Yeah, Mainz and also Heidenheim in Germany are the dream scenarios you would want to have. Spectacular coach that stays for many many years and then playing international is a real possibility

The Heidenheim story is just out of this world. I love it.

Bodø-Glimt in Norway! Started out in 1916, never had a league win but two runner ups until 2019. Kjetil Knutsen took charge when they were mid tier in the second division. Secures promotion immediately, first year in the top flight they got 11th place, second year (2019) they got second place, then in 2020, 2021, 2023 (and 2024) they won the league, getting second place in 2022 again.

They have a stadium limit of 8200, no 'rich uncle' supplying them with huge influx of cash (unlike for example Molde, the second best team in Norway during the past 5 years), and for the first couple years, many of their players had been failures at other clubs. (Now, they've become rich from success in european competitions, so they can buy better players than other Norwegian clubs are able to). They also gave Mourinho the biggest loss of his career and some other pretty stellar conference league results. I mean - this isn't a team that can ever compete with City or Arsenal etc obviously, but they've been punching several divisions above their weight limit lately. They're in the Europa league this season, I think they have a decent shot at making the knockout rounds.

I do think Kjetil Knutsen might go for it the next time he gets a decent offer from abroad - he's been heavily considering it in the past.

I also think part of the reason why this is impossible to achieve in the very top leagues is the top teams in those leagues aren't just rich and with wonderful player material - they're also brilliantly managed. It's not like some new manager is gonna seriously out-manage Guardiola or Ancelotti over a full season.

It’s borderline miraculous he hasn’t been poached already. And by already I mean multiple years ago.

If football’s problem was merely that a well-run Norwegian team can’t realistically ever enter the absolute elite, that’d be one thing. Ideally we’d have that, that’d be great!

It’s that even well-run smaller clubs in the top divisions of the elite leagues can’t even aspire to that over any extended timeframe.

Atalanta in Serie A have done phenomenally well for a good half decade plus at this point. They’re still not established at the top table. A bad season or two, or a bad choice of successor to Gian Piero Gasperini and who knows what happens?

If someone was to wager, in the next half decade, Atalanta win Serie A, or Atalanta get relegated? I’m betting the latter every time.

They’ll convert Jack Grealish to a deep-lying playmaker and by fine

Yeah that game, can't blame them (from 2nd half) and again i can't "Blame them" for doing it, not got an issue with that style, Mourinho made me love watching a solid defensive display when trophies are pouring in, just when we were doing that Arsenal fans were giving it the big one saying they would never do that, football is to be played and enjoyed blah blah.

From what I understand one of the reasons Knutsen did not go to Ajax is because he receives part of the transfer money from player sales. I imagine that makes it much more difficult for him to move because only clubs from the big leagues can pay a high enough wage to compensate for that. Those clubs are less likely to go for a coach that only coached a club in Norway.

He makes great money for a Norwegian manager but it's roughly the same as the lowest paid manager in the bundesliga, and quite a bit less than the second lowest paid manager in the bundesliga - roughly €800k. I dunno how Ajax compares to that.

He isn't quite as impressive as Ødegaard was. I think he is about as good now, aged 17, as Ødegaard was at 15. Definitely a massive talent, and he is a smart and grounded kid, but I don't picture him being in contention for best player in the PL. Good enough to play for United in the future, possibly, but I think he would benefit from doing one step-stone club before going there. Hopefully we get to play in Europe next season so he can face some top opposition and attract a wider audience.

As a sidenote I work as a teacher in Trondheim's biggest high school. I remember last year a colleague of mine had a girl in his class who was using the cellphone during class and he's like, hey, cellphones down and she desperately goes like PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me keep doing it just this one time I'll do anything any extra assignment absolutely anything PLEASE just this once
Turned out she was snapping with Sverre Nypan and didn't want to lose her shot lol. Footballers r popular.

another edit:
He's a life-long united fan, which might make the move more attractive to him. But if he goes to United, I think it would be with a 'we're gonna loan you out the first season'-mindset - I don't picture him getting much play time for United's first team now. If he keeps improving at the pace he currently is until he's 19-20? Sure.

Here's a highlight reel- honestly pretty impressive stuff for a 17 year old. But Ødegaard was a truly special case.

Therefore, if Rodri was to miss the rest of the Premier League season, using those averages City would finish on 80 points, compared to a projected 91 points with him playing every week.

They might still find a replacement for him right? Or is the trade deadline over already?
