I'll be the first to admit that I'm a huge noob, so that's probably a large part of my problem.
On this mission, you need to defend your base for 20 minutes until you can be extracted from that location. To get the hard achievement you need to kill 4 hatcheries and survive. This is the third mission in the campaign, so you do not have any upgrades (except for what's in the Engineering Bay). I tend to start attacking the Zerg at around 4-5 minutes and I have a force of about 70 mixed of Marines and Medics. I've killed the lower three hatcheries, but my force was largely wiped out so I didn't have enough to go get the final one.
The Zerg units are constantly spawning and seem endless; with a combination of Hydralisks, Zerglings, Roaches and Mutalisks. Please help me get this achievement!
Wait 'til like 6 minutes. That's plenty of time to kill 4 hatcheries on the left side. You should have a monstrous amount of M&M by this point which makes the achievement a joke.
EDIT: Sorry just saw the part where you said you attacked around 4-5 min and still lost ... uh make more ewnat? 2 reactor rax and 1 tech lab rax should get you plenty of units if your macro is decent.
The really simple way to do this mission (did it twice on Hard) is to just make 4 barracks and make two with tech labs. Get a ratio of about 4:1 Rines:Medics and just a-move. You can't get upgrades at this point in the campaign afaik so you're really stuck with those two units. Make 4 bunkers per choke and keep about 2 scvs per bunker available to auto-repair. That's really all you need to do for this mission...
make 1 additional bunker at each of the entrances. Load them with marines and put 1 scv behind each one. Nothing will get through, and if you are having problems, just put down a 3rd at each entrance.
After this you should be fine. Throw up 3-4 more missle turrets at the front of your base as well, and then just start massing marines with some medics.
Hey, I think this should be in the single player section non?
Either way, I'll tell you how I did it:
Built 2 rax with Tech labs and 2 rax with reactors. I only build medics out of the tech lab rax and only marines out of the reactor rax, I also got both the available upgrades. To do this I only attacked the southwestern zerg base...it seems to be the easiest and although I can't remember how many hatcheries are in there, there's a lot. Coupled with the fact that the zerg tries to rebuild hatcheries you need only rally your units here. Thats all I did. I went and attacked when I had a big-ish force and rallied units to the southwestern base, making sure to constantly macro.
Make sure to hotkey your marines separately from your medics so that you can kite enemy units whilst your medics continue healing.
i salvaged the bunkers, and stood by the 2 bunkers at the main.
then x3 reactor and 1x tech, get a good amount of svcs, i had 1+ attack when i attacked, and was 30% in armor.
i attacked after 8-9 mines, and whiped the3 hacteries out easy, and while i attacked, i produced even more marines medics. you dont need to build a defense, just defend with the marines and medic you are building and with 2x scvs reparing the 2 bunkers at main.
There's no way you lost if you attacked with 70 pop units... I remember this achievement being extremely easy to accomplish. I know you say you're a noob, but when you have that many marines and medics you should just roll them.

Check out Campaign/Zero Hour for a full guide on Zero Hour. The guide is written for Brutal, so it should also work on hard!

70 doesn't sound very large. I want to say that when I did it I had about 180ish food, and 7 bunkers, so that's 28, assuming 30 SCV, that's 58 so 112 marines/medics? And I only had about 10-15 left when I killed the last hatchery. Sounds like a macro problem. Just fallback to the top and macro your heart out.
Also, since nobody said. You don't need to win to get the achievement. So just go with ALL your forces for the 4 hatcheries and "leave no man BEHIND" (aka Jim Raynor )
Pretty easy actually, all you need to do is start hitting it sometime around 10 right after a wave of zerg hit your base. Afterward, rush toward one of the zerg base and take out one spine crawler, pull back and will all the incoming forced, and proceed to destroy the rest spine crawler and straggler and you proceed to take out the 2 hatcheries.
Once that is done, you should have like 6 or 7 minutes left. At this point go back to your base and up your marine counts again and wait for the next zerg wave to finish before you move out and proceed to take out the next 2 hatchery using the exact same strategy as the first one.
I recommend taking out the right base first. I know that our of the three, it is harder egg to crack. However, after you take it out, the middle base is extremely easy to take out if you flank it from the right side. Remember, spine crawler hurts, not to have a direct fight the swarm when you are in range of the spine crawler.
I still can't do this, I keep trying and failing miserably. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The Spine Crawlers I think are my biggest problem. They two shot my units. This is getting frustrating.

Get to 100+ food, a-move micro your way in. Easy peasy.

You did something wrong if you went from 112 --> 10-15. I lost barely any units on hard, and didn't start with even close to that many units.
It's really the spine crawlers that are working me. I will sort of walk in, attack, lure their units out to avoid the SC's, and then try to target them once I've killed the units.. But the units come right back again.

Move out at 12 or so
You just need to outmacro the zerg base. Get 4 rax with 2 reactor or so, 30 SCVs mining, just rally barracks to your marines outside a base, micro in and out to lure units from the crawlers, then if you do it right you can soon move in
It's a pretty difficult achievement, just be persistent
I took the lower left base first, the upper right base is impossible to get on Hard since they have 10 hydras or so at all times. Then the upperleft base, and you're set
That video that is shown.. Anytime I hit the lower base there are NON-STOP units coming, if I kill the Nydus worm it simply spawns again and continues producing units.

12 minutes? At 12 minutes my marine/medic force is barely 40. I would sure get owned moving out that soon?
Just wait until after a big attack from the left side and rampage in. Focus-fire the Spine Crawlers quickly, because they 2-shot your Marines without Medics being able to keep them alive. Also bring down the Nydus worm before the next attack wave leaps on you.
One trick my friend found out was to obliterate one base, go back home and defend, then come back a couple of minutes later when they've started rebuilding the Hatcheries.

Nah, move-stop-move-stop micro is great when you're trying to break in against spines with a huge blob of MM.

You just completely missed the point.
I would not at all argue against microing in general, and obviously it helps when you do it well. Lots of weak players don't micro well and end up harming themselves more than helping when trying to micro. He would win the fight with just a+move, so he should just do that instead of risking microing badly and hurting himself with it.
His micro is obviously not very good considering he's moving out with a huge force but somehow losing it.
this was pretty hard for me. i basically produced marines out of two barracks with reactors and built a second a couple minutes with tech lab for medics... i made sure i was constantly producing out of all three rax and the command center, and got the upgrades when i had the spare money. when the last infantry upgrade was done i think i had 30ish marines plus a decent number of medics and i think that's about when i moved out. went for the two on the upper left, went back to defend an attack, then moved out to attack the lower left. the only thing i micro'd was to focus fire the spine crawlers. hardest part is getting up the ramp in the first place, i try to get the units to follow me down the ramp so the crawlers are out of range before taking the units on, then move up and focus down the crawlers. it doesn't matter if you win at this point if it's just the achievement you're going for, but i won by flying my buildings off in different directions (defense was super paltry while i was out killing the hatches.)
I tried it in Brutal. It took me a couple of saves to kill the 4 hatcheries in Brutal (I kill the top-left hatches and top-right hatches). Since it can be done in Brutal, I think in Hard it shouldn't be really hard.
I got it!! I went in there at about 6 minutes and just pulled their forces out and reinforced myself a few times.. Destroyed all the hatcheries in their base, they rebuilt one and I took it out! Yay!!
When moving up the ramp to the zerg base make sure to not just a move. First attack and pull back to kill off some of the units outside the range of the spine crawlers. When you have killed off some of the units move back in. Keep moving your units up the ramp and stop at intervals to get some shots off. If you just a-move up the ramp only a few marines will get in range of the spine crawlers. Keep moving them up the ramp while you shoot until they all get in range. Once you are up the ramp keep your units close to each other so none of them can get singled out by the zerg.
*edit* Oh I see you already made it I guess my suggestions can be of help on other missions too though. It's always important to get all your units in range when attacking through a choke point.
Ugh, this is by no means easy. I just wasted two fucking hours trying to beat this thing.
Finally got it when I abandoned the original bunkers so that I was left with only one choke to defend at my own ramp. Moved out with about 100 MM and took down those fuckers, then camped and waited for them to rebuild.
I would just retreat, salvage the forward bunkers. Save the first and second group of Marines (and get 1/1 upgrades), go back home, block one more wave and you should be good to go. Poke into a base, retreat out of crawler range, kill units that followed you. Repeat until you can safely kill the crawlers. Take out stuff while staying away from crawlers, heal up before/after you engage a defended location. You really should not lose more than 5-10 marines per minute. After you took out 4 hatches, retreat and just defend. Or just quit the mission if all you are after is the achievement. If you go for the left base you will get a few more reinforcements around the time you are attacking, assuming you attack around the time I suggested :p
Not hard at all. Just make sure your base is saturated and later on put 2 scvs on building depots. I make 4 barracks, 1 tech lab (first one), for a 6:1 ratio, but your medics generally survive longer. Move out at 8 minutes left, I was at like 90 supply I think, so that would mean about 45 rines, 10 medics. Make sure they stay in 1 group, close together. If you keep up macro during your attack you'll win easily. 5aaaeaaa ftw!
I think the key to this mission is just taking your time build workers and macro up don't worry about the time limit you'll have plenty of time. Just macro till you think you have enough move out kill the 3 hatches on the left of you, keeping your macro up while your doing it. Then get the units you were macroing and just all in push up to the last hatchery you may get overwhelmed and killed at your home base but you will get the achievement before then at least that's how i did it hope it helps. Edit: oops looked over it a little more and it seems you already have the achievement well congrats and don't mind me lol i cant read.

This took me a bunch of tries but I've found that my problem was attacking too late. At a certain point, maybe with 3 minutes to go, it becomes impossible to make any progress because the computer essentially has an infinite supply of units to throw at you. Things are constantly appearing from the nydus worms out of nowhere and I'm not sure where everything else comes from, but attack before it gets to this point.
I attacked south west a little bit after 10 minute mark. Killed three hatcheries there and then moved north to attack the fourth. Quit after getting that achievement :p

You're quite wrong. This achievement really only becomes possible when you stop your marine ball from attacking 9 different targets. Spine Crawlers and Banelings need to die before they have a chance to do what they do. I tried this achievement with just attack-move, figuring I was doing more harm than good by microing the marines, and got skullfucked every time (four attempts). It was really frustrating. When I started microing my marines and forcing them to shoot down the structures that are reinforcing the Zerg rather than doing what they want, I won. That, to me, is enough evidence that you're wrong.

Was linked on page 1. Thanks for the nonproductive post. Personally, I don't feel that the guide was particularly helpful, knowing what I knew when I was trying this mission, I would have come back to the forums for advice as well. Don't turn this into a new meme, we're going to discuss these missions regardless if there's a guide up.
I had trouble with this one too. What I ended up doing was salvaging the outer two bunkers to build up a bigger MM ball and pushed out at around 10 minutes. Don't push to the base on the left with the ramp, but push into the upper left area and kill off the 2 hatches. Just keep building up the biggest MM ball you can get 'till around 4-5 minutes than push out to the same spot and the hatches should've been rebuilt by now.
I just did this on Brutal, basically hold out till 6-7 minutes left. build order: tech on both rax, double bunker + a supply for wall each side. Filled them with 8 marines and 2 or 3 scv and its invincible mid game. upg weapon and armor. for the hatcheries, just get a big group like 30 marines with maybe 8 medics. head to south west. Almost no micro is needed, except to lure out zerglings and hydra out of sunken's range. (dont fight all at once)
the campaign guide on liquipedea doesn't have much of the tips that are mentioned in this thread because it's only for the brutal players, not for the ones that play on brutal but do the difficult normal/hard achievements separately. e.g. - move to the high ground at the start of the game and salvage the lower bunkers. - wait until 5 minute mark to move out - you can bring all your units, since you don't need to win to get the achievement
Obviously, like others have said, you need just macro for 12+min before you move out with a single massive force and erase the left base.
One thing I found that REALLLLLY helped make this easy was to salvage the outer bunkers and set up my line of defense at the second ramp. Just throw up 2 more bunkers and those 4 can easily hold off both waves without having scvs running all over.
You don't need to beat the mission to get the achivement. What I did was basically roll over the lower left base and get those 3 hatcheries, then rebuild a bit, then go to the upper left base which has a hatchery very close to the road. Let them do whatever to your base, kill a few units then just focus that hatchery.
