i did my first replay commentary of Azz vs IdrA and wanted to know what people think as well as answer some general obs'ing questions for SC2:
What do you want to see as a viewer from the obs-tool bar? does anyone know a way to hide the replay progress bar yet? is it worth trying to zoom in on a battle, or do you think its better zoomed out? should i just keep switching between FP views (mostly) or control the camera myself? speed to watch the replay at? what type of info do you care to hear about at this point in the beta?

Nice :D watching the rep now
Alright watched the rep. Some general comments:
Stop being so over zealous about everything. It seems any new feature of sc2 is like omfg this is amazing. You were kinda like "OMFG!! HOLY SHIT!!! THE STALKER IS WALKING ON CLIFFS ITS USING ITS ABILITY HOW STRATEGIC!!!". Just gets annoying a bit. Obviously enthusiasm is great but don't let your heart rate triple at every unit ability. Otherwise pretty good commentary considering how little is know about the game
As for whether you should show FP View or just handle the camera yourself, I would handle the camera yourself (like you do in SC1 replays). Do the korean proleague technique where they switch to FP view when there's something interesting to bee seen from first person (Best example would be player A proxies building in player Bs base, and you switch to play B to see if he is able to see the proxy, or if he's frantically looking around the map.
That's my 2 cents, hope it helps.
What made you decide to leave SC1 casting btw?
|
Anything you feel like. None as of now. Zoom in a bit during clashes. I do this sometimes and the effect is great. Make sure you rotate the camera effectively too. Switch to FP view when nothing much is happening. Control the camera during clashes. Watch at Fast speed. Fastest is just too much. I don't know about the last question XD
|
Definitely watch at Faster--Fast is slower than the speed the game is played at, while Faster is equivalent

Don't do that! Refer to Vaul's DoW2 commentaries for reference of how messy that makes things look. You can barely even percieve where the battle takes place. It's just a mess. StarCraft camera is top-down for a reason. Please let 10 year experience with observer cleanliness trickle over unto SC2.
|
Roooofl can't believe that dumb idea to send his collosus actually worked. idra needs to know that you don't need to click minerals/geyser to run away either. just run away they don't get all stuck anymore.
What do you want to see as a viewer from the obs-tool bar? APM. btw the non income resource thing just shows what their current bank of resources is. (unspent money)
does anyone know a way to hide the replay progress bar yet? use a watermark?
is it worth trying to zoom in on a battle, or do you think its better zoomed out? eh, maybe for specific things like worker harass on building scv where he dances behind and you need insert/delete to rotate, etc. like 1% of the time i'd say go for it.
should i just keep switching between FP views (mostly) or control the camera myself? FP view is not that great because it's not perfect FP (no cursor etc). Doesn't matter tbh, do what you feel like. btw, V is a hotkey to switch to other person's view.
speed to watch the replay at? faster plz
what type of info do you care to hear about at this point in the beta? doesn't matter. talk about maps imo.
|
I HOPE IDRA wins watching now~!

Nice commentary, keep it up!
btw lol at Idra, how typical haha
|
lol at Idra.. seems to be always the same guy, even in sc2.
So sad.
|
fun watch and a pretty good game.. you could definitely watch at the speed people play at.

if you guys want classic idra nerdrage, download Fayth vs Idra. Imo the #1 best replay from SC2 so far, watching him get pissed.

sc2 was able to breath some life back into me
and thanks for the feedback so far, everyone

Wait I thought Idra and Artosis are in Korea, how come they play the American ladder?

Depending on the stage of the game, different things from the obs-toolbar are interesting. When the players are macroing up, investing on their economy, it's useful toi have the income bar visible. When the view is outside of the player's bases, following a group of units for example, the production bar is interesting to keep track of what's going on in the base. During a massive battle the APM bar would be nice, since the players will be microing like crazy, and so on. When nothing really interesting is going on it's a good idea to change which bar is visible once in a while instead of keeping only one there. Even if there is nothing to say about them, it gives more information to the viewers.
Update: I forgot to say welcome back Rise! Sc2 is a lot of fun now, with crazy strategies and new things going on, so I think you'll have fun :D
|
good commentarys, no the best PvP ive seen
|
Yea, a lot of commentators don't use Income/Units/Army bars enough. They help a lot
Great comeback commentary, Rise
|
I've missed good commentary for a while now, looks like sc2 will really bring it back.
As for what I'd like to see in the box thinger (top left) APM is a good one to just keep up if nothing is really going on, unit counts are good before armies engage so it numbers of units instead of blobs of units. Also, after and type of harass the income tab is a nifty tool, see just how much damage was done by the attack.
The FPviews are nice, but should be used less frequently in a way that was mentioned earlier. If something goes down like a proxy, FP views are wonderful, when they're building probes...not so much xD
Keep up the good work sir!
|
great commentary! I like enthusiasm, keep it up. I want to see you do some zvt and zvp commentaries.
LOL at Idra, man he still has bm. I am so glad Nony beat him in TSL2
|
|
It is an exciting time, sir. Make another one post-haste!
|
that was a pretty fun game to watch
my tips:
never zoom in, comment on map strategies, comment on unit composition (who is effective against who), use unit bar and army bar more often (when they in battle, or massing armies), use FP whenever you feel like it should be done (did he see the proxy pylon??, etc)
hope to see more in the future!

I completely agree with this, I am so sick of P vs everything/P. Its like all everyone plays is toss...Its actually quite depressing.
I must admit, I'll watch any of sc2ggrise's commentaries though. He's solid ace In my book.

I agree with you on your reasons for leaving, I've just been playing to get ready for SC2.
|
OOOH! There were two parts!! I thought the game ended when the colossus came out.
but reaver > coloososossusuck ofcourse..
|
The clear winners, IMO, on what to show on that bar, are unit counts, and unit production.
Sure, if you have a good reason, you can show anything you like at points. Someone saving gas for mutas? sure, put it up there. Someone just get mega harrrased? sure, show how bad the economy is relative to the other guy. But just to have on by default, what a player has in his army, and what he's adding on, are the clear winners. And that also shows worker count, too.

Agreed on this general point. I thought it was really good up until the warp gate (8:30ish) and the colossus thing. I think you just need to control your volume a bit (but not too much, because you sound great the rest of the time) and be aware of your distance to the mic. Also, do some annunciation exercises for some sounds like your 'p's. IRL, it wouldn't be a problem but it gets picked up differently on a mic.
Aside from that, I thought it sounded really good. Not sure how the strategy stacks up in SC2 yet, but at the very least I think if people used classic announcer teams (color commentator + play by play), you'd make an excellent play by play. You sound like Doug Gottlieb.

great commentary, you were always one of my favorite to listen to.

Rise returns. Now I hope Cholera makes a comeback as well.

Nice job Rise. I appreciate your personality and enthusiasm. The only complaints are related to understanding SC2, which noone really understands at this point. Once the game begins to be figured out, I think you can definitely put a lot more emphasis on things because their will be some context to it.

Maybe do a dual commentary with Combat-ex next time?
Love your commentaries Rise. You and Moletrap got me into this whole thing. Hope you stick around for SC2 and the coming WL finals and commentate them as well
|
On February 27 2010 08:59 Emon_ wrote: Maybe do a dual commentary with Combat-ex next time?
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no. Combat-ex wouldn't even cast anything where he cant talk about himself owning some lower ranked player.
Won't even get into that to avoid a flame war.
The only time to zoom in in a battle when its a very small one, i.e. probe/zeal vs probe/zeal. Even then, only SLIGHTLY to bring in focus. Don't rotate the camera -.-
First person I think really should only be used like korean commentaries, mostly when the heat is on into an intense mid/late game or BRIEFLY from both sides during a long epic fight.
I think the army tab is the best thing to have open most of the time, with quick checks to the other tabs periodically.
normal faster speed please, especially when there is less need to introduce units again and again.
I enjoy the commentaries, looks promising.

Really great commentary, love it. Keep it up.

Seeing new and interesting strategies is part of the fun. The nice statistically analysis available in replay is great.

Always enjoy Rise commentaries because he gets into it so much (like Klazart would but Rise is more clear).
Now get Cholera back!

Really enjoyed this, keep up the good work. I liked how you explained many of the more simplistic aspects of SCII. I have not yet gotten a chance to play, so I didn't know about many of the abilities.

Nice and informative commentary _ big props2that!
but the match was kinda unspectacular... at least the first part....

Fun games! Thanks for the videos and commentary!
|
Did I miss idra saying he is playing protoss in sc2?
|
In my opinion, FP views are great during proxies, macro/preparation and small skirmishes, not during major battles. It's interesting to see the players composure at multitasking.
|
nice commentary
I would suggest doing a better job with understanding SC in general though, so you can talk about the theory more.
for example, when you were talking about the expansions and when to take expansions, you obviously made that up on the fly. the actual case is that in SC1, in the early days, many players often went 1 base directly into aggressive attacking and harassing. But eventually, when the number of harassing options became limited and people became very good at defending, the benefit of harassing and early game aggression began to lose appeal. Terran started going FE more often (oov), zerg went into huge expansion map control phase as well (example, see how yellow and julyzerg's play style differe from the macro and management style oriented savior). That is why SC1 is often has quick expansions, and when expansions aren't quick, they are often timed to mirror a weakspot in the enemy's development. For example, as soon as DTs are out, protoss can expand if zerg doesn't have overlord speed.
But in SC2, the game is still being ironed out. Early game aggression is still very powerful because neither players are sure what all the options are. Neither players are entirely sure of all the build orders, so not sure when the enemy's tech is weak, thus the best time to expand. That's the main reason why expanding early in SC2 is still not as a fine-tuned science as it is in SC1.
anyways, ur commentary on that topic was bad. haha
|
I really enjoyed your commentaries so far keep em coming! I have been watching the streams and didn't quite understand a decent amount of how the protoss spells and abilities worked but now I do (such as the nexus abilities and the sentinal abilities). Good job, Keep em coming and can't wait for more..
P.S. Is Idra going to b playing toss in sc2, and can we see some of him winning please...<- Idra fan here
