Smashcraft was really good, yeah, sadly the way Blizzard handled the different servers (and the lack of cross-server stuff for years) meant that the EU scene never really took off. Every time he had a new version of the map, he gave it so someone could put it up in the EU custom map thing too, but because the community was split like that it was way harder to get recognition (it was amongst the first pages when it first came out and quickly dropped to around page 4 in EU because of this) and to spread the word about the map.
It was basically a hero arena without items or levels, but 4 character archetypes (psions, eg. casters, tanks, supports, and whatever the name for fighters was) in a triangle relationship wrt bonus damage, some common moves (like a timing-based guard, a quick dash akin to a non-wall-jumping flash, and an "escape" specific to each character, ranging from a cleanse+cc reduction to cleanse+MS boost to ice block) and a fury bar used for big swings with ultimate move or tactically depleted to use buffed versions of standard moves. Everything was hitscan, both ranged and melee attacks, short deathmatches with sudden death mechanism, fast-paced, and very easy to get into.
That was the shit.
Edit: I guess tournaments banned the train map when it was in the pool because of the troll interaction with the tossing tauren tank? That was fun but pretty broken.

City of Tempest was the other UMS I was trying to think of.

Wasn't Nexus Word Wars a massive thing?

Lag station got banned because of mostly how brutal it was on shitty computers. The trolly Tauren thing was pretty hilarious too though.
But it was really fun to explain to my friends playing it that there was no autoattack function. It was balanced as hell too, 100% skill game.
Raynor Party was another really fun custom game if you have a lot of people and you don't know what to do. The old Runling Run was pretty addicting as well. And the old Island Defense was really good until they just screwed around with it. Also, until the creator DarkRevenant went full asshole and gave people the ability to buy their way into administrative powers, Mafia was really fun. Of course now mods blacklist people just for winning, and makes it toxic as fuck to play.

I just noticed chrome tabs now have a speaker icon on them if they're playing sound.

Yeah it was, but like the others lost it's novelty after a few games. Not to mention if it got lategame it just lagged your game like none other.
It's like, you could invest yourself in the game or... play this other f2p that is just way more robust, rewarding and supported.
@Nos, I noticed that two days ago, pretty sure it's very recent.

First Fire Emblem on the GBA and then Chrono Trigger? You're doing god's work son. Hopefully you'll enjoy Chrono Trigger as much as I did. Game was amazing for me.
why thank you very much good sir.

yeah sc2 came at a point in my life where I had the Time to finally be competitive (college with no computer restrictions yaaaaaaay) and I was so excited for it because broodwar was sooooo much fun (lurker xyz, special forces, hero arena, choose your d) but now I was old enough (and had the time) for the awesome competitive strategy part too.
but then while sc2 isn't bad, I feel bw does pretty much everything better save for the game engine things (resolution, mbs, matchmaking, 12 unit selection, etc.). but units? bw. strategy/build diversity? bw. custom maps? bw. battle.net (does sc2 still feel lonely or did they add chat rooms? REAL chat rooms.) ?? probably bw and sc2 depending on the specifics.
people just expected... more. I mean I know lotv still comin out and maybe that's the fix (as I've understood it hots has made it better?) but I dunno. sc2 was good and pretty and allowed for an easy way to compete but bw is just plain more fun.
I wish I had been old enough slash had the computer time to play iccup and shit. first game I ever played on an LCD screen was broodwar. but fuck custom games were SOOOOO good.

in BW and WC3 you could meet people by picking the custom games you joined, in sc2 its totally random which removes a huge social aspect of the game which is what mostly made it fun when you didnt want to ladder, and most ppl didnt spend most of their time doing ladder

also they got rid of the coolest units. like whose fucking idea was it to get rid of the lurker, defiler, reaver, and dark archon??
I've never enjoyed terran. no idea why. always hated them. I am a toss/zerg guy. toss back in the day but now mostly zerg. toss every once in a while.
AND THE ARBITER

The reason why SC2 custom games failed is 100% because of the popularity based joining and the lack of game room names / password type things. It removes a huge social aspect of the game. I remember in BW/WC3 you would just remake the same custom game with the same people over and over, none of which is possible now without a lot of extra work.
I remember in SC2 you would try to make a game with an unpopular map and no matter how long you waited no one would ever join because it wasnt at the top of the list. Oh well, blizzards own fault they are retarded and now I am playing LoL instead.

You used to be able to name a game 1v1 LT NR 20 minutes. Now you join a random 1v1 LT game.

at least when i played, you picked the custom game you wanted, and it sent you into a random lobby, so it was basically like solo q except without the mmr
before you could see who hosted the game for exmaple
it might just a by product of increased activity to make the old system unviable, but i dunno

I think I've got 2 2-drop, 1 smite and 1 Shadow Word: Pain in this draft... I got screwed over by the lack of low mana drops, but I drafted badly too, not gonna end well. Now I gotta pray I live to turn 6 and draw my 3 Holy Fire.

This sort of hits the crux of it (and why I brought up the SS2/Bioshock comparison).
Is Bioshock a bad game? No. But what does it offer that is an improved experience upon System Shock 2? There are many things System Shock 2 does better, and most of the things Bioshock does well are at least in some respects rehashes of things done well in SS2. If I've played SS2 what should compel me to invest $X and Y hours into playing Bioshock when most of the compelling elements are things I've seen before? And if I haven't played SS2, what should compel me to play Bioshock over getting a cheaper/free copy of SS2 that has better community mod support thanks to being an older game other than it being newer and shinier?
Obviously there are people who are hugely turned off to a game that has graphics poorer than one generation old, but given that this subforum routinely discusses old console games and handhelds, I assume that doesn't apply.
