The only thing that could be better would be shifting the focus of the post from his travel to the tournaments, that's it. Everything else is not different from the other content-creators: I offer you content and games, you pay me if you feel like it.

I agree, he's not doing anything wrong here and some people are being unnecessarily hostile. He's entitled to put funds raised towards whatever he wants, so long as it's clear when people contribute what it'll be used for.
I do think it would have been better if the original post had been clearer that he was not going to be producing content at Blizzcon. Currently it leaves open the possibility that he would be, which may have led to some of the confusion.
He has now clarified this in his subsequent post. If people don't want to contribute, they don't have to.

The views and comments I'm about to express do not reflect on the company as a whole, and should not be used to represent BaseTradeTV. Before I even begin to address this thread, I'd like to remind you that not a single person is obligated to donate, or contribute. I'm honestly quite confused as to what everyone is upset about. I plan to meet and hang out with fans, tweet some pictures, as I do every blizzcon, but there is no promise of any kind other than putting on showmatches & an 8 man invitational event leading up to it. Only difference is this would be funded by the fans. My flight was fully funded on Day 0 (Not streaming any Starcraft 2). Regardless, I will still be hosting and commentating the rest of this tournament, so if you can get over your own projections of self-importance, maybe you could enjoy some of the games, especially since we have some pretty awesome players lined up for the RO8. GunGFuBanDa vs Minato Gerald vs DnS souL vs 3DBeeBly vs Denver Thanks for reading, see you guys in 16.5 hours! You wouldn’t have had to address half of this if you’d bothered to put some of it in the OP to begin with. In the complete absence of any information whatsoever why are you surprised with some of the reactions here? I mean....I personally just tried not to associate any negative motivations to Rifkin, and I didn't have any of these reactions. I did think the lack of information was kind of strange, so I'll admit it was nice that he clarified things.
It was pretty simple to me. He wants to go to Blizzcon, so he needs money, so he hosts a tournament and streams to get money. I suppose the only difference is he's doing it on the fan's dollar, but then a lot of streamers do the same thing.

last bit of criticism as someone who doesn't watch your stream often, it would have been better if you'd title the thread/title differently. you literally get half the flak if you just make it clear somewhere that this is where the donations go towards, but outside of a pretty crappy OP. it takes the some amount of effort.
either way, congrats and good luck.

the main reason people are reacting this way is because rifkin has a long history of doing exactly what he's doing in this thread. he does something questionable, people criticize him, and then instead of ignoring the criticism or handling it like an adult he writes these salty novels about how it's an outrage that he's being criticized and he does so much for the scene etc. etc
i don't know of any other community caster or organizer who has repeatedly done this stuff, he is the common factor and it's his own fault

The thing is he didn't do anything questionable now, so people shouldn't criticize in first place. And I know how he behaves/ed, but that doesn't mean you can do it no matter what he does.

i don't know of any other community caster or organizer who has repeatedly done this stuff, he is the common factor and it's his own fault Despite floating around the scene for a long time, haven’t really encountered a huge amount of Rifkin outside of BasetradeTV casts, all I know is his responses mildly irked me for exactly the reasons you outlined.
Something tonally like ‘Hey guys, would love to go to Blizzcon for x reasons but can’t afford it, I’m throwing this tournament and tips would fund my trip, would be awesome if you folks could help out’ is 100% fine to my sensibilities.
Getting salty at basic, basic questions to an OP that had NO information in it whatsoever and pulling the ‘I give so much to the scene’ is just, irritating. Well to me anyway.
So do many people, some of them for free. Fair play that fans have helped you make the trip, Basetrade have put out tons of good content over the years.

I'm always shock when BTTV "scandals"/ controversies pop up, it's like their is an entire world within the Starcraft scene that I am completely removed off and is deeply interested in the behind the scene functioning of online tournament Starcraft/streaming and of the state of the inter-personal relations between people this sphere. Feels weird to pass half your free time doing Starcraft stuff and somehow get blindside by things that dozens of people are aware off while you don't have a clue about them.
Anyway this one is pretty straight foward, give money to Rifkin or don't whatever, it's like streamer having a progress bar to building a new pc.

The community doesn't like rifkin. This barebones post was probably the best idea.
Hell, he probably should have just left out that he was raising money for blizzcon.

If he did that, there would be outrage when people found out that he was using the events to fund his trip. Sometimes the BTTV drama is legit. This time it's so tame that it feels like people are picking a fight for no reason.

Maybe post an OP with such novel concepts as ‘information’ in it and people wouldn’t ‘ree’?

What more would you have liked for it to include?

I would have thought something like is any of your time there going to be streamed back to yours or others channels.
If so what sort of content are you looking to stream.
Basically an explanation of what people would be getting for their money so they could make an informed decision as to whether they wanted to donate at all or how much.
So for example if this was to send you there so you could enjoy yourself on a personal level, i wouldn't donate. However if there was going to be stuff i could watch that would interest me then i would consider it.

I guess, the formulation "win-win" sparked the outrage.
Definitely could have been formulated better.
But also people are just provoking because they dislike him.
