Why on earth is he touching his throat and top of his head during that, pretending that he was punched or grabbed or whatever? There's barely contact. And I am actually normally quite supportive of attacking players falling when there's contact even if they are able to stand, because referees almost never call penalty unless the striker falls. But this is a pure dive, made obvious by his pretending-to-be-hurt-in-places-where-he-wasn't-touched-act. Also made even more obvious by his reputation. Some players are cheaters, Suarez is one of them. And it's sad, because if he wasn't, he'd be just about my favorite player to watch, because he's so amazingly skillful, but now I'm leaning more towards hoping that no team he plays for ever wins anything ever again. (Sadly, I think most top teams have equally unethical players, so I dunno who I can really cheer for that has even the remotest chance of winning. ) I can understand a singular, momentary slip-up, but Suarez is such a consistent cheater that I don't see much difference between him and say, a cyclist caught using EPO.
I think you are being rather overly critical because of a bias against the idea of playing a clean game which while understandable is very unlike you.
Because frankly there is no player on the planet not guilty of what Suarez did at some point. The degree to which they do it is a moot point after that. All people who steal are criminals whether someone stole 50 dollars or 50,000. They might deserve relative degrees of punishment, but they are still all criminals, right ?
So you are going into Sharkie territory of hating shit but only making an issue of it when it suits you. You arent even close to their yet, but its on the horizon which is scary enough.
Yes what Suarez did was wrong. He sold it. infact its way worse than what he did in the WC if anyone recalls because atleast in that case he was penalized for it which is what the games laws work to account for.
In this case he was not penalized and he should have been. But as long as he can get away with it, he will do it. Nearly all players will, the system has to help the referee make better decisions. Rules exist in the game because players will have a tendency to do things that are outside of the spirit of the game. If everyone always played clean you wouldnt need rules or enforcement.
A dive and a professional foul (that didnt get called) to stop a goal are essentially the same thing. Yet the latter gets little in the way of outrage. Atleast not in what I have seen
I dont remember the same level of outrage when City got shafted against Spurs. There was sympathy sure but no one really said anything about how Walker was a cheat. Infact your very own comment was something about how he was clever or did "just enough", perhaps im misquoting someone, forgive me if that is the case. Was that not essentially the same thing ?
Let me ask you a question another question. What do you think of Thiery Henry? Do you think he is scum ? After all CL's happen every year, what he did denied an entire nation and pretty drastically changed history. I think you know where I am going with this.
Its fine that people have opinions on certain issues, but lets be consistent.

No, I am very consistent. The shit I hate on I always hate on no matter what.

yes, you are correct, you hate on Barcelona always.

Any guesses on how ManU will play for the next three games when Zlatan is suspended? As far as I can tell, their official available forwards are Martial, Rashford and Rooney. Are they just going to play Martial as striker or can we expect something more dramatic?

I said I could understand that people have bad moments, and I have no problems forgiving that. Henry belongs to that category for sure. But I've seen so many incidents with Suarez that I now consider him a consistent cheater.
Someone like Ronaldo used to be a diva diver, but I haven't seen that behavior from him for several years, so I don't really hold past transgressions against him. Hell, even Costa I've given props for behaving much nicer this season than past seasons - and my past hate for him is way stronger than my current hate for Suarez. I also didn't really have any preference in yesterday's match, I mean, I'm no Barcelona fan, but I don't like PSG at all. I just.. wasn't really able to appreciate the comeback because I felt it happened because of cheating. So in a way, Suarez robbed me of the enjoyment I otherwise would've had, and it pissed me off?
Me giving props to walker, I'll grant that that's hypocritical. I dunno why. Maybe because when I played football myself I was a defender and I loved giving tiny little nudges that put strikers off balance, and it was like, the most perfectly executed nudge I had ever seen? ;p Still though, yeah, I don't think there's a big difference between the two. But in a way it's like, a nudge is similar to a striker going down when there's contact, and I felt that this was more of a full out dive, even if there technically was contact. Honestly, thinking more about it, I think what got me the most isn't that he dives, it's the way he acts like omfg HE SHOT ME IN THE HEAD oh no wait THE THROAT no wait MY BODY IS ON FIRE oh he gave penalty IM FINE. Much the same way how the two most egregious examples of diving that immediately come to mind are Rivaldo's and Busquets, because of the faking of injury, rather than the faking of being tackled?

Again the degree and severity of the infraction as far as perception goes doesnt make it any worse practically speaking .The net result is the same either way. The degree of egregiousness you are describing is just perception and how it makes people "feel", at the end of the day, the end result is still the same for the most part.
Also regarding your comment about Walker, see now your lettings perceptions get in the way. He literally stretched his arm out and pushed him. If he had been close enough he probably would have pushed him harder. He mad zero effort to even conceal it as a barge or a shoulder to shoulder. You could see an outstretched arm.
Thats kinda the same level in my opinion as going down without contact and pretending like you got shot. Atleast in terms of impact to the game itself. That the latter looks worse because its annoying as fuck is again an issue of opinion which is fine to have. But the net affect to what is fair or not is the same in either case. Which is really what we all want to see.
I dont give a shit that Suarez rolls around like a wanker when he gets brought down. I care that he should get penalized.
edit:I feel like I said the same thing twice in different ways, but whatever.

How's the turnout for these ICC matches in the States? Last year we had Athletico Madrid, Juventus and Spurs in Melbourne and the largest crowd was only 40-50k'ish. Don't think they will hold it again here any time soon

Well seeing how the Real Madrid game filled a 300k stadium in Michigan I doubt it will be difficult not to fill seats.
Now when will they announce it and when do tickets go on sale...

I'm fine with the ref making a wrong call on Suarez's fall because it was a well executed one. On TV it looked like a clear penalty when I was watching it live. When the replays were on, tho... what a cheater. I'm also surprised the sideline man didn't call the last goal an offside because Roberto was perfectly positioned right before Neymar's pass, but he looked like he was 5 steps ahead of everyone else when the ball was in the air. Overall I have the feeling it taints the victory. Feels undeserved. You can't blame PSG's lopsided loss on the ref, but you can blame them not going through on him.

His finishing hasn't been anywhere remotely good enough most seasons to justify such role and he seems to be a better fit a bit lower on the pitch, but it's still kind of an entertaining though to have him playing striker now.

he isnt played as a striker at man utd. hes played in the 10 role or on one of the wings. he hasnt been the front of the attack at man utd yet and i doubt he will

Rostov draw for Yanited was ok in theory but i would have fancied them to finish the tie there with a 2 goal win but they end up drawing and making the Thursday game even more important. Monday trip to Chelsea without Zlatan could be very interesting now as im sure Mourinho is not caring about FA Cup when he has Champions league to chase either via 4th place or Europa league win which is looking more likely.
|
Would Europa league win add a additional CL spot for England or would ManUtd take the spot from #4 away?

Europa league now adds another spot to whoever wins the competition. So last year Spain got 5 teams so hopefully if Yanited pull there fingers out we could go in next champs league with 5! :D
Only chance of taking 4th spot away in England is if Lesta/City win champs league and either don't finish in top 4 and then Yanited win champs league. That will then take 4th spot away.

It's not likely at all, he wasn't played striker at Dortmund during his best years either. It's more of a fun off-the-wall though than anything I'd expect from ManU, especially under Mou.

Ok, so europa league actually has become more important than finishing top4 now, no? You get money, a trophy and a 100% CL spot

Well they changed the champions league remember. Where top4 is going to automatically go straight to group stage so no qualifying spot for Germany/Italy/Spain/England anymore just straight 4 into groups.
But yeah it still always worth trying when premier league so competitive now.
