I agree. We should outlaw gambling. Or, better yet, merely crusade against them in the public square.

The shortness of the season is certainly something to think about. We are talking, then though, about parity of result. The most interesting argument comes from a "parity of opportunity"- does every team have an equal opportunity to succeed through their own skill. I think my previous argument that football provides the most chances for an organization to show ability holds true.

Disagree, QB drafting is about 50% of a team's success and is mostly luck. The new MLB CBA is incredibly groundhog friendly to small markets (royals, Cardinals) and the minor league system is the most rewarding to "smart teams" of all the major sports.

I think the emphasis on having an elite quarterback is overrated. Let's look at the quarterbacks in the last few Superbowls: Brady, Ryan, Newton, Wilson, Crippled Manning, Flacco, Kaepernick. Rodgers hasn't even been in the SB since 2011. QB play is important, but it's not like there are only 4 available. There may not be 32 great QBs, but there certainly enough passable QBs for a good portion of the league to compete.

The talent is much more abundant than it is in the NBA.

We've been going back and forth between opportunity vs outcome, but the outcome in baseball is just so random that I can't take it seriously.

The NBA is certainly the least parity. Unless we are considering international sports like Champions League.

NBA has the least parity because there are only 5 players at the court for one team at any given time. NFL has 11 on offense, 11 on defense, lots of injuries, lots of rotating players in and out, lots of ultra specialized players. Coaches also play a bigger role in terms of play calling and game planning.

The NFL's cap system also plays a part in its parity. Teams can go all in on specific seasons by shifting player compensation to other years. It allows the shitty teams to be competitive in certain years by sacrificing another year.

Rotator Cuff surgeries are bad news.
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/19039017/carolina-panthers-qb-cam-newton-successful-surgery-torn-rotator-cuff

i won't believe Newton's throwing arm is back to full strength until it happens.

Newton can't run as much because of his concussion problems.. and now his throwing will be worse. oh well.

+1, add the Andrew Friedman run Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Their minor league system was a starting pitcher factory. it was great watching guys making MLB minimum mow down New York's famous , high-priced hitters. Every home grown Devil Rays pitcher threw the same 4 pitches.

the MLB playoffs are hard to take seriously due to randomness. when baseball made the 162 game season much more important prior to 1994 and 1968 it was much better. the 162 game regular season of MLB is an interesting competition.

a proper MLB structure would be 4 divisions.. 2 in each league. the 4 division winners meet in a 28-game, 30-day round robin playoffs.
1 off day every 2 weeks. this will never happen. however, its a much better method of determining the best team in MLB than the current system.

if that's considered a sin i think i'll be ok. i said a lot in my last post so you'll have to be more specific.
regarding baseball the closer it is to the pre-1968 era format the more congruent it is to the nature of the game.

Romo is a good guy, he'd make a nice addition to the tired casting roster.

Can't be worse than Sims.

As a cowboys fan I've ragged on Romo a lot during his career for failing in the clutch. Always great stats until the game counts etc.

But all that aside, he had a good career and did start to finally perform in the later years. Personality wise I've always liked him, very knowledgeable as well he should do a great job as a broadcaster.

Dak performed too well. And no one can justify spending the money on Romo. I think he made the correct decision.

Romo was as clutch as Manning. He just had nothing else around him. It's not his fault that their playmaking became hilariously predictable as the season went on and the game was on the line, despite that they usually had good running backs. Their big problem, though, was the lack of an NFL secondary.

Yeah its all about the $$ when u can dak at his salary you can just surround him with so much more talent than Romo. What sucks for Romo is by the time he had a complete team around him his body betrayed him. He was the sole reasons he was in those clutch games because for ever he had a god awful o-line and a leaky as hell defense. People often thought the cowboys were better then they were cause they had a couple of big stars, but over all until 3 years ago this was a bad football team. And even so the defense is pretty shaky. Hopefully they can use the romo money to shore up that D!

Well, they lost Church. :/ Good riddance to Claiborne, though.

Do we like any of the QBs who may be drafted this month? Who presents the best risk/reward proposition?

Trubisky is a dud, Kizer looks like a dud, and Mahomes looks like a one gimmick offense pony. Watson looks meh too lol. My guess is that maybe one or two of the top ten will turn into a Carr type under the radar pick, otherwise this years class is quite mediocre, if not outright awful.

I expect Trubisky to be a late first rounder at best, and that's based on the norms of certain teams willing to reach for QBs *cough* Christian Ponder and Jake Locker.

I'm torn on the talk about trading Sherman I mean he's the best, but he has been slipping ever so slightly. If they can get crazy good deal I guess, but I still remember the Mariners getting rid of A-Rod and it feels like that.

Sherman feels like to much a part of the team though, it would have to be a ridiculous deal (or him leaving to get an absurd check).
