This is the aspect of Fire Emblem that absolutely kills the series for me, though admittedly only because I'm personally very OCD about this sort of shit. Basically with FE4 being the only exception, every other FE game I've found myself resetting over and over again to get better level-ups, then having the sudden realization that I'm not actually having any fun. It's a shame because I know it's the kind of game I'd enjoy if it weren't for the randomized aspects making it totally frustrating for me every time.

Yet if people complain about the RNG of other games, especially since basically every game uses a different one, apparently you're wrong/bad/noob, etcetc. Sense.

I've learned to live with RNG, and by live with I mean ragequit and go do something else for a few hours, lol. Source: XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within.....

There's a difference between just using an RNG, and the optimal gameplay being to reset and abuse it. Games that really embrace random elements have to put you in a position where you have to play around it--this is why permadeath and no saves are such a critical element of roguelikes. The entire genre doesn't work if you remove those aspects. This is also why it works in multiplayer games because you don't have the option to reload save--if you quit you lose. Games where the most typical response to rolling poorly is to reload your last save have failed to use the RNG properly because they aren't forcing you to play around it--they're just wasting your time. And "you could just not abuse the RNG" is a pretty poor argument here because practically speaking people don't do that. Anyone I know who actually is a big enough fan of the series to have actually completed multiple games in it reload saves to abuse level-up RNG to some extent. Even the most casual FE players reload save on character death (which consequently makes character permadeath one of the most pointless design choices because practically speaking virtually no one continues playing with a dead character unless it was intentional). The number of FE players who actually DO abuse/reset is a pretty clear indication that the way the game is designed has made that the optimal play, which is why it's frustrating. For the record I don't hold this specifically to just Fire Emblem. Since I'd known of their existence I don't play any Infinity Engine game without fixpacks that remove randomized level-up HP gains and randomized % chance to learn spells.

The game feels really different with permadeath off. I'm the most casual FE player there is, but the fear of permadeath is enough to really impact your strategy, especially considering that the game is balanced with permadeath on. The only other way you could change it would be to game over after the death of one character.
