Wolfsburg confirm signing of Luiz Gustavo from Bayern. £14m fee and he'll scoop £114k-a-week. Arsenal miss out.
If that's true, then I'm glad Arsenal didn't sign him. He's not worth breaking the wage structure for (Theo Walcott is the highest paid Arsenal player, at £100k p/w).

NextGen Series Cancelled for One SeasonFunding problems have forced organisers of the NextGen Series to suspend the competition for a year The continental tournament, which features Under-20 teams from across Europe, has helped a number of players progress to senior teams, including Celtic's Tony Watt and Gary Gardner from Aston Villa. Villa, Chelsea and Arsenal reached the semi-finals last season and it was the Villans who went on to claim the tournament in the finals, which were staged at Lake Como in Italy. But with no major sponsorship on board for the 2013-14 season, and with potential competition coming from a UEFA-organised competition in the future, organisers have been forced to place it on a one-year hiatus Source
Dammit, such a huge shame for the kids, a European based competition is defiantly what the youngsters need to help kick on faster development and keep the kids at the clubs for longer instead of leaving to go on loan. Hope UEFA get this started quickly if they are indeed to make their own version but having 1 year break in the competition is such a blow to the U21 squads around Europe.

What's with Champions League for reserve teams? Where clubs were supposed to be in the same groups as their senior squads.

UEFA will organise a new Under-19 club competition, the UEFA Youth League, for the 2013/14 season after the UEFA Executive Committee approved the name during its meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday.
The 32 clubs that qualify for the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage will also be given the opportunity to participate in the UEFA Youth League from next season. A 96-game group stage will take place between September and December 2013, with fixtures being played around or on the same dates as the UEFA Champions League at grounds in close proximity to the venues used for those matches, where logistics allow. The eight group winners and eight runners-up from the UEFA Youth League group stage will then participate in a knockout phase, played in single matches, from February 2014 onwards.
The trophy will be named after the UEFA honorary president Lennart Johansson. This format will remain for a second year before a review is held, which also ensures that the UEFA Youth League runs alongside the existing club competition cycle which ends after the 2014/15 campaign.

Oh right, thanks Ferrorse, that is ok then. I don't mind NextGen not being around if the UEFA version is around. Shame for teams like Villa though who have excellent academies
And a victim of the silly international friendly fixture during the start of the season;
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will be sidelined for around two weeks after aggravating a back injury while playing for Germany.

Yay for coaches playing slightly injured players in friendlies. Not. I didn't understand why Löw had to play him as he was injured in the first place and that is the stupid result. Meanwhile Schweinsteiger hasn't played like the last ~10 friendlies with ever so slight injuries.

Apparently Bale doesn't speak to Tottenham officials lol:
Villas-Boas was asked about Bale's mental state. "Nobody knows because the player doesn't speak," he said, referring to Bale's public silence and attempting to deflect the question. "The only thing that we are able to see or you are able to see is the player arriving in and out of the training ground." http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/aug/15/gareth-bale-tottenham-crystal-palace

The whole saga inflates his ego so much that he is destined for failure at Real.

No doubt Bale wants to go to Madrid, but he isn't some evil mastermind. Jonathan Barnett, on the other hand, IS an evil mastermind. This is the man who moved Ashley Cole from Arsenal to Chelsea. Unfortunately for him, Daniel Levy is bully-proof.

According to Polish sources, Villas-Boas stated that Bale is behind on his training schedule by six weeks, meaning he will miss three first Premier League games for Tottenham and European League clash vs Dinamo Tibilisi. The report states that instead of doing his job during the preseason, Bale is constantly seen coming to the training ground and leaving it after couple of hours, but spending all time negotiating something with executives in the offices instead of playing on the pitch. In view of that, does Real really want a player behaving as unprofessional as this guy?

I doubt there's a team with higher appeal than rm so I don't think he would pull the same stuff there. Unless he's rly unprofessional, meaning he would be like that for many reasons.

He's being unprofessional because he wants to go to Real Madrid. When he gets there, I'm sure he will be back to the training ground.
He'll still be unprofessional the next time the opportunity comes but if his wish comes true, he has no reason to stay this way. Especially because the whole football world would hate him.

In view of that, does Real really want a player behaving as unprofessional as this guy? Yes, he's out through the third game of the season. By pure coincidence, that means he'll return right after the transfer window closes.
Modric acted 100 times more unprofessionally than this (he outright refused to play or show up for training) and Madrid still wanted him, so that won't be an issue for them. The real issue is that they won't get Bale until their offer changes. This "world record fee" is being offered in several instalments, and Levy/Lewis are simply not interested. If they make an acceptable up-front offer, the deal will happen; otherwise, Bale will stay.
Another thing to clarify: Spurs' spending thus far has NOT been dependent on the sale of Bale, as some media outlets have suggested. Between the extra revenue from the new TV deal, the sales of Caulker + Dempsey + Huddlestone, and the rest of Modric money still owed by RM, all the signings are covered. Parker and Adebayor (huge earners) will likely be off as well, so there is enough money to shore up the defense before the end of the window. If Bale stays, there are no financial issues. Levy and Baldini have done extraordinarily well this summer. If Bale does leave, let's hope he's replaced by Willian and Lamela. Hey, a man can dream!

You have to skip training like Berbatov/Modric to leave Tottenham
