obviously if the question is asking relative to peak united, then weve been shit for 10 years straight now. but everyone knows weve been shit since fergie left so i think the question being asked is probably in the context of new, lower expectations.

I was under the impression that the expectation is still top 4? Is that not so among ManU supporters?

I don't think anyone rational at the start of the season expected Utd to finish top 3 above City, Arsenal or Liverpool and fans were more hopeful for 4th rather than expecting it

Not any realistic United supporter, most of the ones I know think maybe the Europa league is the ceiling, maybe another good cup run

Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool look to be a lock for the CL spots this season, doesn’t leave much to fight for

Based on what we’ve seen so far, it seems doubtful that all of the remaining competition for those slots all finish below Man United

As insane as Chelsea’s spending and bloated squad is (albeit wages are not as high per annum as one would expect, it’s looking better than United’s

Sancho looks a player again, he showed it in flashes at Dortmund, he’s showing it again at Chelsea, yet at United? Nah. One has to question why this keeps happening

He’s getting a lot of slack right now but I think you have to go back to Bruno Fernandes for a player who exceeded expectations and was a top player for United/within the wider league context. It sounds ridiculous but I don’t think it’s that far off. You’ve had some exceed expectations to be decent, or some perform to a high standard as expected. Not many gems really taking the league by the scruff of the neck.

Chelsea have a player who people thought would be good, but nowhere near this good and it’s Cole Palmer. Not all of their buys have been duds despite a questionable overall strategy IMO

I’d be staggered on current evidence if United finish above Chelsea. And I don’t even think Chelsea are necessarily a lock for the CL either, there’s stiff competition.

What do ManU owners / shareholders expect? I thought transfer expenses directly correlate to league placement expectations.

Sancho was a beast the second half of the season in Dortmund if I remember correctly. Maybe not on a Palmer/ Bellingham level but not that much off IMO. But in general it seems everyone that goes to ManU does perform worse. This is not a coincidence

Seems reasonable to me. They’re just not very good.

My brother supports Spurs, I get to be a neutral in the Prem, supporting Inter but it’s quite fun to just enjoy the league, maybe enjoy a team and root for them for a short period without all the tribal shite.

Spurs are flawed, but they’re fun. Glorious (or indeed inglorious) failure is almost a badge of honour for their supporters.

Villa haven’t been up in these echelons for a while, Emery is showing that he’s a top coach and that his Arsenal stint was a blip, and tbh it wasn’t even that bad IMO anyway.

Maresca is getting a tune out of Chelsea’s silly squad, quicker than I expected. They actually look pretty good, and they play some slick stuff. I still feel maybe placating 59 players may prove impossible for any manager and end up tanking morale and performances, but so far, not bad.

Newcastle have started pretty damn well, are very settled and Howe knows what he’s doing. If financial rules hadn’t been tightened and they’d basically kept the same squad +/- a few faces, I dare say they’d be streets ahead of Man United by now.

United just aren’t very good, even in a yin-yang kind of way They’re not a slick attacking side with a soft underbelly. A pressing machine that occasionally gets it wrong. A lethal counter-attacking side that maybe struggles when given the ball. A probing possession side. An obdurate, Simeone style rugged bunch of shithouses.

They’re just incredibly mediocre, whatever the level below a jack of all trades is.

Which genuinely surprises me, Ten Haag’s Ajax side were fantastic. Taking an Eredivisie side to within stoppage time of a CL final, playing excellent football is IMO one of the great achievements in semi-recent European football. But there’s almost nothing recognisable from that side, minus half the players of course.

I had expectations to see United somewhere in EL ranks but they play really bad there too. The game against Twente was only good in some parts, rest was meh. In PL, they get destroyed by good teams without chance and I fail to see what grand plan ETH tries to follow here.

The Ten Haag feud didn’t help certainly.

That aside Sancho isn’t lightning quick, he’s quicker than me mind! He’s technically excellent, can beat a man but he’s not one to drive the ball 50/60 metres at pace. His best work is all beating a player, pass, move, pass move kind of interplay. You don’t even have to watch full matches, you see it in any highlight reel.

Dortmund and Chelsea aren’t perfect sides by any means, but that is something they did/do when Sancho was around.

I was pretty skeptical of Chelsea adding yet another winger to the mix, especially after effectively telling Sterling to fuck off, but it seems they had some kinda plan for Sancho and him fitting into that team overall. Least on early signs.

Sancho started crazy good last season but then fell off too.
Price wasn't the only reason Dortmund said no to Sancho

That was my analysis for the fight for 4-8 was too. I thought Villa would falter this season a bit due to UCL (same thing happened to Newcastle last season where they got destroyed by injuries and schedule bloat). Newcastle with Tonali back and a healthy lineup will be problematic for the league. Spurs I expected to be a bit better than they currently started. Chelsea have honestly surprised me considering I thought with more absurd transfers and a new manager that they would struggle harder, but Cold Palmer is showing out once against why he's one of the best 10s in the world.

Well big teams are losing points so there is going to be excitement in the last round of CL and not many teams already clinched.

Yeah it’s been good so far, an improvement. Despite being a mini-league some of these ties really have that one-off knockout feel, especially when it’s a non-elite side versus one of the big boys

I may have been wrong on this one! I guess the further test will be in the latter rounds and how many ties have meaningful stakes resting on them

Impressive showing from Aston Villa this round, although Benfica destroying Athletico was probably the real standout showing

I love the new champions league format. These one-off games, no return leg in the group stage really means you have to be on top

I never watched Aston Villa play, was the game a deserved 1:0 win or Bayern unlucky with their chances?

Bayern had good chances and Martinez was in excellent form, equally it wasn’t a smash and grab robbery from Villla

Ten Hag*. United has been a mess and a graveyard of managers since Ferguson quit. They need a coach on the level of Guardiola or Klopp to fix it with their current management. I rate Ten Hag highly but he's not on that level.
