being down a player and up a goal vs city I really can't blame anyone for parking the bus. Was what, a fraction of a minute away from giving them a win, too?

They’re hardly parking the bus with regularity. Not even in big clashes, it’s really something they reserve for Man City and almost them alone.

i dont get what the obsession is with having to play possession football in every single match. its one thing to complain if your team is playing boring football the entire season, but if they change up their tactics once in a while in order to win, then whats the problem?

in a contest of 2 teams both trying to play possession based football, you will end up with 1 team that is failing at their job 100% of the time. theres nothing to be ashamed about knowing that your opponent is better at keeping the ball than you and changing your tactics accordingly.

my rant is also aimed at some of the lesser teams in various leagues all trying the same "build up play from the back" philosophy that has taken over football thanks to pep. it doesnt work that well if you arent the better team, so why obsess over it when you can play a much more simple game probably to better success?

Well, to be fair, Spurs are 10 times worse than Bayern. Bayern gives him an insane amount of sitters + the penalties.

Point beeing: Were Kane at City instead of Haaland, he would do the same in PL as well.

Clashes of styles make things fun. I remember when Klopp’s first really great Liverpool side, probably the most intense version of ‘heavy metal football’ blew Man City away in the CL, that was quite refreshing.

I didn’t/dont hate that style of football either, and it was pretty thrilling (or at least ‘Jesus Barcelona are good’ admiration) when it first hit its modern form, but it had started to permeate everywhere seemingly.

There’s beauty in defence also. I like Jose Mourinho much less than I should given he delivered Inter a treble, but holding on with 10 men versus Pep’s Barca was a masterclass, and a real edge of the seat watch. I believe he actually delivered a lecture/talk discussing how he set up tactically, pretty interesting.

I don’t like Atletico but they’re fun pantomime villains at least. At the other end of the scale you’ve the likeable, all-action to the point of borderline suicide Atalanta to enjoy Etc etc

I agree somewhat with the rest of what you’re saying, there’s a lot of really good, interesting coaches, especially in England these days. That they’re struggling at times is really the talent gap, if that was a bit more equitable we’d see some really flourish and do something.

There’s something to be said for pragmatism, absolutely, but there’s a reason many fans of traditional yo-yo clubs actively prefer when they’re in the Championship and can play a bit.

I still think City would be a better team with Kane rather than Haaland given how they both play.

Haaland’s obviously phenomenal and he does give them a different, more direct route, which is a pretty potent weapon as we’ve seen.

You can’t really get much more lethal but I would have loved to have seen Haaland playing for a side like Liverpool at their recent best.

The last 2 seasons have been brutal doing whatever we have to to survive, learning to love the dark side of the game for the points it gets us.
Yeesh.
Hopefully we can edge towards being a midtable side this season.

What emotions, crushing monotony?

Well, more for mid-table teams that never push on. Never have a cup run. Rarely are even threatened with relegation. That’s surely got to be the worst?

At least dropping down a division and being a top dog again, or being engaged in a nail biting survival battle you come through is exciting

Impossible in today's game.
Clough took a team of division 2 nobodies and essentially won everything with them + a few players, with the power of pure management and tactical ability.
It would take years and the resources of a large oil bearing nation to do that these days, and the fans would still complain.
I just dream of the media forgetting we exist, the Premier League not deducting us points, and to be able to play some games without the crippling fear of relegation every weekend.

Sure midtable mediocrity hardly seems like a massive ambition, but if teams like Brighton and Brentford (Villa too) can push for European places with what are essentially midtable teams, then I'm happy with that.
No point dreaming of competing with the likes of City and Arsenal, when our income is never likely to be anywhere near what those teams can generate.

The best a team can do these days is hope for an incredible manager like Unai Emery signing on for them and snatching a Champion's League spot, but even that can do more harm than good in the long run.

Oh I meant like a literal Cloughy resurrection, but yeah in a more sober and sanguine perspective you’re right 100%

For something vaguely equivalent to happen you need like an elite, elite manager to be happy to stay with a particular team for a decade and not be poached by a big boy.

I guess it’s theoretically possible if the next Pep or Klopp happens to be a dyed in the wool fan of a mid table team and would stay put, but aside from that it’s just not how things work these days
