Basically the Rockets going two directions. On the FA front, they will go after, in order, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Kyle Lowry. If they do this, they will trade Jeremy Lin for capspace once they've gotten a guarantee from one of the above FAs. The trade has been lined up, but won't be executed until a FA says yes. The other direction is Kevin Love, which they can use Lin to match salary with Minnesota. I don't know if they have the assets necessary for Love, but they would certainly give up all their FA targets to obtain him. The Rockets are very much in Love. The deal will be consumated in July, which is when the NBA calendar year turns, giving the Pelicans the capspace they need for Asik's contract. As well as the ability to trade their 2015 1st round pick(1-3 protected, 20+ protected, meaning the Rockets get the pick if it's between 4-19 or else it rolls over to 2016, and so on).

Should probably keep aminu though for the extreme ultra difficulty defensive front court. Let's run through this: Spurs, Thunder, Clippers are 100% playoff locks barring massive injury problems. I think it's safe to say that the Rockets, Warriors, and Blazers are all good shots to fill in the next 3 spots. So, who are you knocking out of Memphis, Mavericks, Pelicans, and Phoenix? I for sure wouldn't knock out the Mavs. They made it last year and they just got Chandler. So now it's the Pelicans vs Memphis and Phoenix. I would personally take the Pels over either one of them in a vacuum, but I wouldn't say they're favorites to get in over both of them. Atleast the Wolves probably won't have Love so they won't also be competing for that spot like this past year. There's always a world where Eric Gordon stops being horrible and Davis goes on to be MVP level but I think it's less likely. The Pelicans are not a shoe in for the playoffs. I'd say they're a modest underdog, given their defensive woes (which isn't something just plugging in Asik can fix) and the weird bench/starter minutes distribution that has to happen to justify Anderson and Evans.

This year he will be good value. The problem is that the contract is expiring and he will have to be overpaid. I wouldn't even mind so much about overpaying Asik (everyone ends up overpaying bigs) if the team wasn't already so horrendously cap starved by Gordon/Evans/Holiday Cerberus of underwhelming, overpaid play

I don't know how much you really care about basketball, as in do you actually watch things like team defense and positional play. But if you do, I feel you'll be very pleasantly surprised by just how great of a defender Asik is. You probably overpaid. I know I'm already thinking that this gives the Rockets a lot more ammunition for Kevin Love. But Asik is REALLY good if you care about basketball beyond points scored. He'll turn the Pelicans horrible defense into a possible top-10 defense next year. He is perhaps one of a select few players capable of challenging shots AND rebound at the same time. Kevin Love doesn't defend and just go for boards. Dwight Howard is a monster at rejecting everyone but gives up rebounds. Asik is a guy who's not as good in either department, but does both at the same time.

Asik is a guy who's not as good in either department, but does both at the same time. I would wager I am in the top 5 of minutes used watching basketball on TL. I understand Asik's value, but he is a big man with a valuable skill so he will for sure have to be overpaid to be kept. Period. You don't get good value deals on big men when free agency hits and everyone knows they're a good starter level player unless it's a player who can only get the max and is worth more than the max. He will not turn the Pelican's defense into a top 10 defense, or atleast we shouldn't assume he would. You have to realize the Pelican's defense is not just a lack of defensive talent and rim protection, but that Monty employs an aggressive ball pressure and fast switching system. Asik doesn't benefit for this, mostly because while he's a good rotating defender, he can't make up for the guards getting blown by when they cheat on steals or close out on open 3 point shooters when the team starts going for ill advised doubles. This is what causes Davis so many problems, despite everyone acknowledging he has the makings of a generational defensive player -- Davis can't do crap about open shooters and guys waltzing into the lane, no matter how great a defender he is. What will fix the pelicans defense is surer feet on the aggressive traps and presses and more cognizant closing out on swing passes to jump shooters -- as well as rim protection when the aggressive play leads to open drivers. Asik could very well provide an important defensive piece to the puzzle that is the Pelican's horrible performance, but he can't solve the problems that I know are still there. I could literally write an individual essay for each important pelicans players' defense and the system. Asik should certainly help, but top 10 defense? That is lofty expectations.
