Brazilians take this kind of thing in stride. You're also a day late on wishing them a happy Brazil-Germany day ![]()

Two games in a row with a super close late minute post hit and also two games in a row with a blatant penalty not called. In the last one the defender actually played keeper and reached for the ball from the ground, stretching his arm as much as he could. A bit hard to believe the ref didn't see it tbh. At least the game was good and Messi's freekick was spectacular.

Depends what happens in Copa and CL. If Barça goes out vs Bilbao and Real gets tougher opponents in quarters of the CL, they'll lose a lot of energy. January/February is basically one game every 3 days if you reach the Copa finals. 8 points will be a lot for sure, but last year Barça had something like a 12 point lead? And ended up with just 1 point ahead of Real.

I think long term Dave has to go, because as we have seen against Spurs, his height is a weakness. But he has been playing too good though. Having such selection headaches is a blessing I guess. Are you forgetting Dave is actually a fullback?

That was a hugely impressive performance by Real Madrid. They have one foot in the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey after that display. Marcelo, Modric and James were the standout players for the home side, but Sampaoli will be disappointed with how his side were completely blown away this evening. From after the game! http://www.eurosport.com/football/copa-del-rey/2016-2017/live-real-madrid-sevilla-fc_mtc886422/live.shtml So you would assume Real are heavy favorites to not get beat in that game which then sets up 2 more games they don't need to lose in and it's finished ![]()

They are solid favorites but it is far from over - Barcelona still has enough quality for them to go on a crazy win streak at some point. I was about to reply that that's a cup game, but they have to play away vs. Sevilla in the Copa, and then 3 days later again in the league. Too bad they had a home game vs. Granada. An away game would have allowed them a nice week in Andalusia ![]()

They could have been 2 weeks in Andalusia.

- 16 groups - Each group has 3 teams - The top two teams from each group progress - Group matches will never end in a draw. Penalties will be used, if necessary, to ensure each match has a winner and a loser. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/286971e582e64ea89f25620ffe47f10c/guide-fifas-options-expanding-2026-world-cup I was opposed to expanding world cup until I read about the penalty idea, because of England alone this will be fantastic entertainment.

It's not more matches at all. 16 groups of 3 is 2 matches each in the group phase, and then a Ro32 knockout phase. So to reach the Ro16, that's 3 matches. Currently, it's 8 groups of 4, so 3 matches to reach the Ro16. The main difference is the winner required rule, which means more extra time and penalties. However, the main problem I see is that most of these extra matches are going to be things like Germany - Togo. The world cup group phase has enough inconsequential matches as it is. Adding to that aspect of the world cup does absolutely nothing. Just ignore it and tune in at the Ro32. The extended Euro fell flat as well, and it was simply better when it was shorter. Perhaps an argument can be made that inconsequential teams will get money and publicity which will provide a boost to football in those countries that cannot be gotten in any other way, but that argument hasn't improved African countries' football so far. They have been interesting flavour opponents in the groups and early knockout rounds, but not once a serious competitor, despite all the exposition. Simply adding more Asian, African and Polynesian teams is not going to improve the quality of the world cup, and by keeping the quantity of games per team the same, it just means more curbstomps, or even worse, ultra defensive lineups trying to drag it to penalties, in comparison to interesting matches.

An added downside is that the hosting costs are expected to go up by over 10%, and hosting costs for the world cup are already balooning. When NL-BE put in the bid for 2022, there was actually a lot of resistance within the Netherlands about the costs, and that it was generally not worth it. And that's two countries with most of the infrastructure already in place. Bids like the South Africa and Brazil world cup show how expensive the event is for countries that do not already have the infrastructure in place... and the social aspects of hosting the cup in third world countries was also highlighted. Although not as much as Qatar is showing with their slave labor to build the stadiums.

I guess one extra team from South America is always good, and two or so more from Europe is okay, but Asia and Oceania do not have a lot to offer beyond the teams that already make it in. That will just mean well get to enjoy more dictators and presidents that aspire to become dictators will get to use the world cup as a marketing opportunity. Maybe we will get a rotation of winter and summer world cups? Lots of middle eastern oil countries to go to.
