This is a bad habit and you should try to get in the habit of being light on your hand. Think of playing piano for example. A pianist doesn't say "I will always use my thumb to play the middle C", instead he uses whatever finger that is closest and won't mess up notes before and after it.
actually never thought of it that way, interesting.

Why is it important to keep all you nexus and buildings together? Because you can do this:
1 + Tab (select all warp gates) Z + Shift + Left click spam warp in zealots until you run out of resources or warp gates Tab (nexus group is is the first default section) C (chrono boost from any nexus with energy) Shift + Left click spam all the warpgates in the bottom HUD (you've now chrono boosted all warp gates, warp in cool down is cut in half, or your macro rate is doubled)
So that is: 1, Tab, Z, (shift left click spam warp in), Tab, C, (shift left click spam chrono boost)
By keeping all nexus in your building selections, you both have nexus selections and building selections in the same HUD, allowing you to press C and shift left click spam chrono boost without switching HUDs.
You could just use the W key to access all Warp Gates automatically. However it is a good idea to devote one hotkey for all of your buildings, so that you can c-boost the portraits.
edit - My hotkey preference at the moment (although subject to change) is:
1-4 units - 4 being the special unit group, eg. casters, obs, warp-prism etc. (but not all at the same time) 5 Nexus 6 Gateways until warpgates, then it's used for all my buildings after I have Warp Gates and have expo'd 7-8 Robos & Stargates 9-0 Reserved for temporary use, eg. hotkeying a tech building that I can start an important upgrade from, or lone observers that I need to keep a close eye on.

I recommend getting really good with Tab, you can put ALL your prodcution buildings on 3 (as Im trying now) and cycle through them with tab so you're [3][Tab][A][A][Tab][S][S][Tab][X][Tab][V][V]
or something like that, to cycle through all your buildings. Blizzard OBVIOUSLY made a very rediculous effort to have all the hotkeys on the left side of the keyboard. E for probes? V for overlord? Ya. So, Im working on having my macro buildings all on 3.
then you just work with tab.
right now my setup is:
1-scout/harass units 2-main army 3-production facilites 4-first CC 5,6,7.... expanding CC
Almost play it like oldschool Zerg in terms of Expos. I really recommed getting familiar with tab, because microing your main army with tab also helps Stim (tab) siege (tab) drop (tab) thor cannons (tab)
its actually really really nice.

1 scout 2 all command centers 3,4,5 army 6 barracks with reactor 7barracks with tech lab 8/9 fact / starport maybe 0 scouting building

oh damn, I didn't even think of that, that would make Larva injection so much easier!

Yeah, I keep my left hand on home row and use whichever finger feels most comfortable to hit the hotkeys. Having the majority of your fingers hovering around the number keys would feel weird.
Anyways...
zerg:
1-3 units 4 hatcheries I want to produce attacking units from 5 queens + their respective hatcheries (easy spawn larvae) 6 nydus 0 evolution chamber(s) the rest I assign to whatever buildings I'm using for upgrades
terran:
1-4 units 5 ccs 6 barracks 7 facts 8 starport 9-0 upgrade buildings
protoss:
1-4 units 5 nexus 6 gateways (I switch to using 'w' once warpgate is finished, then change this to robotics) 7 robotics (or starport once warpgates are up) 8 starport 9-0 upgrades
|
1-3 units(3 is always my scouting Probe at the start though) 4 Gateways(until they are changed to Warp Gates) 5 Main Nexus 6 Natural expand's Nexus, and next expands'. 7 Robotics Facilities 8 Stargates
|
1-4 Units 5 Barracks/Fact/Starports (tab through them to macro) 6 CCs 7-0 Ebays/Armories/Tech Labs
Use backspace to jump to your different CCs if needed so you dont have to hotkey all of them.

1 - Melee Units 2 - Ranged Units A 3 - Ranged Units B/Air Units 4 - Production Buildings (Use Tab to cycle) 5 - Nexus'/CC's 6 - Uprades 7 - Scout
One thing I have trouble with is Warp Gates. Is there an quick way to warp in units without having to move the cam back to base?

I've always been interested as to why everyone seems to use the 1 key for their units.
Typing 1a is comparitively really inefficient versus 2a, 3a and 4a, presuming you're using your little finger for the 'a' key then it's a pretty awkward stretch for the ring finger to get across to the 1 and then the little finger to the a. 1 is also pretty bad for command centre/hatchery as the 1s manouvre isn't particularly efficient either. Personally I have been using 2, 3 and 4 for my units. 5 for CC, 6 and 7 for production buildings depending on which build (usually barracks/starport) and then I use 1 for techlabs/ebay/armory.

Am I the only one that likes each nexus separately? I am doing this so that I can chrono all the time. How else can it be done?
I kinda have the same with slightly differences:
1 all units / 1st scout 2-4 units (seperated as needed) 5 all nexus (for chrono) 6 expo / main nexus 7 expo nexus 8 late game scout / stargates
|
1-3 units 4 hatcheries 5 queens
Easy to spam units and spawn larva on the minimap, both 1 hotkey. F keys on main and expo if I need to change individual drone waypoints or if I need to defend.
2 first overlords are 8 and 9, first drone scouts is 0. Should probably start placing that one on 3...
Am thinking of using 5 hatch and 6 queens to open up the first 4 for units.
|
1-4 units 5 all hatcheries 6-9 individual hatcheries and their queens (stupid blizzard taking away my wire frame spawn larvae) 0 upgrades
|
1-4 units 5-8 nexus (5 stargate) (7 observer) on early game 1=probe scout
|
1 units 2 units 3 units 4 queen (when i only have one)/ units 5 all my hatches
