Arsenal are playing splendidly offensively this afternoon. Really looking like they have an edge today and not just creating lots of half-chances that so often seems to be the case. Sunderland is usually very sound defensively, too. Lots to be happy about today. Glad to see both Sagna and Calle Jenka on the pitch as well : )

I've been watching keepers a lot more closely recently, and I've seen way too many 5-hole goals on keepers, in all leagues. These goals usually happen because the keeper's legs are completely sprawled as he has no idea where the ball is going. What I don't get is this; if a professional hockey goalie can properly react to a puck going to the 5-hole (even if he doesn't actually stop it), why is it that professional keeper's can't do it as well? A puck travels much faster and is much harder to follow than a soccer ball is. Is it a difference in technique that makes it impractical to properly protect 5-hole shots? Just a lack of focus in training? Trying to figure out what you mean by 5 hole Im guessing you mean the star shape goalies usually make in 1v1s or so I haven't seen much hockey but in football the goal is to make yourself as big as possible and equally as prepared for a nutmeg as a chip over you to them running round you to them passing across goal that and the fact that any contact is about 80% a red card

The 5 holes are (For a right-handed hockey player) below your right arm (1), below your left arm (2), above your left arm (3), above your right arm (4), and between your legs (5). You can also think of the area between the right arm and the body (6), and the left arm and the body (7). Any goal made through 5-7 is generally looked on as a goalie fuck-up (the hardest area for a goalie to block is his stick side, high or low, and glove saves are very difficult). Very well-defined on Wikipedia actually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-hole To clarify my point, I can understand that it is significantly more difficult if you are facing a shot from the middle of the pitch (since you have to deal with a very large area to either side), but I almost always see this when it is a shot from the side and the angle is very narrow. The striker is, in all probability going to have to go through the keeper in some way as opposed to shooting at an angle that is out of his reach, and this is where you see a lot of shots go between keeper's legs or just under their arms as they dive.

Also, Wenger probably wants him to have some more minutes. Furthermore, Podolski played a friendly during the week, no? As I'm writing this, Jenkinson is sent off : (

In a hockey goal you are prepared to only move your hands and legs in football you have to be prepared to jump and stuff. But the problem is that this goal is made when the angle is the most narrow (far to either side) and so the keeper, if properly positioned, will be relying mostly on reflexes to stop the ball. It is much larger (and easier to follow) and travels much, much more slowly than a puck does, so shouldn't keepers be able to make an improvement on saving between-the-legs shots? Respectable goalies are able to properly react and at least know where a puck is going and attempt a save in the right direction, whereas most keepers just throw their bodies/feet out their when they get a shot from a narrow angle like that, and it usually leaves their legs wide open and lets the ball through.
