Go Flyers!! NHL has a decent thing online where you can watch almost every game. I bought it two years ago and I twas something like 100 140 bucks? Maybe they'll 'apologize' to fans by making it 30 bucks or something. Apparently it's 50 bucks for the remainder of the season. I'm looking at getting it but the blackout that makes you get a proxy is annoying as hell it seems, especially in Canada. Also lol@Gillis stocking up on bargain-basement D-men, I'd hope ours don't *all* get injured again. 50 bucks and blackouts? Sigh, why are they so awful at this. Its almost like the NHL wants to be a Canada and North-Eastern America game. We will finally get to see how 'smart' Gillis really is in his negotiation to sign Edler and move Luongo. If Edler signs under 5.5 and Luongo is moved for a center or a decent selection of picks then he's okay. Otherwise he is a hack. I was reading somewhere that he thought Edler would sign for 4.5 just like Bieksa and Hamhuis and that 3rd overrated guy. Made me laugh pretty pretty hard.

Watch out for Oilers this season guys, they are gonna come out of nowhere and destroy I think. No goalie, no D. So I dont think so. But at least the Canucks arent going to autowin the Northwest this year. M oh they still will dont you worry ur cute little ass It will definitely be a riot, I'll make sure not to choke when it happens and hold back my tears. And minnesota has a good shot, as well. They did amazingly the beginning of last year until injuries ripped them apart. Then, they added the huge duo in the offseason... They could be a great team. That D is still pretty weak outside of Suter. And honestly, I think that offense isn't gonna be as good as people think. I like Koivu and Parise. Outside of that though, they're a mix of slightly above average guys and some overrated players (Heater is on a big decline and Setoguci hasn't looked anything like that dude who killed it riding shotgun with Thornton a few years back). Also, I don't think doing well for part of the season says a ton. Reminder: The Leafs, of all fucking teams, looked halfway decent for a bit there, until they remembered that they are Leafs, have little depth up front, a horrid defense and no goaltending (Reimer could pan out though). Minny is definitely way better than them and I'd buy in on a team with goaltending, but I don't know if either are really playoff teams. Minny was out by 14 pts and the only teams in the West that I think got noticiably worse are Nashville, Detroit and Phoenix. That being said, what is interesting about the shortented season is that it provides no mercy for fuck ups. And shitty teams like the Leafs who go hot for a month, month and a half might suddenly make it to the playoffs before reverting to form. I think the Oil still have a subpar D and G situation, even after getting Fistric, but that offense is awesome. Are the Wild still playing a more 'open' game? If so then they are definitely not going anywhere. If they go back to defense, bore you to death style that got them a couple playoffs then I like their chances to do it. Backstrom isnt that great but in the right system he will get a .920 and Koivu and Parise are defensively responsible enough to play a two way game.Basically it will be like NJD but with a crappier goalie. But Heatley is just a waste of space right now, and with his brutal contract I could see them buy him out.

I honestly do not get to see a ton of Edler being on the east coast, but I would have to image a 26 year old defensemen who is pretty good all around and more or less a lock for 40pts or so would not go for any cheaper than 5.5 on the open market. I know the types of contracts we see will drastically change this offseason, but he will be the best defensemen available by far http://www.capgeek.com/free-agents/?year_id=2013&team_id=-1&position_id=D&fa_type_id=2
I do not know what style Minny plays. They do have Mike Yeo as coach now right??
I don't think Heater is a waste of space though. He's still an offensive threat and with a full year of Koivu and now Parise he could come back around. It's worth noting that he was on a good pace early on in the season but fell of a cliff when Koivu went down. Definitely not worth 7.5 a year anymore unless he gets back up to that ppg level, but he is also only signed on for this year and the next. If they have issues getting under or resigning players in the offseason, maybe they do the buyout.
|
At Cap Geek they are at 68 but with 2 guys going UFA next year. Doubt they'll miss Cullen at 4.5 million but Heatley just robs them of any flexibility and their starting goalie goes UFA next year too.. And while he is a decent (70 pts probably) guy he is so damn slow now. O well, the pressure is definitely on Minny and their superemely expensive players to step it up. I guess with a short season if they get out of the gate with a strong first 20 games they'll probably be in the playoffs.

All of the Vancouver dmen are signed for 4.6 or under, and our players have a history of taking less money to be here. Plus Edler wasn't that great last year compared to the one before so his leverage isn't as great as it could be I'd say.
Also wondering if anyone here located in Canada has an experience with Centre Ice. If not, I'll just stick to pirate streams since getting cable just for NHL is so not worth it.

|
Yeah when I looked at that, Cullen's contract made me actually say what the fuck out loud haha.
Edler's contract situation is not really the same other guys who took contracts recently.
Hamhuis was a UFA in 2010, and he signed up at 28 years old after posting 27, 26, and 24 points in the three seasons before. He had the rep as a shutdown guy. Bieksa reupped in 2011 at 30yo after going 43 and then down to 22 and 22, with him being the dog the fans kicked for a while. Garrison is 28 UFA who just signed this past year, and had 8, 18, and 33 before this.
So he's 2 years younger than any of these guys when he signed and is just at the start of his prime vs the middle/decline. Plus he is a better proven offensive threat than those other three guys, going 42, 33, and then 49 points, posting 11 goals to boot last season as well.
Take a look at the defensemen UFA posted earlier. He is far and away the best option as far as age and talent. If this were the old cba without a lockout looming, he'd get 6.5+ easy. He still probably gets 6m as long as he has a similar statistical season as this past one. Shit, Garrison essentially got his cotnract based on one year. Edler's done that for the past 3-4. Also, Hamuis was the only one who took significant less to stay because he was from BC.
I don't think he's a hack at all if he has to pay more than 5.5. They'd just have to make some moves with some of those role guys. People like Malholtra and Raymond can't get the salary they do under the new cap. He'd be a fuckin wizard if he got him for 4.5.

By dumb trades you mean the Kassian trade (which remains to be seen whether or not it was bad) and acquiring Ballard, who has largely been a bust because of injury problems? Meanwhile, he got a fantastic deal on Burrows, traded two minor league players for Ehrhoff, and got a bargain on the Sedins and Kesler.

Ballard has been a bust because Ballard isnt a top 4 defenseman, not because of injuries. He rode the pine just fine when he was healthy. The Burrows deal was not fantastic, it was a fair price for a 3rd line pest who gets pucks bounced of him into the net by the Sedins. All you had to do to to show him what happens to guys who play on the Sedin line and then dont was Carters career. A quick 3.5 million for a year and then done in hockey. And if he did take that option, Lapiere would have been up there in his role at half the price doing the same thing, letting the Sedins bounce goals of him.
The Sedin deal was good, no doubt about it.
But Kessler? 5 million is about right, he had one statistically lucky season when he scored a ton of goals but otherwise he is an oft injured two way center who will average out in his career 60-65 points per season if all his injuries heal. Bolland gets paid 3.75 for the same role and contributes 15-20 points less from the third line.

Ballard wasn't a top 4 defensemen, but he was definitely better than Rome. I don't know why that happened. But it wasn't injuries.
Those other deals are fine. Sedins are a good deal. Kess is too. Bolland isn't even close to him though. Burrows is maybe a tad high because I think he benefits a ton from sedins but whatever still fine.
Those are all signings though??
I still don't care for the Kassian trade. I think they gave up a lot more there for someone who hasnt given any indications that he'll be as good as he was projected

Burrows is a third line player? Are you kidding? Averaged 56 the past three years while not playing on the top powerplay unit and is one of their top penalty killers. He's been successful on the second line as well, and the Sedin's big breakout came shortly after he was placed on their line. He could easily have gotten 4 million on a number of other teams in the league instead of signing with Vancouver for 2.
Ballard was getting around 30 points a season before the trade. Afterwards, he was plagued with injuries and dropped to 8 points per season. Kesler had back to back 70 point seasons while being one of the best two way forwards in the league prior to his injury problems (and he was signed before the injuries). Jordan Staal has a career high of 50 points and is making 6 million.

Anson Carter got 3.5 million after a year on the Sedin line too after looking 'dominant'. I dont dispute that an idiot GM would have overpaid for him, but without his playmakers Burrows would sink down to his skill level as a 3rd line pest. When they go dark so does he. The Canucks penalty kill is called "Roberto Luongo" so even a defensive floater like Ovechkin could rack up respectable numbers playing in front of him.
Ballard was getting around 30 points a season before the trade. Afterwards, he was plagued with injuries and dropped to 8 points per season.
On Florida, against pathetic SE division teams. Bouwmeester was 'amazing' down there too.
Kesler had back to back 70 point seasons while being one of the best two way forwards in the league prior to his injury problems (and he was signed before the injuries). And prior to his breakout season he was a 50 pts, two way second line center. People get statistically outstanding years, just ask Jonathan Cheechoo
Jordan Staal has a career high of 50 points and is making 6 million. Yes, there are many stupid GMs in this league and pay for 'pedigree'
As for the Kassian trade... I don't like it either, but that and the Ballard trade don't make him a hack just because you ignore all the good things he's done. He forced Naslund to retire as a freaking Ranger and then set back and raked in the benefits of Sedins playing up to their draft position and Luongo. His draft picks are terrible just like his trading, which is why he is constantly buying 6th pairing defensemen because there is nothing in the system to plug in. He is also the only GM in the league to whine about playoff refs in the middle of a playoff series, an incredibly classless move. The guy is a hack. But if he gets Edler for 4.5 Ill take that back.

Kess hit 70 two times.. He also posted 59 in his breakout year, which is pretty high for a 2nd liner who draws a lot of the team's defensive responsibilites.
If this were a full season and he failed to break 50 again then I guess you can say it was an outlier, but a 60 and then 2 70 point years isn't pulling a Cheecho. The guy was in the conn smythe running before blowing out his labrum, took a bunch of shots for it and then waited for surgery and was not 100% the following season. He's also only missed a grand total of 7 games in the past five years, playing through a torn labrum in the process, so I am not sure why he is labeled as injury prone.

well you may not understand why Gomez sitting at home doing nothing is complete and total bullshit. fortunately, the NHLPA and the NHL do realize this even though you do not.

Prediction For 2013:
EITHER Crosby is going to have a big concussion this year that will take him out of competitive play for an extended period of time. OR Crosby plays like Lindros did from 2002 onward.

When he was in Florida he was a number one defenseman. But then it was Florida and they were awful.
