Long term wise, it was a good move for both sides. Short term wise, its terrible especially if they don't get the first round pick back (as a Vancouver fan i hope they dont xD)

can't miss Radio.
Jeremy Roenick on Prime Time Sports!

Ken Holland just said IK's been mulling over this move for a long while.

Of course he has. I used to love watching Bob do his thing, but I don't have time to listen to him atm.

Why wouldn't Lou have given up the 1st round pick in 2012 when they were picking 29th overall, was he expecting to win the cup this year or something so he could give up the 30th? Maybe Lou had an idea that Kovy was running to the KHL and hoping it would negate them giving up the 1st RD pick?

Kypreos is just flat out wrong again.
Mcown, Maclean, and Kypreos were talking about this during one of these "Prime Time Sports Round Table" things.
Kypreos was insistent that New Jersey gets the 1st round pick back. Maclean and Mcown were surprised to hear it.

Kypreos is just wrong. New Jersey loses their 1st round pick.

The entire episode of Prime Time Sports was totally botched.
McCown promised Declan Hill about soccer game fixing and also Roenick about the retirement. Neither guy ended up on the show.

I think it would be the later, or that they just really really liked matteau for some reason. Even if they did, you'd think that no matter what they thought of him, giving up 29 would be preferable to anything lower.

idk lou is hard to read. there's a reason he's so good at what he does haha

Bergeron got paid today - 8 years and $52M.

Good for him. That wraps him up for what should pretty much be the remainder of his career. It's hard to argue that he isn't one of the best all-around players in the league.

Yeah that is a fair deal for a very good player. Dude just excels everywhere on the ice. He's like what Drury was at his peak, but with much much more offensive skill.

e: shit i just looked at his draws. 62% this past year. holy shit.

leafs gave bozak his retarded deal for 52. the leafs would have gave bergeon 12m a year and a personal fluffer to follow him around on the road.

what's crazy about bergeron is that he might have been even better and peaked earlier if his brains didnt get mushed to shit a few years back

It takes a deal like Bergerons to really appreciate how fucking awful the Leafs front office is.

kovy is back with ska, as expected. reported salary is between 15-20m/yr, tax free. and all the endorsements he can handle in the motherland.

while i am sure life in the K as a low level player is still as sshitty as ever, the NHL better take notice that the K is now a viable alternative for talented russian players. it is no longer just for russians who are angry about their entry level deals and use it as leverage. if you can get $7+ in the NHL, you can get much much more in the KHL.

while i think kovy's contract situation forced jerseys hand into voiding and made his situation unique, youre gonna see this effect the drafting of russians, and in the type of contracts russian ufas get.

Fuck Bonnie.
Fuck Carl.
Fuck Brett.
"had his parents left him alone who knows what kind of hockey player he could've become", Bobby Clarke.

Fuck the whole fucking Lindros family.

And above all, Fuck Eric Lindros.

The Greyhounds and Nordiques have not forgotten. And neither has the HHoF selection committee.

Great move by the HHoF guys to refuse Eric Lindros entry.

The implication perhaps that Russians are already drafted with a degree of apprehension. There's the common draft trope of the highly skilled Russian who drops because teams are afraid of a commitment (e.g. Nichuskin, Grigorenko, Cherepanov, etc.). Or for UFAs, Zherdev was a good example. He was very skilled and the advanced metrics were favorable to him, but teams just wouldn't touch him. In some ways its just old stereotypes about not working hard and not coming to NA, but there have been some clear cases of high-level Russians not fitting in. Yashin, Malkin, Kovalev, Bure, Bryzgalov, Nabokov, Zherdev, and now Kovalchuk are some recent examples of guys who get that "enigmatic Russian" label, whether deserved or not. Mostly I think it's xenophobic old coots who are used to the USSR, and can only accept tight-lipped Canadian grinders.

in the old stereotype the USSR-style Russian was tight-lipped as well.

Who labelled Bure an "enigmatic Russian" , Don Cherry?
Quinn and by extension any one under his circle of power accepted Bure as a phenomenal talent and a playoff warrior.

You can claim any one has been "inappropriately labelled".

oh yeah that's gone on since they started coming over in the 90s, before there was real monetary incentive to stay in the east. Prior to this, there was some, but it was only really for unestablished but high potential guys. The kovy situation is just really gonna amplify existing stereotypes and concerns, but it also creates new issues.

basically, that this coup does a bit to make the K more of a real threat to established eastern talent rather than a place for disgruntled young kids on ELC, or guys like Jags looking for retirement paydays. like teams that have an upcoming russian ufa are gonna really gun to resign him before letting him get to UFA so they can hold that over his head since the leagues are supposed to honor contracts. And this cap recapture stuff for over 30 players that made the Kovy contract toxic and forced Lou's hand in voiding it is gonna make it so that older russian ufas do not get any kind of contract that would give them leverage if they wanted to bolt.

the k is still a place where scrubs like marcel hosa can get paid, but this is still a big win for them
