Essentially I have a hyperactive thyroid that releases way too much T3 and T4 hormones (controls how quickly my body uses up energy), so I have an insane metabolism that's ~4 times the normal. Been eating an over 4000 cal protein-heavy diet daily, yet I'm still losing muscle mass and body fat by the minute. The downside is of course less bulk, especially evident on my biceps and pecs, but the upside is that I have so much definition that I now have an 8-pack for the first time in my life. Goal here is to eat 5000+ cal daily, and maintain my current weight of 65kg at 173cm. Doctor has advised me not to workout, run or play sports, basically anything that would strain my muscles too much and get my heart rate too high are forbidden. Walking and light yoga are my only sources of exercise for now, I just hope I don't lose all my muscle mass by the end of the year
ask eshlow about this. He probably has some good suggestions.

Put up a 360-lbs (PR) squat last night, which is the first time I've done 2x bodyweight. Slightly suspicious of how easy it felt, because I'm currently travelling on business, and have never lifted in this gym before. Possible for plates to vary by significant amounts from brand to brand?

If you can bench 5x5@ 86kg I think your 1rm will probably already be 100. I've just come back from the gym and did 3x5 @ 87.5kg and found it hard, and the most I've done for 1 rep before is 102.5kg.
EDIT: Oh sorry do you mean as a 5rm?

Plates vary a small amount. Normally it's percentage, so when they buy them it'll say it's (for example) within 0.2%. Sometime they say +/- 5g or something. That's partly why competition plates can go so expensive to be so accurate. So they vary but not by much, certainly not anything noticeable.
What is more likely is that the bar weighed a different amount. They don't all weight 20kg. In my gym the bar I normally use weighs 21kg, but I've been to a gym where the bar weighed in at 15kg. It could be a combo of yours at home being heavy and the one you used being light, if I'm using an unfamiliar bar I always jump on the scales with it and subtract my weight.

Yup, the bar is the more likely explanation. The 15kg bars are usually pretty easy to recognize from the get go, they'll be "thinner" than your standard 20kg bar or they'll have some odd feature that distinguishes them from a normal bar (plastic sleeves instead of metal). The ones that mess you up are the ones that are a few kilograms less, or a few kilograms extra, since there's really no way to tell.
Could just be that you just happened to get that "magical lifting day", when you just crush the weight inexplicably, while traveling, but I'd probably redo the 360lbs in your regular gym next week, just to be sure.

Ahhh, didn't even consider scrutinizing the bar. That's a very good point. Welp, I'll just have to smash the 360 squat next week once I get home!

The Squat Nemesis Workout - Work up to a max single (that is, a miss) - Drop 30% off the bar and work up slowly to a heavy 3 reps (not a miss, just heavy). Don’t take more than 5 to 10k jumps! You WANT the volume in that mid-range. - Drop to something lightish and do 2 sets of 5 reps. Your only goal is speed out of the hole. These should be rather light for you, like 40% to 65% of max. FAST!

Day 5 in a row...Nervous system definitely starting to say "fuck you decaf"
Front squat up to 365 (this would have been a PR like two weeks ago and it was np today) then 3x 275 295 315. I always forget the light sets of 2x5 on FS T_T Snatch up to 225 back down to 135 then back up to 255. missed 265 like 5 times, my body just wasn't having any of my nonsense. CJ - started off real light cause i just wanted to do form real quick before i left. ended up hitting 295 and missing 315.
Tomorrow is a rest day! Just kidding, its a rugby tournament! My body can't wait for sunday to recover a bit before hitting it hard again next week.

Today I had the opportunity to train with a friend of mine. We played around with kneeling jumps, Deadlift and and weighted standing ab wheel.
My Deadlift is atrocious these days. I wanted to max rep 455lbs but stopped at 4 reps because I knew I didn't have a PR in me...
For the kneeling jumps, we both did some singles at 135lbs. We worked up to a triple with 45lbs for the standing ab wheel, though they weren't clean reps...
Here's some videos!

Did some upper body stuff today; I haven't benched in almost 4 months now because of my shoulder... Only managed 2 reps paused (2 sec) at 135 pounds, and barely finished a 3x5 with touch and go. That means I've lost almost 50 pounds on my bench since I had to stop doing it at the end of February. (maxed at 185 3x3 at that time, paused, with a fat bar.)
Haven't lost any size to my chest (as if I had any to start with) and I've gained quite a bit of shoulder and tricep strength, because every time I would have had "bench" in my routine for these four months, I've done Incline DB Bench, OHP, or Push Press instead. So my close grip bench is almost as strong (did 115 for 8 today) as my regular bench. Damn injuries - hope I gave it enough time to heal, and that I can ease back into it, staying light and going 1x/week.

i NEED to start training seriously again. fuck.
also funkie, your squat shits on mine atm. congrats
|
1) is the ab wheel really good (for abs)? or would you definately recommend doing a variety of ab exercises? 2) do you think itd be okay to use on varnished floorboards? (ie wouldnt damage the floor) i could always do it over a towel i guess. which would be a great way to add resistance :/ (not that im gonna get an ab wheel atm , my broken ribs mean im fucked in that area for now afaik. can barely get off the bench press after laying down)
phyre, dont make too many conclusions after just 1 workout - it takes 2-3 to "warm yourself back up" in an exercise.
oh yeah i kinda wanted some opinions on this, maybe you read something..
have you ever thought it might be better to train for endurance and then train for strength alternatively? something like: week 1 - bench 60kg 3x8 week 2 - bench 62kg 3x5 week 3 - bench 62kg 3x8 week 4 - bench 65kg 3x5 week 5 - bench 65kg 3x8....
okay my back pain was pretty bad last night,
i have also been "suffering" from continuously waking up with numb hands (ie ...numb as in numb) for a long time, idk when it started exactly tho... ive tried to be aware of how ive been sleeping when it happens as i thought maybe im lying on my hands, but it still happens when im lying directly on my back with my hand out to the sides ie in no contact with anything.
so i just googled "slipped disc numb hands" and the websites DO say that you can get numbness in your hands and NOT just your legs like i previously thought
