Ok so i miss read the new format, it 16 groups of 3 into 32 team knock out single elimination ok :D
However...
La Liga are planning on taking FIFA to court to stop the World Cup expanding to 48 teams.
A senior source at the Spanish League says they will do everything possible to reverse the FIFA Council's decision to increase the size of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams.

They also threatened to sue/block/tantrum the winter world cup. Same tactic now, they just want a sizable slice of the projected 500 million more this is supposed to net.

Just read this is going to be the new way the spots are distributed amongst the continents:
![[image loading]](http://pbs.twimg.com/media/C1yy9ExXEAAxrbX.jpg)
Note it's not final yet, but close. But this looks terrible. Only 3 more for Europe? In the FIFA World Ranking (yes I know those suck) you'll find 18 European countries before you get to the first Asian country and 20 European countries before the first African. Realistically #17 in Europe is on par with the best from those continents too.
I'm all in favor of making this a global event, but the way it is currently is more than enough. Free qualification for Japan, Korea, Australia and USA every 4 years...while Africa is just a lottery since none of them have any tactics. /rant

The +3 for Concacaf is what boggles my mind.
Mexico, USA +2 seemed like a pretty fair deal so far. Costa Rica did surprisingly well, but Trinidad and Tobago and Panama are the only other two I can remember qualifying, and they were pretty awful. I guess they really really really want to give Canada a shot at participating, but do we really want 3 more of those teams? At least African teams are usually entertaining.
6 for South America. Just let the whole continent participate already :D

Yeah Asia get 8.5 so that is just giving them enough spots so China can qualify or what? African teams are annoying in World Cup due to they are normally so insanely fit and used to playing in intense heat that they end up giving any team a good game due to being able to play 10 behind the ball and work so hard for the whole game.

Are you kidding? African teams are the most disappointing ones in each world cup. Asian teams usually surprise/upset at least one European country. African teams get more hype than England each WC and crasher harder than them. That's a massive feat.

What I really would like to see is that (some of) the additional spots will not be given to any particular confederation, but that they are decided by intercontinental playoffs. Of course, that's probably never going to happen, but it could greatly reduce people whining that some continents get more spots than they should.

Im quite confident that the last two world cups, group stage games taken into account as well that African teams have at least out performed the Asian side. 2014 Ghana drew 2-2 with Germany and then proceeded to not even make it out of the group lol. I just think they are always super fit and give tough game because they are not good technically but a decent coach can get them into 2 banks of 4 rather easily. Like Japan could do that too, but they don't because they want and like to play football and move the ball quickly and are much better technically. However Ghana have been further than Japan in the last two World Cups for example.

I hope this gets repealed if only because China doesn't deserve to get a free trip to WC. I imagine it's the same for a lot of other countries in competitive regions. We already have vastly outclassed teams in the WC every year.
|
Ehm... so correct me if i'm wrong but the new format won't necessarily increase the number of games to reach the final right? (7 games if I recall correctly?). If so what's going to be Spain or any other football federation main counter argument against (possibly) a shit load of more money from sponsorship (imagine if China goes to the W.C, the amount of money FIFA will generate from this market alone)?
I get it from the spectator's point of view you want a quality tournament but same argument could be made for the Olympics where the rest of the world should just fuck off and let the United States and China, Russia and a handful of countries to battle it out.
I mean I personally don't mind more teams, if that's going to promote football as a whole.
|
I heard Perez and Bartomeu are all for the new format, so I don't know what weight La Liga will have in this anyway... Also what happens if multiple countries host the WC? They were implying that WC would not have just one host anymore, to spread the risks of hosting. Then all the countries are invited? Then they have to change the number of qualified teams for each region?
Canada/US/Mexico in 2016, then who qualifies in CONCACAF? xD

Stupid. They already ruined the Euros this way by letting weak nations have a free ride.

All they see is the players they're paying a shit ton of money go to a tournament for a.month and get back overworked / injured. I can see some associations being against this.

Yeah but like he said there is no extra games which i thought there was but there isn't. So how can you complain it is hard, the only complaint i have seen so far is "there is nothing wrong with the 32 team tournament, why change it" but how can Europe complain of that when we just changed the Euros to 24 teams and soon to be 32.

Really? The biggest complaint is that they got rid of the group stage in Ro32. The best part of all big tournaments

Well now its a RO48 group stage into a 32 team knockout mega bracket. Slight change in format but now be hilarious, but again that don't concern none of the FAs does it. I mean they can't sue FIFA for changing the World Cup because the beautiful RO32 group stage is now a RO48 group stage surely.

Ufff. The new format. Matchfixing incoming -.-

I dont know how many group stage games they are going to have per day, but assuming it is 4 (which looks the most likely option), some teams will have wait for 4 days until they know if they are eliminated or will advance.

Well I think you missed my point I get if if clubs are against the World Cup, or any other tournament of similar kind for that matter. But I don't get why clubs would be against the new format (48 vs 32 teams) since they number of games will be exactly the same. One thing I can see is that perhaps a 48-team tournament would drag on longer, which would result in less rest time for players before a new tournament (though is this confirmed or will they make it work so that more games will be played in a day to not extend the overall duration?).
Quality wise though, the last round of the group stage is now replaced with a knock-out Ro32. That and the fact there are only 2 games during the group stages will definitely make teams play more seriously in all of their games (less chance to overcome their initial fuck-up). I personally find it more entertaining this way.
