PICK A FUCKING RACE Eh. I think TLO should've stuck with Terran - he's a crazed player, not a macro player.

But saying that...come on now. It's our job as publishers, content creators, writers, editors, streamers, producers, tournament organizers, managers, etc, to create revenue streams, not to ask for donations. Blip.tv, Justin.tv, uStream, YouTube - these services are specifically designed to make money for content creators, and it's the job of those content creators to make it work. Husky, HD & TotalBiscuit are good examples of what I'm talking about, all working full-time as content creators (to my knowledge). Furthermore, that is also the specific job of sponsors. They are designed to fund content creators and networks so that they are economically viable for all sides. It is entirely possible to work out a scenario with a sponsor that does not impede on the content or delivery. There may be small nuances that you'd have to adjust to, but nothing out of the ordinary for the situation. We've lauded sponsors for years for entering the eSports space - why would it be any different for a talk show? Maybe it's just me, but I feel like donations are reserved for someone falling on rough times/had a horribly damaging event happen to them, or to charities such as Child's Play and Get Well Gamers. There have been many people who have poured their soul into eSports/Professional Gaming for a long, long time now. This should be no different. I completely agree with this. And I'd like to add that I prefer to donate to an organisation than to a private, because it actually supports both the organisation and the members. Edit: I actually misread what you wrote at first. I'd say that more often cutting out the middle man is the easiest way to get your money to support the people you want it to, in order for them to reproduce whatever it is that you like.. And to Slasher: I think this whole idea that you have is a showing of ignorance for the system. Because in the end the money is always coming out of the viewerships pockets. Only with add spornsors some of it also goes to them, and doesn't come back out in product that you're tuning in for. It's innovations in the way we see how business works, like how many indy music developers are straying away from the norm and making it big not "selling out". I think Sean and other businesses are finding ways to make things more personal with their viewer-ship. There's no middleman for your money, it goes right where it's supposed to, and you don't have to worry about Doritos taking a cut. Now if you were trying to offer up the argument that the tried a tested method for attaining add revenue for things such as this is a better option... Well then no duh! It's tried and tested. Advertisers would be a much easier way for Sean to make money. But that's not what he's trying to do. Sean is attempting to make everyone happy in the most efficient way possible, while still staying true to his fans and supporters. He's going above and beyond. And I'm willing to bet that this method he is using, because of the sort of person that Sean is and the sorts of people his supporters are, will work beautifully, and mature naturally as any learning business model. I also felt it it very keen that you spoke about HD and Husky. This very part really helps to illustrate what I'm trying to say. Lately they've felt very "mainstream" and haven't really produced the content that I feel caters to the more "hardcore" fans because of that. Sure this is only one smaller part of the over all experience, but I think it's an important aspect that many viewers consider.

Day9 has as much earning potential as almost anybody in this whole burgeoning eSports "scene". If he's rolling twenties two years from now I'll be as happy for him. If he doesn't like the terms sponsors are giving him, then he should get an agent to negotiate for him till he does. None of this is selling out, it's just being practical about who should pay for the content you produce: The viewers or some corporation?

I don't mean to say he doesn't need to eat, but that there are so many other sources of revenue before you get to charging your viewers, even through just asking for donations. Advertising is a tried and true method because it works. I fail to see how a short blurb about Doritos undermines the "hard-core" qualities of the dailies. He isn't NPR doing some hard-hitting story about food additives or obesity where he has to worry about corporate domineering. In fact he's already a corporate man just by how much he promotes the game, which is a product of Blizzard, part of Activision Blizzard, part of Vivendi. The difference is that if I donate I wont force him by contract to say my name on the daily a required number of times each hour. It's unfortunately the kind of shit a sponsoring contract can require. And it's perfectly normal from the corporation point of vue.

Been looking at all his sites that i know of and not seen any donate button so far. On another note it feels a bit like a musician going "fuck no, i wont sell out and go corporate" and instead of releasing albums or even doing live shows sticks to standing in a street corner living entirely of what people donate to him ^^
