Then like a month later I'm playing another normal and Neo is feeding as support Fizz LOL I like how your story leaves out that I locked in Fizz first but some other guy also picks mid and I decide to play nice and go support instead. I wouldn't pick support Fizz willingly, thanks. <3
But on-topic, I usually don't play normals to tryhard. That doesn't mean I'm not trying to win, because I absolutely am, but I see it as a way to enjoy the game without the stress of being punished for not playing at my peak, and my normals MMR being lower than my ranked MMR reflects that pretty well, I feel.

Normals are boring, there is no reason for me to compete anymore since I generally stomp every game (last season Dia II), and if I don't I just feel like leaving because its depressing losing vs players that are worse then you 9/10 times. I play normals with friends because solo normals are generally used to improve, and teams which consist of plat -> master elo are generally who gets the higher ranks who wins, you don't really improve with that. I always randomly pick off meta champs like Xin mid or Fizz top, stuff that can work but aren't top tier, I still play to win but I don't pick the most op champs there are. I also trashtalk a fuck ton in normals, act fairly toxic to my opponents, otherwise losing or winning carries no weight and I have even less reason to try, trashtalking keeps the fun in normals for me. Its a shitty attitude I know, and I do try and not go too far (just stuff like: are you lagging? or XDDD when they misplay). I'm a cunt but its the only way normals are interesting, plus its probably satisfying if they beat me while I'm trashtalking all game.
Normal games have individual mmr and I think its related to your ranked mmr, Faker actually had so high normal mmr before playing ranked that he switched to ranked because he couldn't find normal games anymore.

normals are of course mostly for social purposes, but in game its a nice place to try new champs, and especially put myself in positions where i'm overextended or try risky plays to improve myself as a player. get an opportunity to better understand the limitations of the champ i'm playing without the stress/risk of losing much

The only time I play Normals is when Its more than two of my friends who want to play.

S3/S4 D1 here, I approach normals now the way I used to play bot games. Some players can be pretty good, but the overall atmosphere is super casual and no one seems to care about the outcome too much. Good environment for testing out new ideas, or for relaxing with friends.

generally speaking the people who percive normals as a clown shoes zone have a corresponding mmr, up until players they can't outplay with garbage.
This is kind of true. Its also true that more high level players play normals less and ranked more and this has the converse effect that you're more likely to find higher ranked players in low MMR normals game than you would be otherwise.
So basically normals is high variance. I am plat 3 ish support main. I don't like supporting in normals because my AD's almost invariably suck and because it will drive my normal MMR above my other roles
Generally its better to just ignore rankings and play, and not worry about it because its normals.

hilariously, alot of gold/plat'ish normals players take it very seriously and in my experience almost never condone experimentation. Regular sticks in the mud

Never really understood the ranked fetish, personally. It's supposed to be the premier game mode, but it's missing half the options you have with normals. Most gallingly, ranked dictates which and how many friends you can play with. As long as you don't care about the dick-waving contest, normals are just superior in every way.
Not to mention the crazy tilt that hits a lot of people when even the slightest thing goes wrong in ranked. I've had so many bad experiences with friends--many of whom I've known for years--becoming completely different people when LP are on the line that I will now refuse to duo with them. In ranked. They're still wonderful people in normals. Go figure.

I almost only play normals and a lot of teambuilder to learn and practice new champions. I've been playing with Shaco a lot and loving it.
The issue I have with norms vs ranked is that since I play fairly casually and only in spurts I decay too much ranked mmr and always drop into bronze and do the bronze carry every six months to mid silver before I stop playing ranked again for a while.
However, in team builder and normals I play with mostly golds, meaning even if my team is experimenting or trying new stuff, I have better games in general.
The issue comes up though when people purposely troll and feed. Not even just unconventional picks, literally feeding in normals then excusing it as feeding. I might try kinda hard when Im learning a new champ in norms, but I can live with losing its okay. Except for the purpose trolls ... sigh.
