Overall you need to be extremly naive to think that most of footballers aren't doping when it is huge money sport with almost no controls.

For example in cycling or athletics its a strict red line and leds a lifetime ban if caught. In NBA and NFL tho everyone is on doping and noone can convince me otherwise.

My understanding is that for the drugs that are used it's less about performance enhancing and more about speeding up recovery, which makes sense. Sure having better stamina and being stronger is useful, but it's not what defines a football player like in endurance or strength based sports, and the potential gain doesn't outweigh the risk. Recovery however is super important (and obviously indirectly boosts performance as well - I'm just saying that there's not much suspicion of them using EPO or whatever).

I did read an article about some Norwegian guy who semi-complained about having had to take a drug test after both the previous first games - seems like here they basically randomly select a couple guys each match day for testing - obviously there's no real point checking the same guy twice though. We have this football talkshow in The Netherlands and they've told stories how they got pills from their doctors and would be running like madmen the rest of the match. This is in the 70s. It's pretty useful to still be able to run at your max in minute 80. The difference between catching a ball on time or to late is a matter of seconds at most. You also make less mistakes when you don't feel exhausted.

I remember that Barton said few years ago that he was tested once in 10 years of professional career. From what I've read they almost exclusively test urine so transfusions and EPO day before the game are rather risk free.
