From what I've read, he had to have failed what's probably close to a dozen tests to get this far, to the point where they were testing him daily. I don't think this punishment seems fair considering the circumstances that have been explained, but acting like Gordon just messed up a couple of times is a gross understatement.
A lifetime suspension for a third offense at this point would feel necessary for the stupidity of the whole thing. Chris Cooley (former Redskins TE until ~2 years ago, now DC radio guy and broadcaster during games) spent some time explaining the drug policy back when Fred Davis got hit with an "indefinite suspension" sometime back in February. It really isn't much of a anti-drug policy but more of an anti-idiot policy. I am a little fuzzy at this point on all the details, but I believe he said that all players should know when the tests are coming because they could only test at specific times of the year (for example, you know the initial test will occur sometime in June/July) and there were policies in place for how many times they could get tested if the original test came back clean (things were different if they picked something up). So if you could simply hold off on smoking for two specific months of the year and cleared the initial drug test, you could pretty much be high as a kite the rest of the season. Additionally he added that when someone gets tagged with one of these punishments, it isn't for just 1 failed test, but something like a minimum 4 or 5 consecutive failures over a period of weeks. Cooley basically summed it up with you either have to have a serious problem (and need some outside help) or you are complete idiot. Exactly. You have to flunk a whole slew of times to even get into the program and then even more to get a strike. It's ridiculous that he can't stay clean.

Alright, based on the analysis I'm hearing now (too many sources to cite), I doubt an injunction will be granted. I will likely drop him tomorrow.

justin blackmon is in the same situation too right?

If the ban is decided by an arbiter (which I think it was), then there's basically no chance of the decision being overturned. The standard to reverse an arbiter is too high. Consequently, it is highly unlikely that a preliminary injunction would be granted as well, because the party seeking the injunction (Gordon) would have to show that he's likely to succeed on the merits of his appeal (which he's not).

Maybe when he isn't making money he'll realize smoking weed isn't that important

I dont feel sorry for him, or the idiot in my league who spent his 6th round pick on him. yeah he is a retard. Rules are in place for a reason. Needs to learn to follow them if he wants to make $$$$$$$$ Agreed on following easy-to-follow rules in order to make millions, but lets not pretend like these rules exist for a reason. Many exist for no reason at all except to push some mystical image or satisfy corporate sponsors. These are professional athletes and are expected to keep themselves to a higher standard physically. If there were no rules in place, there would be plenty of people high on game day. I do not think that's what coaches, team owners or the fans want to see. If you can't give up marijuana for fame and millions of dollars you need some help. Not really that big of a sacrifice. I don't see any rules keeping players from drinking in their off-time, and yet players aren't showing up drunk on game day. Do you have any evidence that would suggest that should the league lift its universal ban on marijuana, players would be toking up before the game? I find that highly unlikely, and if it affected their play or work ethic you would bet they would hear about it from their coaches, and rightfully so. Agreed with it being silly they're not willing to give it up considering what's at stake, but it doesn't mean the rules aren't pants-on-head retarded. You make some good points. I do not think comparing alcohol with marijuana is fair though. Alcohol is a legal substance in all states, marijuana is not. Maybe one day when marijuana is federally legal across the country it may change. The NFL as an organization does not want to endorse an illegal substance. Especially with kids and families being a huge demographic that watches football. If they didn't enforce it, there would be many angry mothers knocking on the NFL's doorstep for "endorsing" marijuana. It's a PR move to punish Josh Gordon and a wise one. As many people have already stated the NFL is funded by sponsors. Money makes the world turn and that's how it's always going to be. Which brings me back to my original point that many NFL rules exist to push an image or satisfy corporate sponsors. Endorsing marijuana would be putting advertisements on television or changing the Redskins to the Washington Hashpipes. Not suspending players for using a substance that isn't performance enhancing doesn't qualify as an endorsement for me. It certainly is illegal in most parts of the country, and police all over the place are responsible for dealing with use and distribution of illegal substances. I fail to see why the NFL believes it should be responsible for policing it further, outside of them doing it to get at the teat of their corporate sponsors. Which is fine, but everyone wants to pretend it's moral high ground.
Yup, they're all idiots. Gordon as well as the NFL.
The NFL is a violent game. If you need a painkiller stronger than Tylenol, you're likely taking something that is chemically related to opium or morphine. Marijuana is the least of their problems. I'm guessing that NFL players have something in their body hurting 365 days a year that needs some painkiller of some sort. Legal prescription painkillers are generally worse than marijuana. And I'm sure Tylenol doesn't work for what ails these guys.

Yeah because I am sure that Gordon is using marijuana as a pain killer. Haha get real.

Why do people doubt Beast Mode (Lynch)? One of the few workhorse RBs left in the league.
I hope to pick him up in my draft tonight.

I hope to pick him up in my draft tonight. There's a trend of guys who have had a ton of carries compiled in previous seasons either being ineffective of injured after a certain period. The flags are up for Lynch. It's similar to baseball pitchers who throw a lot of innings, including the postseason (see Adam Wainwright this year).

For a guy who might be the starter? On board with Shonn Greene for that reason as well (13th round ADP).

Greene in the 12th round isn't awful, but I still wouldn't take him. He was really disappointing when given opportunites to start with the Jets.

Again, those are legal drugs. The NFL is not going to support it's players taking federally illegal substances the severity or strength of the drug does not matter. We are talking legality. And honestly who cares if its a bullshit rule. They are so many bullshit rules employers make you do but you do them. If he can't follow simple rules he's an idiot.
