Husky seems to be a nice guy, but he has very low knowledge of the game. Hes a total noob.
There's more to casting than knowledge/analysis. Likability, humor, tone of voice, ability to keep up a rapport when there is a lull and to amp up the excitement when shit goes down...all are just as important, if not moreso, than the ability to analyze in an educational way.
Most pro sports commentators, for instance, are abysmal at providing interesting analysis or telling you things you don't already know. For example, John Madden, probably the most famous commentator in sports history (apologies to Marv Albert), was basically really, really good at stating shit that was completely obvious (e.g. "Now, when making a pass, its very important that the quarterback be able to see, because if you can't see, then you don't know what you're looking at.") There are a couple who actually do provide good insight (e.g. Jeff Van Gundy, the coach turned basketball commentator), but by and large that isn't what people are primarily looking for in a sports commentator.
Husky is like a geeked out John Madden. Everything he says is obvious stuff you already know, but he's good at saying it in an engaging, funny, and likable way--and when something awesome happens, he brings the enthusiam like no one else.
Day9 can be good at that as well, but really only when he's casting a live stream. When he's doing the dailies he gets too bogged down in analysis. I mean, its great for learning about the game, and I think people who really spend a ton of time thinking about starcraft get a lot out of it. But if I'm just looking to shut my brain off, watch a fun match and be entertained, the Day9 daily format is IMO inferior to the "Just have fun and crack jokes" approach of Husky.
I'm not a big fan of HD though--he reminds me of Husky, only not as funny and with less enthusiasm.

I think this guy is correct. I'm going to campaign for more TotalBiscuit bashing!

Edit: sorry, my brother typed a bunch of random garbage on my teamliquid account while I was gone.

After a while you understand the strategies enough to just shut your brain off and watch the pretty execution.

people watch sports to be lazyasses and shut their brains off. people watch starcraft to learn
See, this is what I don't get. On the one hand, people on this board are always talking about how they want to see e-sports take off. On the other, they tend to be really elitist about it, looking down their nose at anyone who doesn't take it super seriously, who just watches for mindless entertainment, etc.
Newsflash: Mainstream americans don't really go in for stuff that makes them think too hard, ESPECIALLY when it comes to sports. There will always be that minority who really care and want to get have as informed an opinion as possible. But that is a minority. If e-sports are ever going to stop being a niche distraction and become mainstream entertainment, they are going to have to be presented in a way that average people who don't actually know much about the game (or care to know, for that matter) can enjoy.
Husky and (much as I hate to admit it) HD are helping to fill that role. They get TONS of views, in large part because you don't have to think hard or be informed or even that engaged to watch them. So people who don't even know what teamliquid is, whose interest in the game is 100% casual, who don't have any interest in "learning" or "becoming a better player", but who just want to be entertained for 20 minutes at the end of the day, can tune in and enjoy.
Its fine if thats not what you, personally, are looking for. But to sneer down your nose at it is ridiculous--for e-sports to grow, we need more guys like HD and Husky who are good at getting casual viewers, not less.

Apologies if this has been answered already, but is there any chance that day[9] will cast major bw events, like the upcoming MSL final? + Show Spoiler + Would kill a man or two for the chance to be sereneded by the mellifluous voice of day[9] during perhaps the greatest clash of perhaps the greatest rivalry in BW history.

When are we seeing more Day[9]? #165 Baneling opening is getting old now haha. Good job commentating the IEM, loved day[9] but hated apollo, more dailys!!!
|
we may see him soon, but he's gonna cast at MLG raleigh this friday and saturday so i doubt there will be any dailys before then

When I watch soccer or baseball or hockey it's sure as hell not to become a pro at those sports, it's to have fun. It really seems like a lot of Starcraft players don't follow 'real' sports at all, which is a shame. The hardcore/casual distinction in general feels unique to gaming and is pretty harmful to all parties.

I don't know if you would be interested but I played a match where a Terran placed bunkers at my natural expo so I cannoned him in and hit his main. This was in a Diamond league game. If you are interstellar send me a PM so I can give you the replay.

This is the biggest bunch of bullshit I've ever seen. It's ESPORTS not ELEARNING. Some people watch SC2 material to learn how to get better, and Day9 is the best resource for that. Others watch it for entertainment and may gravitate towards a particular style of commentary for that. Some are entertained by a highly analytical style, others prefer humour and jokes and some like high energy play-by-play and enthusiasm. Still others prefer a mix of all of the above in different quantities.
ESPORTS is bigger than you, it's bigger than me and it's only going to get larger and attract a wider audience with an even wider range of tastes. I'd recommend people learn to accept that there are many different ways to enjoy Starcraft 2 and many different ways to present that content to people. None of these are objectively inferior to each other, unless of course you're watching I Suck at Starcraft 2, which is objectively and scientifically inferior to everything.

this, he did a great imho.
also i like his accent.

You know its getting to be a legitimate sport when people care who's calling the game.
|
You still want casters who can enlighten viewers on why such and such is good but not common knowledge. Day9 does that brilliantly. Dont really find husky too funny, but hes very animated and better then most

true, good job from apollo.

Only thing I didnt like about Apollo is that he kept interrupting Day9 while he was commentating. Everyfight, even if Day9 was talking, he's jump in.
Didnt like that much
