Pakistan have got themselves in trouble already losing their away leg 3:1 to Yemen. The 300 Yemeni in the crowd must have gone wild. I guess I should parenthetically add that maybe there's a history of the Soviet Union bringing football with it. All the Central Asian (Stan's) as far as Afghanistan will have their culture intrinsically linked with that of the Soviet Uninon for a fair period of their semi recent history. Perhaps an interesting note on how sporting culture can be influereneced by history. You only need to look at the world of cricket to see how Emprie has culturally shaped modern countries sporting interests. I don't remeber them putting a great perfomance in at the World Cup. I guess England have a ludicrously easy Euro qualifying group which will falsely inflate are ranking by the next time I bother looking at it.

Both are ranked so low they have to go through first round of qualifying something that illustrious football nations such as Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Guam, Hong Kong, Syria, Palestine and the Maldives don't have to bother doing. India makes more money for the European football than all of western Europe combined at this point (in broadcasting, merchandise etc). India has little excuse for not improving imo. They have everything, resources, investment, population, fans, (the Indian league was massively profitable). You will see them get alot better in the next decade (but not like WC qualification good, just better ranking maybe) Pakistan has no money and we are pretty high up on failed state indexes. Plenty of people watch football, plenty play it but just casually. There is 0 investment in sport. Like negative in the sense that people in any position of power or influence in a sporting ministry or a board will rob the coffers and wipe their hands clean. Team sports that arent historically planted, you need investment to develop. There is no power there half the day in elite households, normal peoples lives are a struggle to survive so no one is interested in pursuing a future that doesnt exist. Not many people are developing any sport period and football ranks pretty low on the list. But all of this interest is like 10 years young, in both countries. As for why which sport is popular Thats simple. England tried to control the world at its imperial peak in 1 of 2 ways. Colonization - Cricket (overlords teaching the gentleman's game to their peons), Colonization was the only way any country was going to give a shit about cricket. Its complicated, difficult to arrange and takes allottt of time. So unless your dick of a noble is forcing everyone on the Bungalow property to play its not happening. Using proxy businesses to strong arm the leadership of a country by ensuring their power was dependant on Western business- The middle east, South America, Africa - Here football was an innocous working class game not seen as an imprint of the Brtish Raj like cricket was. Same reason it was easily accepted in Europe, its an everymans game.

I guess as you rightly pointed out Pakistan has more important things than sport to worry about at moment. Hopefully the situation there will improve and Pakistan can become stable enough to care about and have a propper football scene in the future. I don't want to talk to much about cricket because this is the football thread after all (basically stop reading now if you don't care about cricket). There's no doubt at all that crickets past is very much as you describe. To have a propper full on match you need good equipment and more importantly you need a large area of flat pristine grass that can be very hard to find in a crowded neighbourhood. But I was reading an article about India's obsession with Sachin Tendulkar and how every kid in every street is playing cricket with just a tenis ball, a bat (or even just a lump of wood) and a trash can or a wicket painted on a wall. Cricket doesn't have to be and isn't necessarily a game for the rich all you need is some kids with pashion and they can play the game anywhere with almost anything. I really don't think you can make the arguement that football is for everyone and Cricket is elitist. Edit: O.K sorry Rebs maybe I got the wrong impresion from what you where saying. It's easy to misinterpret things on the internet.

I have never been to Pakistan or India. So I am not remotely in the best position to coment on the state of sport in these countries. I hope the game in India has a successful future and the first years Super League looks very impressive. 26,505 is a very reasonable average attendance in line with what we see in La Liga. I hope the fans continue to come in future years. having a propper professional league in India is bound to see the level of the game rise and the should eventually start to move up the rankings. I really don't think you can make the arguement that football is for everyone and Cricket is elitist. No I didnt say its elitist now. I have grown up my entire life playing on the street. Everyone does it. Ive done it all. + Show Spoiler + Using school books as bats and crumpled papers as balls with chalk drawings on walls to make wickets. Using ping pong baddles as bats and using 2 stones for wickets, flip flops, 1 brick for the nonstrikers end. We ] have bats designed specially for use with tennis balls with electric tape wrapped around them. (the most common form) thats why everyones a fast bowler. Because with a tape ball if your not fast your going to get hit into the next housing society The iterations and ingenuity is endless. That having been said you see this is just casual play, Just because your country is passionate about something doesnt mean it will translate to being good at it at a professional, international level. With football the financial and development related barriers are easier to overcome. Not so with cricket. There are more well managed football pitches in Pakistan than there are cricket ones. I am talking about how they gained popularity in their infancy. Cricket was forced on colonies as an elite sport, but we embraced it because thats all we had and we turned it around. Football was not forced on anyone. The world embraced it for its own sake. That is why its a bigger sport. And frankly its a bigger sport. I dont think there is a bigger cricket fan than me on TL but I will tell you football is a better more inclusive sport. Anyway this is a bit of a digression because I dont think anyone else cares about this. Sorry about that.

It's a nice change of pace. Going off Rebs point, I think another reason football is so popular is because it's cheap to play. All you need is a ball and some space. No fancy equipment necessary. Heck, you could probably play even if you don't have shoes, though I wouldn't recommend it.

That season he broke gerds muller record of most goals in a season. In the calendar year of 2012 he broke pele's record of most goals in a year. He already has 41 goals atm and he needs to score more than 30 in the last 2 months of the season to equal this record. Insane stuff.
