Very well written sir.
I already find myself getting bored. SC2 is a fun game to play in itself but it feels so disconnected and anti-social. When I played games like counter-strike I could get by without things like chat channels because even in pub servers you'd be playing with 10+ people (often around 30) at a time that you could talk to, so it was almost like a chat room anyways, and you'd find servers you liked and favorite them so that you'd continue talking to the other people that played on that servers. Then if you were in a team the 5 of your would be talking to each other while playing/practicing/etc so it was always a social experience. Chat rooms are what made BW that kind of social experience. Without them it's like you're the stereotypical computer nerd sitting in front of a screen moving around little space men by yourself not talking to anyone.
Often when I stream I say out loud "It's like Blizzard just doesn't even care," and while I'm usually exaggerating when I make these kinds of negative comments about Blizzard, it really does seem like they do not care in the slightest what we think when they come out with these insulting, condescending interviews where they say things like "Do you really want chat channels?" after almost every one of us has been complaining and saying that YES we want them for ages now. I honestly have lost all hope that the current Blizzard SC2 staff cares in the slightest about what we think or want for sc2.

Nope. No plans for specific chat rooms at this time. You'll be able to open up chats direct with your friends, and when we add clans and groups there'll be chats for your clans and groups, but no specific plans for chat rooms right now. Do you really want chat rooms?
That part made me :r
wait ... so we will be able to create groups? any more info on that one? because this could effectively replace chat channels and if we could join groups without the permission of group owners it would be just like any other clan chat channel.
if we then can add people to our friendslist from such groupchats ... i have to say i am partly satisifed. at least satisfied enough to buy the game at release.
any source on groups and groupchats on bnet 2.0?

chatrooms are one of the reason that this game developed such a great community and one reason why it lasted so long. i will seriously be pissed off if theres no channels and think there should be some petition signed to get chats.

It is indeed pretty freaking ronery in the battle.net 0.2

I agree with you the first time i log on B.net 2.0 i think there would be chat room and when i found out there isn't any i felt pretty alone. But the first time i've played WC3 i loged on a random chat and talked to random people and that is how i met people. I think Blizzard is making a mistake because when none of my IRL friends are connected and i know that i can't "meet" people it just make me leave the game.

I'd say the best thing about WoW was(is) the ability to go into a LFG channel talk to some people and get something going. How on earth do they expect SC2 to be anything like the community previous Blizzard titles were and are when they remove the single thing that made the previous games so good - the ability to jump into a game with random people within only a few minutes of chat. 'Facebook integration' is useless for people who do not have friends who play SC2, and also even if there was a TL.net group on Facebook or something like that whereby you could talk to people in game that still isn't better than standard chat channels.

lol @ the youtube video for Bnet 0.2
Is that from South Park? or Team America World Police?

Shame on Blizzard! They have taken it TOO FAR this time. No chat rooms? That means no more bots barking at me. And no more community members to hurl racial and sexual epithets from their anonymous usernames. I want my freedom of speech, and I want it on battle.net

What Blizzard is doing is that they make up a way they want their user to use the program, but they don't leave the user any room. They should seriously read up on end user development.
From their perspective, the user can chat with his friends, meet new people in the games he plays, or from communities like TL, and everything is fine. But what they don't account for is the uses chat channels can have. From running a tournament or a clan to discussing a strategy with random people or playing trivia games, the user can do so much more with a simple chat channel system than with the current system, which is basically the main reason we want them.
Another good example for that is game names. They were scrapped because Blizzard doesn't see a use for them (an alternative hypothesis would be that they want to get rid of all human contact inside of Starcraft 2, because they don't see a point in social interaction). But besides the map that is being played, the game name can describe so much more. Simplest example would be "1v1 gold terran only", indicating the skill level of the game creator and the race he wants to practice against. Other examples are the map settings for maps like DotA, which show a creative use of the game name, that Blizzard probably didn't foresee when creating the custom game system.
My point is: Don't force the users into a way you think they should use your program. Leave them options and see what the community does with it.

Is maybe that the reason they don't want chat? Are they so afraid of someone writing "NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER" in the chat, that they would deny the entire community an essential feature?

Yes but its so bad it feels like you're paying.

I have to give you right in almost every point except for one (dunno if it has been said yet). You said something like Blizzard didn't do anything for the community in 10 years. Well as far as I know they produced patches until about 1 year ago. That's pretty unique in this business.

Meh, I guess you're right.

Yeah, I must admit it's pretty impressive of Blizzard to make Battle.net 2.0 feel more desolate than even most single-player games. Didn't think that was actually possible.
