Do I think deliberately designing it to piss on the FGC is a good idea? I mean, why would you. But yeah.

No in that they're selling the title to a mass audience, most of whom won't compete or care about the competitive pro level, and it's a one time buy (and thus they don't really need to focus on long-long term retention, outside of ensuring the regular target demographic gets enough hours out of it). Too much long-term retention for Nintendo means customers not buying other Wii/Nintendo console games, so they won't get royalties off of those purchases. I honestly don't know why they've been pulling the asinine shit like trying to pull Smash out of Evo. I mean really, free publicity? I understand the initial design to not target Brawl towards FGC, but...

I think that most gamers in general preferred Melee, even the casuals who have no idea about any of the techniques. Sure, when Brawl came out there is the shiny new game effect and it sold well, but the general opinion seemed pretty tilted towards Melee. I have no evidence though. Speaking of long-term retention, Nintendo's first-party games are infamous for almost never dropping in price unless they get a budget-game re-release.
