Does this mean all the models and rulesets from before are useless now? Or did they just rename everything but change nothing else.

Yes and no. The Old World still exists as history, now known as The World That Was. Most of the big characters from Warhammer Fantasy are now Gods and legends. The End Times were just that - Chaos won (because fucking Mannfred), The Old World blew up, and then coalesced into realms of magic, while those legends were reborn with a new purpose.
A lot of things are still the same - Dwarves are grumpy and love digging and gold. Elves are selfish dicks. Chaos wants to screw everything over. But now the setting is insanely massive and we've already been through a few time jumps, seeing cities and nations rise in the wake of Sigmar's victory, while the recent story destroyed many alliances and bastions as Nagash exerted his power over death in a huge, Realm spanning spell known as the Necroquake. It's been really interesting to follow imo.

They actually rewrote their entire lore? That's pretty funny

Eh, that's the really cynical way to think about it. I'm sure copyright played a large part in the decision making process, but they treat the lore quite well and the new factions and races seem quite interesting. It also gave them more creative freedom to try new things. The Old World was pretty set in stone, so suddenly creating a new army with their own aesthetic and background would have felt out of place or in some places, impossible.
It's just a big shift from traditional, familiar fantasy to super "drawn on the side of a van" high-fantasy.

I can totally believe that the game is way better. I played Warhammer fantasy for years. I flew cross country just to go to tournaments. It can be fun but its not really a good game, it's gamey and random and playing it well often requires you to be a super douchey rules lawyer and purposefully do shit that you know is unintended or that flies in the face of the lore of whatever you're playing.
Also it's expensive as ungodly fuck.
But for me I really like the lore and stories, even though they're just "hey guys, how can we rip off every single thing we can think of". They're fun in a goofy innocent sort of way.
I watched a review where somebody said the entire point of age of Sigmar was getting the universe to a point where they could reasonably change the names of the races so that they could get more control of their copyright and wouldn't have to put up with third party figure manufacturers making generic elves and them showing up in armies without it being a copyright violation. That's really what it seemed like to me.
I'm sure the game is better though. I'd totes be down to play it some day. But I'm also glad that they're keeping the original alive through all the PC games.

I like it a lot, tbh. Is it wacky and loose and a bit odd? Yeah, but it's cool seeing a brand new Fantasy setting without just being "Lord of the Rings, but with a twist". The recent narrative developments have been really good too, if you're bored and want to read some of the short stories leading up to the new Death army that's coming out, you can find a bunch here:

While there aren't as many named Heroes or nations to follow, the factions and Gods I think make a fairly interesting backdrop that you fill in with your own narrative and army. I've already started naming some of my Stormcast models :D
Edit: also the game itself is really good, so that helps a lot.

I just read the Age of Sigmar lore.
It's... Dumb.
Maybe not as dumb as end times?
But pretty dumb.

It's a completely different game, so there's new rules for everything.
That said, the base rules for the game are free, rules-wise you only have to invest for Battletomes (Army Books) and the advanced rules (called The General's Handbook, updated once per year). You can find them on the website or on the free app.
