This would still have good value even with the new Ork codex coming out this year, right?

Quick, someone tell me what I need to get to start an Ork army First off, with a July release rumored, you're in a bit of an odd place. If you plan to play before the new edition, you'll need the old codex, but once the new one comes out it'll be obsolete. Still, the codex is necessary for playing and also has decent lore and art bits in it. For now, you can download it from any number of sites and decide if it's worth the potentially lost $33. Corollary: While only downloading codices and books might seem like the easy way to go about things, if you ever plan to play at any sort of store, you'll want the actual codex. Not only is it easier to navigate for rules, many places and opponents will look down on you and may ask you to leave if you don't have the actual book. Now, as for models, you have to know a bit about how an army is set up. For now, all that's necessary to know is that an HQ unit and 2 Troops are the mandatory slots that you need to fill in the Force Organization chart. Lucky for you, that's pretty easy to do for Orks. Troops have only 2 options: Ork Boyz or Gretchin. Boyz are your mainstay, Gretchen are pretty much only there to soak shots and provide a shield with bodies, due to being cheap and weak. Generally you want 2 squads of Boyz to start, and then Gretchin later to fill in points. Of course, Boyz also get to take the ever-wonderful Trukk as a dedicated transport as well. Before you pick your HQ, you have to ask if you want a special character or a standard HQ. Characters are often the most expensive, but have special rules. At the time of writing (that is, using the current codex), I would say not to get any of the special characters. You never know if their special rules will remain the same in a new codex (or if they'll get removed, which has happened to special characters in both the last updated codices). On the other hand, a basic HQ will never go out of style. Each of the 3 choices have their own pluses and minuses: 1) A Warboss is the basic one. Customizable, with good options like the Power Klaw, the Bike, Bosspole, etc, this is the HQ you put in a squad and take into combat. He allows 1 squad of Nobz (basically mini Warbosses) to be taken as troops, when they usually fill the Elite slot. This is considered super good as Nobz are some of the best units in the codex, and making them Troops means you can take more and make them score. Putting a Warboss on a bike and taking a squad of Biker Nobz is considered super strong to the point that it was cheese back before all the other codexes got updated. However, your only Warboss models right now are a Finecast one or this old metal one if you buy it online. There's rumors that new plastic Warboss kits will come Additionally, if you want to put your Warboss on a Bike (highly recommended if you like Bikes and killing things), you can get this one from Forgeworld, which is a nice model but a bit pricier. Alternatively, you can get a Warboss and a bike kit and do conversions, if you feel comfortable doing that. 2) The Big Mek is less combat-oriented than the Warboss, but he brings either a big ass gun or a force field that increases the survivability of your dudes. He's your force multiplier HQ, and both main upgrades are fairly viable. He comes in a couple good models: Basic, With Shokk Gun, or With Bosspole. As of right now they all seem to be webstore only unless your FLGS happens to have some left over in stock. The Bosspole model is Metal and the other two are Finecast resin, so take of that what you will. Again, rumors of a new plastic model are on the horizon, but if you like the current ones get them before they go bye bye. Also he makes it so you can bring one Deff Dread as a Troop, which doesn't make it scoring but does make it hilarious if you like mech lists. 3) Wierdboy. Pretty much what it says on the tin. This is your Psyker HQ, with much different rules from any other Psyker in any other army. Basically he has 6 spells he can use, but rolls at the beginning of each turn to see which spell he must use that turn (can reroll with an upgrade). Potentially devestating, with a nifty model, many people like using him for the sheer boom power he can bring. Basically boils down to: Warboss is your customizable fighty HQ, Mek is your shooty/support HQ, and Wierdboy is your insane Psychic HQ. So, now that I've rambled for a bit, what to buy. The Battleforce will give you 20 Boyz, a Trukk, and 3 Bikerz (which you can build or save and convert into a Warboss bike and 2 Nob Bikerz). Not a bad place to start, you'll use all those models in most games. Grabbing some more Boyz is not a bad idea. Gretchin are never mandatory for a list (as I said, usually more just point fillers), but they're not bad to get if you like the models. If you take a Warboss, getting some Nobz is a good idea. Whether you run them footslog or convert them onto bikes is up to you (basically the bike conversion is swapping the head for a Nob head and throwing a Klaw/gun/whatever on it, you can find tutorials around), or you can buy the sorta expensive Forgeworld Nob Bikerz. (You don't particularly need to pick up a Deff Dread if you get a Big Mek, they're not too great right now but the model is cool and if you like it then go nuts.) So: Battleforce, HQ of your choice, Nobz if you go Warboss. Good place to start. From there, units considered to be good include: Lootaz: You're pretty much always gonna want at least one squad. Possibly the best shooty unit in the codex (outside of certain vehicles), potentially devastating with their range and ability to put out oppressive amounts of dakka. Warbikerz and Deffkoptaz: All Fast Attack options, all pretty good. Warbikerz are highly praised because bikes are great in this edition and they're very good for their price. Deffkoptaz are stupendous, but expensive (in model and for list building). However, well worth their cost. Both are worth buying, but remember you can only have 3 Fast Attack squads in an army. However, you may want to save one or two of those slots for the Dakkajet, because 6th ed is the edition of the Flyers and this one is actually pretty good. Battlewagon/Looted Wagon: Your tanks. Both pretty good, the Battlewagon can also be used as a transport if you'd like. Tanky and shooty, there's not much more to say about tanks. Except that the Looted Wagon doesn't specifically have a model so you can build it out of any other army's tank as long as you make it look Ork-y: so paint is sporadically and slap spikes and chains on it. Always fun to show up with a Leman Russ against an IG army. Hope this helps.

On a more serious note, GW used to sell a pack of Space Marines vs Orks in a box with some terrain and stuff as a starter kit (not sure if they still sell them?). If you're starting with a friend who wants to collect SM, you could both chip in and get some nice stuff? This used to be the starter edition. It got replaced with Dark Vengeance, which featured Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marines. However, rejoice! Dark Vengeance is being taken off the shelves and rumor has it replaced with a set of Orkz and Blood Angels. It will (rumoredly) be a relatively small number of models but will also come with some terrain. Additionally, it should come with a mini-rulebook (enough for starter games). You can hock off the Blood Angels to someone who wants to play them or just a SM player (who can probably use them, since BA and SM have similar models).

I'll likely get Battleforce just to start, get my supplies and start getting all that shit together, and then decide where I want to go from there. edit: So I need a sculpting knife, some glue, paint... I know you've linked supplies before, but I don't remember.

As for paints, This is the paintset they recommend for Orks. I can't speak to how good it is (Necrons really only require different shades of metal + 1-3 other colors), but it seems fair. Don't look around for the paintset, just buy those 5 off the list + whatever other colors you want. Those 5 should be good for basic Orky stuff (base, green skin, other detailing), but you'll want your army color, you'll want Red for your vehicles (because Red wuns go fastur), and likely some metallic colors for spikey bits. While you might think that you can get by with very few colors, you'll generally end up with a very comprehensive paint set after a while. Shades, highlights, washes, and other detail colors will come up from time to time, and the paint holds for a decent amount of time. Also, while you want the Black base paint, I prefer to use the black spray primer, since it gives a much more even coat. As for tools, you'll want at least 3 paintbrushes: Layer is your regular brush, Drybrush with stiff bristles, and a small Detail brush. You'll also need a hobby knife, sprue cutters, and maybe a file if you think you need one. However, don't get these from GW, the ones they sell are fucking expensive. But from them, get the Citadel Plastic Glue, since it works much better than super glue with their plastic models. Get superglue for resin/metal models though. The overhead cost can seem daunting, but if you're serious about the hobby it's no more expensive than gaming or certain sports.
