Heroes of the Storm is in a fairly confined but publicly viewable Alpha phase, and a lot of games on Steam are going for these "early access" models where people pay nearly full price to play games before release. Heck, LoL and DotA2 were open or near-open beta for a long time prior as well. Does this bother anyone else? I mean sure, it's nice to see and play things early, but doesn't it kind of take the fun out of Launch Day? Doesn't it kind of tarnish the magic of new games a bit? I mean, it doesn't ruin the games, but what's the point of having a "Launch" if everyone's been able to play it for a while beforehand? Especially in games where there's patches very often and the game is going to change drastically from the launch version anyway. On one hand, I know it's a way to get a lot of testers, but then, it's not really testing if everyone can see it anyway, no? I guess it gives them an excuse for bugs ("It's in Beta!" cried all the Smite players), but then in games like this you still have bugs post-release anyway and then you no longer have that excuse. I dunno, I was just thinking about it a bit and it was irking me. Depends on how they use these "endless" beta's. For example, I had no issue with Hearthstone or Gw2's beta stuff. It was actually fixing stuff and you could see why it shouldn't be released yet(the original beta priest was so meh). I do take issue when these beta's are forced live and the game is still not done, headlining features still not inplace.(see mechwarrior online) These things have advantages and disadvantages and it all depends on how the dev's use them. Honestly I think it's better then the old way simply because you have cases of ESO or pretty much every console release who have put all this stuff into day 1 buying and pre-orders and bigger editions and you kinda feel like they want the money so you cant really then be like "this game sucks" because they still got like 80$ from you more if it's an mmo and you paid for a month(remember when the first month was free?)

Well now they're learning that trick too. "Early Access" releases (which I personally haven't taken part in) are basically just paying the full price for the game to play the Alpha/Beta. That feels really skeezy to me, though if they're smart they'll actually use it to fix bugs and make a good game. Still takes the fun out of release, tho, imo. But I agree. There are some that have been useful/necesary, but I really hope this trend doesn't spread too far.

SC2 is a good example. Single-player held back and there was a week or two where they shut the beta down before release. I was mad hyped for that. I think my dad made me wash the truck when I got home with my SC2 box QQ.

I think open beta completely kills launch day hype because everyone who is excited to play it is already playing it. And no one is lining up at stores anymore to grab from that big display near the door, its all online. Edit: ^ if you like Japanese literature i read Kafka on the Shore and it was immediately in my top 10 of all time. I read it in English but i bet its an even better trip in Japanese. I did read 1Q84 and enjoyed it, so I'll probably return to Murakami once I finish this other book I'm reading, Confessions. Apparently the movie is really good but I don't want to watch it because it might spoil the book.

Yeah, I got the early access release of Starbound and while it's been kinda fun it's very far from a complete game, maybe a year away, not that anyone pretended that it wasn't. The main thing I don't like about early access is that it shows up in the same space as games that are actually finished and IMO the released games don't deserve to be knocked off of featured lists or what have you because some other developer decided to release an alpha. The other problem I have is that unless the developer is disciplined there's the real temptation to work on features they can show off and generate buzz with rather than engine stuff and yeah, there always is that risk of them simply not living up to their promises. Starbound in particular sometimes seems to promise that it'll be the end-all be-all of sandbox gaming and I know that's not going to happen.
