Age is actually an advantage on defense, as long as the player is not ancient, as it makes the player craftier and wiser. i've heard this before. intuitively it rings true. is it true? and if it is true at what age do NBA players peak as defenders. in a purely athletic olympic events the average age of a male world record holder is 26.1 years. high jumping, swimming, sprinting, running etc. Then a slow deterioration occurs as the athlete moves through past 26.1 years. I suspect the human male peaks as a pure athlete at age 26. So we can assume that an NBA player peaks as an "brainless athlete only" at age 26.1 years. However, there is much more to playing NBA defense than just pure athleticism. anticipation.. reads.. studying tendencies of opponents... "opponent tells". etc.. all go into making a good NBA defender.. not just pure physicality. The question then becomes.. how long can an NBA player continue to improve as a defender beyond 26.1 years as that player is slowly but surely declining physically. According to Jeremias Engelmann an NBA player peaks as a defensive player at age 29. Source : http://apbr.org/metrics/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8308 Defensive Effectiveness As NBA Players Age: Peak.. Age 29. Interestingly, NBA players peak as offensive players at age 26. Conclusion: NBA players peak as defenders at an older age than they peak as offensive players. JE says its 26 for offense and 29 for defense. i agree.

That said, those charts show how meaningless the term "Basketball IQ" is, because it usually refers to offensive play selection and passing, but the best evidence is that if it exists, it is on defense. Also, those charts are actually more favorable to old players than reality, because the people who fall off harder end up out of the league.

Engelmann attempts to correct for it.

Yeah, which is why the above guy's chart is premature as a means to measure that particular stat, and anyone who supports it is equally uneducated on the matter. This is where I sometimes think Chuck makes sense. Somehow we just have to go back to watching basketball and all this "anulytics Ernie" are only a distraction. While for Chuck they are wrong, I just think they still incomplete and indefinite. Anyone who points at them with the look-here-I-know-everything attitude are just being ignorant.

however, if you have a better analysis and breakdown you should present it.. otherwise you are just engaging in polemics. for the 2nd night in a row Minnesota is making a mediocre offense look like they are the Golden State Warriors.

Obviously with the age and health of many of the players that is going to be a big question mark. I think the last few years there has been the the cavs are not that good at d, then playoff shows up and the effort goes up and all the sudden they are fine. Clearly IT has his limitations with his size but he can drive the offense when LBJ is off the court and LBJ can still dominate both ends and make up for a lot. Yeah, people are eager to write the Cavs off, its ridiculous. This team has a good core and added superstar players who either have something to prove and have finals experience. As Rudy T said, "never underestimate the heart of a champion!"
