions twice (like 1a2a3a1a2a3a). BW used to be not as responsive :/
