It will solve all money problems. It will make all "nerd servants" happy. The perfect advertising media. The nerdiest thing, that a nerd can ever buy. DAY[9] PLUSHIES :D That is freakin' perfect! Could totally be a sweet donation thing, like $5 gives you small Day[9], $20 a mid size, and $50 and up a full on life size plushie. That'd be soooo good.
Exactly, that would be great! Do it Day[9], sell your body, get rich.
@eSports: To my mind, the whole topic is contradictory (from my view from Germany): On the one hand we have thousands of people playing games here. I would even claim that more people play computer games than soccer. In addition, we have sports channels, which broadcast exciting sports lilke throwing darts or Curling. I am so fucking sure that there are more people interested in eSports than in this old-man tediousness. On the other hand, there are almost no reports about our hobby in the TV, and of course no broadcasting of eSPort shows etc... Only one old, fat man in his office chair has to recognize his chance for big money and eSports will spread pretty fast. All we have to do is to convince them of this new chance... (Unfortunately, at least here in Germany, this task seems almost impossible, since games have a very, very bad reputation, but hopefully for instance you guys from the US or from other countries are one step forward in the future and will make the first steps in the right direction...)

Get off your misguided high horse and realize that everyone can spend their money however they damn please. Sean is a very smart guy and can figure out how best to further the community without your indignant financial advice.
I think this should end this whole talk about the donations subject because this is really what it comes down to. Donate if you want, if not then don't. No need for all the controversy.

So did anyone happen to record the pre-stream Rihanna amazingness, checked the youtubes and day9fan but couldn't find it.

Everyone...seriously?
I registered just to post this, I hope you're all happy.
I just watched the 12 minute announcement from Day9. He says he's going to be using all of the ad revenue from blip.tv, youtube, and his income from shoutcasting to put on more awesome Starcraft 2 events. In the mean time, he would like to ask the community for a few dollars to "buy my meat."
He goes on to say, legitimately 30 seconds after saying he would like to live off of the donations, that he will never charge for the Dailies and that he will never try to force people to donate to him. I, as a Junior in college, will never have to donate a portion of my meager stipend to him when I get it in February. If, however, I wanted to...he would be more than happy to oblige.
What's wrong with that? Seriously? Why do we have a full 15 page explosion over this? He's not charging, and he's not even remotely "requiring" or forcefully "pursuing" donations.
He's simply asked that we help him buy some meat. Considering I'm a college student myself, I would love some help buying my own meat. If I could help, I would. But college does not in anyway help me eat beyond the 1000 dollars a semester my scholarships allow for eating. And I'm lucky I got that much.

I don't think anyone has a problem with donating to Day9 for all the awesome stuff he's done. It's just that the announcement seemed contradictory and confusing. I'm still confused about what he's actually going to do. He said he didn't want to use our money for things and then he asks for donations. He said we should look for sponsors but doesn't want to sell out. "Donations" is simply not how sports are run.
Personally, I just think it needs more clarification. I legitimately don't understand what he said.

I just donated. Given all the time and effort he has put into providing entertainment for us all, I see no point not to.

What? You mean my lack of genuine understanding can't be legitimate even if my heartfelt concern is legitimate?
Blarg English! Blarg!
Hell, maybe I'll donate to him so that he'll raise up his camera...

A previous post pointed how it is somewhat strange that day9 is talking about not accepting sponsors while wanting that esports has money into it.
It's not contradictory at all in my opinion. I don't think Day wants to be sponsored as a person or for what he's doing right now for free anyway (and the sponsorship deal probably included ads to be included in the daily or some kind of regular plug of the sponsor, which I'm not sure I would like to listen to). However I think esport needs sponsors (and I'm sure nobody can say otherwise) to get money into it. How to do that? Well we already see that kind of sponsoring in teams themselves. Players are individually sponsored from time to time. We see it in tournaments. And it's normal it's something that should feel natural and good. Other sources of revenue around esport right now? We can list: - Article of clothing (t-shirts, jackets, team jackets) - and then what?
There's a reason it's called e-sport in a financial point of vue : it brings the same kind of revenues (sponsoring, marketing / ads, fanservice) Each are very needed for e-sport to be successfull too. What needs to be happening for it to really be "huge", is notoriety. To continue my analogy, depending on the coverage of a specific sport, it can be either a very "lucrative business" (as in it deals with a lot of money) : like soccer, football, tennis, ... Or a niche (attracts very few select peoples, deals with a lot less money, but appeals enough to work), like fencing, sharpshooting or whatever. Right now e-sport and even starcraft 2 is kind of a niche. For it to be huge, it needs to appeal to the masses and it needs coverage / notoriety. It's what brings all those moneyz to the table.
How to make it happen?
- Day9's first idea as he tells us in this video is to make you yourself make the effort of making this game known.
will that work? Probably not in a reasonable amount of time, if nothing else is done. But it's a first easy step. Donations are a side thing and not a big deal imo. Donate to whoever you want whenever you want but if you want to donate to him, he gave you the way to do so.
* appologies for probable bad grammar / mystakes it's late...

Personally Day[9] is aspiring to do much of the same I want to do after finishing my degree. Make a career out of Esports. I personally would love to see Day[9] succeed such that I could aspire to join his company some day.
