Looks like they'd need to hit 12 million atm to make that claim. http://www.esportsearnings.com/gamesNot surprising since a lot of the money going to LoL players is from salaries and not tournament prizepools. It's a pretty ridic prizepool though. Dota players are pretty hardcore. LoL salaries such a huge chunk of prize money. Riot spends so much LCS per year, especially since there's 2 splits. I would actually be far more interested in actual player/team salaries, as that's usually a better indicator of money in the scene. I'm sure with the twitch streaming numbers and subscriber/donations LoL dwarfs the rest of the competition.
Yeah I'm pretty sure Riot pays teams 150k per split, not 150k per year, after googling it a bit.
So looks like there's 11.6 million spent in prizepools for LoL so far, and 9.6 million in salaries for LCS.
In other words, even if TI4 gets a 10 million dollar prizepool, after S4 worlds Riot will still be the biggest spender in terms of getting money to its players.
It's still a really big deal that the pool for dota has gotten so big though. Riot better step it up and at least double their 2 million they had at S4 worlds last year. Gotta keep the epeen contest going.

The big surprise isn't how big the prize pool is, it's the surprise at how much money the DotA playerbase is willing to basically just throw at Valve/the players. Given the level of response that Valve has received in other avenues for funding players/tournaments (team pennants/cosmetics, tournament tickets, etc.), I think the response to TI4 compendiums blew them away
Though really what this signals probably is a small minority of super-diehard fans who were willing to make contributions in the hundreds of dollars each when the medium allowed them to, since by comparison to TI3 compendium sales or tournament ticket sales for other events, the difference is too large.

It probably has something to do with all the cosmetics given out by the compendium this year compared to a single packaged courier or set with other tournaments.
but yeah valve has spent only 4 million paying their players compared to riot paying 20 million, but the players in dota get their salaries from their teams not valve. the community and teams pay for dota players income

If Riot released a set of limited edition Legendary skins for Worlds that went into funding the prize pool, I'm sure players would snap them up like crazy too. Just need to create and avenues for people to throw their money at you at this point.
|
That would honestly be really cool. There's all kinds of shit they could do.
Riot could look at the teams going into Worlds, look at what champs/skins they like to use, and then create bundles of those champs/skins and say 50% of sales goes to the prizepool or whatever. I bet there'd be a big response.

They did? I really liked them selling the team icons.

30°... Fml. It's not even that hot, it's just that it's in the air, so you kinda bathe in it. It gets somewhat oppressive.

I was watching some Indian news yesterday for funsies, and I lol'd when their weather channel was like "It's a nice cool 46c in Jaipur today"

That makes zero sense to me, lol.
Though admittedly, the response to the pennant system in DotA was quite lukewarm--especially after Valve made the concession of allowing item drops to all spectators and not just pennant-holders.

Edit: Also if Riot did this now people would probably get all butthurt about them "copying Dota." That said I think they should totally do it :p

People get butthurt about Riot copying dota no matter what happens.

Ketara you missed the entire point of that strip. The whole reason that strip works is because Blizzard essentially copied Warhammer/WH40k to create the Warcraft and Starcraft universes, which sets up the irony of GW "ripping off" Blizzard.
Which means it makes no sense in this context unless you were talking about people complaining about Valve copying League.
|
Oh no I get it.
It's still the appropriate response either way.
Because either way it's just as stupid.
Like, here's the serious appropriate response.
If game A does something that turns out to be very successful and a good idea, shouldn't game B copy it? If it would make game B better, wouldn't you want them to copy it? Why wouldn't they copy it?

Then you should have picked a PA strip more appropriate than that one for describing the situation. Because the particular context of this one relates to a different message than the one you're trying to deliver.

I feel like dota 2 fans (especially the die hard ones) have a huge inferior complex in regards to their "standing" in esports (and MOBAs). given the chance, they'll dump loads of cash into the competitive scene just to show ostentatiously that dota 2 can be as big as LoL.

Which is hilarious because there's no way that can ever be true at this point, at least until Riot themselves decide to basically pull the plug on LoL.
They need to just accept that and move on, with the knowledge that DotA 2 doesn't have to be as big as LoL to be a successful and legitimate esport.
Whatever, I'm sure Valve isn't complaining about the money.
Like, the situation reeks of Everquest vs. WoW, but the difference is that Valve has made a good enough product that unlike EQ2, DotA 2 is at least distinguished enough to stand out from the slew of other shitty second-rate MOBA games, so they don't have to worry about ending up like EQ2.
