Thanks, although I normally don't trust youtube videos that much... Do you know if its necessary to go down so low? In the elitefts video they went to a little more than halfway down...

I lifted weights casually but never really got too into it, so now I am going to start the SS program. I have about two months before I run the physical test again, I plan on beating my old time by a lot even though i have been lazy for the past 6-8 months. (Fiancée had my son and it has been crazy.) If anyone has any advice for progressing faster in running and lifting it would be appreciated! :D

My best advice would be to imagine a scale with fast, low-rest interval training on one hand (short) and long cardio runs (long) on the other and correspond how much you do of each with how far you want to be running. Running really does break down to practicing sprinting by sprinting and distance with distance. Just remember to use good form!

@Catch: Good that you feel your hams and glutes with the new stance. In the vid you can, hopefully, see that I prefer a quite narrow stance/girp. + Show Spoiler [vid] + Work has been killing me and lack of sleep is showing. Decided just to do the main excercises and skip the accessories if they went well. Front Squats: finished with 105kg x 3. Sloppy form though A quite jacked dude next to me was working up to a squat max and first did a shallow, unstable, 180kg raw lift. Then he loaded up 200kg, went ATG with it, and got a nosebleed as a reward. After my shitty 150kg x 2 warmup I knew I was going to get my workset done. Deadlift: 185kg x 5. - A nice PR. The last rep was a loooooong grinder but happy as hell I got it ![]() edit: @Dudeman: Squats are so superior that no discussion is needed.

I think it will just be interesting to see what his Pat Mendes guy is gonna do at the 2012 olympics. He is basically his only top athlete and to be frank, whenever I found out about some weightlifting contest in the US (mostly through this thread), he had some kind of injury or just didn't participate. His training videos are awe-inspiring, but until now it's just training and never a big stage. mendes will be lifting at nationals. I read that it is a must qualifier for world weightlifting championships. Im not sure if america will have any slots for the olympics. I think someone has to score points at the next world champs for that to happen lol. A funny thing happened the last olympics. The american who won the olympic spots for team usa got left off the olympic team. I agree squats are awesome! leg press is a waste of time.

I don't know if that's you in the video, but please do be careful when deadlifting. You don't want to be hitching the weight. Just keep in mind that good technique will always move the bar better than force :-p.

This is interesting. Basically Mr. Charniga does not like presses or push press for training the jerk. Decaf, what does his workout program look like? I have read some other stuff of his and he definitely does not like partial movements like high pulls and stuff like that.

Just keep in mind that good technique will always move the bar better than force :-p. Good technique is a subjective term when you're deadlifting - what was it sjarl? 210kg? 220? He knows how to deadlift properly, but when you're approaching your max, it's hard to keep good technique, even when you're a good deadlifter. Made it to the gym today. 90 degrees F outside, but I had a cold shower afterwards, and it's cooled down now so I feel great. Bench 125 4x5 (+10 lbs) Squat 135 3x5 (no increase, worked on depth and form) Deadlift 200 2x5 (+15 lbs) Chinups 5-5-3-2 (wanted to hit 15 total; couldn't do it in 3 sets =/) Then did my planks, jumped rope for a bit (nearly killed me after both squats AND deads) and got out. Picked up two dozen eggs and a gallon of milk, should be enough to last until we go shopping for real on friday =x. Looking into getting protein powder and creatine while I'm home, because I certainly don't eat enough while I'm here. Where do you guys get these from? any brands you would recommend over others? I don't care about taste, I want the lowest amount of added sugar/flavorings/frills and the best protein for the price. I can drink just about anything.

@Dudeman: Squats>Leg presses in most cases. Unless you are extremely tall (I'm going with 6'4 or more but I really don't know) and the leverage will either be bad mechanically or for your form and risks injury, then I say substitute leg presses. There is a guy on another forum I visit who does this and has fine results but he is def. not the norm @Eshlow. I hate to bother you, but do you still have that study on why dietary fat isn't bad for you? My friend is saying cheese sucks, and I say to hell with that, it ain't that bad.

Rosa and I are both 6'3, and we squat fine. Decaf is almost that height, and he's a baller. The football and basketball teams at my university are made up of guys that make me feel small, and all of them squat - though I will note that they're carefully monitored by trainers and coaches, have very specifically planned routines, and are in great physical condition already, as they are working out/practicing for their respective teams year round. Still, I think you're going to need to be a bit bigger than 6'4 even for it to interfere with squatting.
