In college sports, each school has a set number of scholarships they can give out to recruit talented high school players to play for them and in exchange the player gets a degree. In professional leagues, we don't have the aspects of promotion and relegation, so you just have one league with the same 30 or so teams every year. After the season they have an entry draft for rookies.
Each sport has different requirements for entry to the draft, but IIRC the MLS requires that you have to graduate college. The MLS also has a thing called "generation Adidas" where extremely gifted high school or college players can become professionals immediately and enter the draft without graduating school. The players are also compensated with a college degree if their pro career doesn't pan out.
There is a champions league for North America, but it isn't publicized very well because the American teams always get destroyed by the teams from Mexico

Or is there? I'm not that into MLS myself All i know is you used a retarded league/play off system I guess the most talented players if there was any would need to be scouted by the European clubs for them to get out and make the big $$s but im sure that would happen if they were that good. But i know the 3 big sports you just mentioned are pretty much stuffed into your face if your good at sports, and no one really mentions any other sport! Is there a champions league based cup competition for your federation btw? Ie CONCAF (your federation) should have a champions league competition set up? With the other countries that are involved in your world cup qualifying groups. Is there one, because that is another way to get the teams more "air" time as you will and more scouts looking at them. Specially with the world club championships now every year with the winners from each federation sent over to "x" country to play in a tournament to find out the world best team.
Yeah the best players usually don't play college in the US, they go through the academy system and such, it's just not very extensive or prominent at all, and almost all the national team level promising talent looks to go to Europe ASAP. And a lot of the MLS players that people do see as national team prospects honestly looks really bad to me, like Brek Shea (his play is so brutish and clumsy) and Kyle Beckerman. Zusi is the only one that looks sort of promising to me. It's become pretty clear to people that the route to getting on the US national team is playing in Europe, so that's what's happening.
There is a concacaf champions league that's trying to get attention but not many people do pay attention to it (not even many soccer fans, and 0 general public non-soccer followers), especially because usually the Mexican teams take it, since it became branded as champions league in like 08 there's been one MLS finalist, but otherwise all Mexican first and seconds. I watch it as a progress check to see how MLS is doing against more legit competition though.

It's kind of scary that countries like Jamaica are utilizing the MLS to develop their players a lot better than America. But that being said, this is a friendly in Russia, especially if you're looking for a player who is currently in the MLS playoffs, the trip is just horribly timed and horribly placed for them.
Also, for the person trying to find out why USA hasn't been utilizing Jozy, he's viewed as rather lazy when he has the US shirt on. Further, he hasn't really scored goals (been almost a year since his last US goal, I think). However, if you look at his goals/game, he's still up there with the Brian McBrides and Eric Wynaldas as far as international play goes.
Edit: We might also need the MLS to develop a promising CB. Bocanegra is getting quite old, I can almost see a triumvirate of Goodson, Edu, and Cameron being rotated, but one of them rarely plays for Stoke and the other starts at RB for Stoke. And I'm still not quite sure what to think about Goodson.

Haha, yeah i just checked the links thanks.
Yeah so it is being improved slowly the infrastructure. Maybe needs to be more "Generation Adidas" sort of drafting if College's will probably prioritise the other big 3 sports before Football. We should check back on this conversation in 2-3 years see if it is improving.

Also, apparently reserve teams in the MLS only play a few games a year and being loaned out to the lower leagues of the American system is quite difficult so young players in the MLS get very little chance to get playing time. If the USSF could fix that, it would probably be a positive for young player growth in the MLS.

Ah yeah excellent point. All teams should have a youth/reserve team so the Addidas Grad thing will be used alot more so more kids get a chance!

Ah I forgot Agudelo, the only MLS player in this game with a great holdup there. I'm not sure how he's gonna turn out long term though.

What ever happend to Freddy Adu? Wasn't this guy set to be the best thing since slice bread? >.<

The US really need to shore up their defense. But I'll take a 2-2 comeback draw against Russia >___>

In fact it always seems like when US is in possession I'm just as afraid if not more of the other team breaking on them than of us creating something.

What are they gonna do when Tim Howard retires though? Isn't he 33?

He's just like an ordinary player in the MLS now, barely gets called for national team, he went to Benfica for a while but was mostly loaned out while there and didn't really do anything. Monumental disappointment. Turns out the real upcoming star was Michael Bradley. Is he doing well at Roma? I haven't heard much.

MLS and College level football compared to more popular american sports is actually atrocious. Its painful to try and watch the games.
Which is strange because I coach here for a middle school on the weekend and a couple of evenings a week. now and the standards for the technical training at that level are pretty good. We got trained by people from Spain and Italy, generally it was very impressive.
(and O man the running. I dont get why being trained as a coach involves so much fucking running. But w/e)
The problem is alot of coaches here sometimes totally ignore technical ability for the big kid that can move about well (and it works but just at that level). Thats changing alot now though which is nice to see.
Try watching a Red Bulls game and see Henry just walk around the park and turn it on for about 5 mins at a time like a boss while everyone else is trying to win at clumsy. They are pretty athletic and big but as far as technical quality is concerned its quite embarrassing to watch at times. Theres a few decent players around but generally its frustrating to watch at best.
They've had a bunch of quality keepers the last decade though.

These internationals are so pointless. And I see Fergie is, once again, getting away with faking injury for his players.
