Did my first track session with spike shoes yesterday. Gawd, it feels so much different from running in racing flats and somehow i managed to do everything on forefoot which i cant do in racing flats. I know that spikes dont have heel drop and its easier but even in my 210gr. Lunaracers or Mizuno Ronins i am stuck with a slight heel to midfoot strike.

But my calves seem to be in good shape, i dont even have the slightest soreness in them.

The sore calves I can bare with, at least I can ignore them while sitting down, but the blisters on the foot are felt even then! I need to put my feet up, still I don't regret it, but can anyone give tips on how to strengthen the skin or make it recover faster?

Wow.

AK leaves G. Mutai off...

I can understand why they might have but I'm still pretty surprised. Looks like the team will be: Wilson Kipsang, Peter Kirui, and Moses Mosop.

Mosop and Kirui are Canova athletes and at 2:03 flat level according to him. Additionally Kirui is a very good runner without pacemaker.

Does anyone know if there is a way to track your mileage when not on the track? My goal for the upcoming summer is 5 miles under 40~45 mins. But i honestly HATE running on tracks but they are the only way i know how to keep track of miles ran but i don't want to run 20 laps in a row i would probably die of boredom.

Canova is a boss. Seriously how many other coaches just answer user questions, throw out all their elite training plans and discuss their approaches on message boards? Oh yea...zero.

Yea, I'm not suprised Kirui was picked. Double WC Gold means you can run great when it counts in races without pacemakers.

I'm just surprised Mosop was picked over Mutai. Not only did Mutai beat him in Boston, Mutai's performance in NY was FAR superior to that of Mosop. Moreover, Mosop doesn't have the established racing pedigree that Mutai has, nor does he have recent success in XC like Mosop does (which could be relevant on a twisty, turny London course).

Based on last year there is no reason at all to pick Mosop over Mutai. Mutai was faster in Boston and his NY run was massively superior to Mosop's Chicago run. Which tells me the decision was either heavily based off politics AND/OR spring results. Mosop ran a decent time in Rotterdam (fast course, but medicore weather) but it obviously wan't that exception as he was third. Mutai DNFed due to heat, which was something he hadn't faced before and would probably be better prepared for in the future. He was absolutely cruising until he started suffering those cramps around 30km. The fact that Mutai only raced 30km essentially made that race a long training run which means he could be much more rested and prepared for London as well.

Not that Mosop isn't a great runner, I'm just not sold on the picking Mosop over Mutai thing.

Holy shit that was terrifying.

Checked radar before going out for a night run after work, looked like the storm was diminishing and moving away. Got out about 4 miles and was like "hmm, there is ALOT of lightning, and the rain is picking up...I better turn around." Within a mile or so I was getting buffeted by 40+ mph winds, mild hail, and some seriously driving rain. The real fun began about half a mile later when the lightning started in full force. I was fairly panicked and heading full steam for the nearest shelter (mile and a half to go). In those 8 or 9 minutes I had at least 4 strikes within a couple hundred yards of me, and one that struck a tree no less than 60 or so feet of to my right. It was almost like a movie with me dodging lightning bolts from Zeus (I promise you it is NOT exciting like in the movies).

When I got to the shelter and counted for two minutes there were well over 100 strikes.

All I can say is: harrowing.

Where do you live in the states? Area 51? :D

Some background stuff about the Kenya Olympic Team and London Marathon by Canova:

"Abel suffered of stomach problems during the last two weeks of preparation. This happened occasionally other times during the last 5 months, but his solution always was to take some traditional medicine able to cancel the pain, but not to solve the problem.
I spoke in London with Claudio Berardelli, coach of Prisca Jeptoo among others, that told me many athletes and himself had the same problems, and they went to an Italian Doctor in Nairobi Hospital, very good specialist of internal medicine, able to do advanced investigation, who found for everybody a bacterium called helicopbacterium. This bacterium not only provokes some pain, but reduces the food absorbtion ability. For a marathon runner, this means less fuel at disposal of the athlete, and for that reason Abel almost jogged the last two kilometers."

and what is even more interesting:

"However, the appointed Kenyan responsible coach for Marathon in Olympics, David Letting, had the opportunity (and also the precise task from AK) to follow the most important workouts of all the 6 men and women selected, from the beginning of January, and could see with his eyes the level of preparation of Abel, in not less than 5 workouts (one of them, 40 km in 2:04:54 !)."

"I think Wilson, Abel and Moses can have the same chance to win. It depends on the preparation, and on the weather of the day.
What I can say is that :

1. Wilson suffers hot weather a little bit more than Abel (that is good in humid conditions, too) and Moses (good with dry hot, not so good with humidity)

2. Wilson is the one having more balance as person. He is very thoughtful, and I suppose doesn't suffer any particular pressure (the day before the race in London he went for shopping with his wife...)

3. Abel is the more enthusiastic, living moments of great excitment also in training. This can be a very good chance if we are able to guide this characteristic in the right channel, but can also be dangerous if the enthusiasm pushes him to exceed during his training. But he's stronger than what people think.

4. Moses is the most talented under the side of endurance (also mental) and speed, but never had great continuity in his training at top level, due to some physical problem he had in the past. Moses, more than Wilson and Abel, is inclined to do very hard training when completely fit and motivated, and is inclined to escape from real training when disturbed for some problem. But now he is fully motivated..."

I'm running my first 10k race the day after tomorrow. (actually 10.2 k for some stupid reason).

My PR is 57'15". I'll try to run at least < 54'; that was the goal I set last year.

I ran 2.5k on a 52'30" pace yesterday and didn't seem to have much trouble, but that was on a track with a few thousand less people around.

This thread got me inspired to start running. I am on the third week of the Couch to 5k and can honostly say that this program moves at a good pace to set you up to start running longer distances in the future.

Woohoo 49'30. Shattered my last PR. Could have ran 30" faster I think, My first mile was quite slow because there were so many people I had to pass.

Also I should have eaten less before. You'd think that 1 big plate of spaghetti 4 hours before the competition would have been fine.

Sweet stuff. Obliterated your PR by miles and smashed your goal as well!

Time for sub 45 now!

Gogo you can take off another 5 minutes off your PR till fall, just keep on training easy on easy days and hard on hard days!

8 hours left until i run my first 1500m ever. Have a little bit respect because its middle distance but at least the pain lasts only a few minutes and not for 2 miles like in 5k's.

My last workout was Saturday, 9x200m in 33-35seconds, 200m jog rest with stronger headwind and trainers. Not blazin fast but sub 4:50 should be in range.

Had my warrior run this weekend; finished in 42:03, for a 5k. In highschool (three years back) I ran a 5k in ~19:00.

Considering this is the first time in three years that I've run more than 400m without stopping, that the course was on a skii mountain, through six inches of mud and it was an obstacle course, I'll take that. I do plan to get back to running as soon as I get home, in a week and a half. I'll be taking it easy, at least to start - three days running a week, likely, as I'm already lifting on four days. One day distance (~5k to start) one day sprints (100m repeats until I can't anymore - works well for rugby conditioning) and one day variable, for whatever I feel a need to work on. Hills, to start. There are a few races in the fall that I'm signing up for that aren't quite so difficult a course - will keep progress updated here!
