As long as it's the first leg of a relay then any records set for that distance count.

If i join them at their last 400m i'd still lose. It's really amazing how much fitter Olympic athletes are compared to the average person. If you can run 10km in 50mins to 1 hr it's considered decent but they do it in half the time wtf.

Second 5k was pretty quick at 13:11, but that's already moving way into Farah territory to get anything done. Admittedly it's just outright tough to beat a 3:28/59 flat guy, but the one possible way to do it with a brutal pace from start to finish never materializes. Would be fun if we could get a prime Bekele/Geb out on the track. - Really impressive run from Murphy to get into the final taking out both Kshot and Souleiman! From 2nd place @ NCAA to Olympic finalist, this season has certainly gone well for him. Rudisha looks ominously good, almost seemed bored running 1:44. Mahk Daddy also looks scary right now. Should be an excellent final! -Men's 400 is going to be fantastic as well, with James/Merrit/Niekirk all looking really good in their semis. I'm not even sure who to pick, probably Niekirk as he is the only guy in history ever to go sub 10/sub 20/sub 44. That's a terrifying combination. -Mens 100 final is tomorrow night as well. Bolt's only real threat should be Gatlin, but neither are going quite as well as last year. Can Bolt hold it together one last time...he almost didn't last year, but somehow in champion fashion pulled that win out of his ass. Money's on Bolt, but it's certainly going to be a tense 9.xx seconds On August 14 2016 10:07 classicyellow83 wrote: It boggles my mind how they can run 10,000 meters in such short time. I'm willing to bet the typical 25 year old male would struggle to run even one lap at 10k pace (roughly 65 second 400 pace). Try it some time, go down to the local track and try to run half a lap in 32-33 seconds and see how it feels. Or try for 200 in 30 seconds...then imagine doing that for 5km! It's one thing to know the elite runners are running fast as hell, but to actually experience it... Of course, as you mentioned they can then close in 52-54 seconds for the last lap when the pace isn't insanely fast (sub 26:30).

For a guy in his 20's I'd put 'decent' at somewhere in mid 40s; and good at breaking 40. I've never seen anyone run consistently, have a reasonable BMI (sub 25), and not be able to break 50. A few struggle to break 45 is they take things somewhat serious. Many struggle to break 40, even with consistent 60km-100km a week training with quality workouts. Running at that level is definitely an insane combination though. You have to realize, while distance runners sure as hell aren't Bolt...they are still crazy fast. If you can't run a 400m (one lap) in 48-54 seconds forget trying to be an elite distance runner...you're just too slow. Their is no way you can ever be controlled running low 60 seconds laps if 58 seconds is all out for you. One big advantage though is their weight. I'll bet the average fit dude at your local 5k/10k has a BMI of 22-25 and a BF% of maybe 12%-18%, so for a guy who is 175cm probably weighs 70-75kg. Typically elite runners at that height are 55-60 kg and a BF of 4%-7%. 15kg is worth a TON. Anywhere between 6-10 minutes over a 10,000m race. I said it before, but I'll say it again. It's sorta impressive to hear how fast these guys run. It's another to experience. Go out to the track and try to run half a lap as fast as you can. 30s is elite 5k pace. 32s is elite 10k pace. Trying that will really open your eyes up to what those guys can do in way just hearing about it can't.

A 10k in 45 min is decent for someone who train, but for the average person between 50 and 60 min mean you are relatively healthy and is a respectable time. But ya these athletes are crazy.
