Are the group stages played online? Are any matches played offline, and if they are, where are they played? Will it be possible to actually go and watch any games live?

Unfortunately no. No where to watch games live. Games are played only online until ro6.

The reason why MCanning doesn't have a picture in the OP is because God is ethereal and any depiction we make of him would be an insult to his perfection.

No I just confirmed it with TeamLiquid admins. They said it would be offensive to some cultures to show the face of God in a less than perfect light. Definitely not exaggerating this.

No information yet, but should be just a studio show without audience. Probably happens in previous casting studio that was used for challenger last year.

That was kind of what I thought / feared. Was hoping for some confirmation that it would be in front of an audience. It seems such an incredible waste not to have this tourney live.

Got to say, the scheduling is absolutely horrid for the Asia/Oceania players, who have to play at 3-6am. When 14 out of 32 players, that is almost half of the players, are from those regions, starting at 2pm EST is setting them up for failure on top of the cross server lag to NA they have to experience. I know it's called WCS Winter Americas and the casters are in the US, but they should at least accommodate half of the Circuit by starting at, say 6pm-8pm EST or even 12pm EST is better. Just my two cents.

Pretty sure they scheduled this way so they can show the games directly after WCS EU so people stay tuned in

That's understandable, but also consider this: the Asian/Oceanian audience won't be able to tune in to cheer for their region since it's middle of the night on a workday for them.

It's also cheaper this way, you don't have to pay the staff for the off hours and Oceania-NA time is hard to schedule in every case, I guess it could be latter but it will never be great for both East coast and Australia.

That's obscene! Those Brood War fanatics must have spread the word, they were the first to call "God" that subpar Flash guy.

Kinda disappointing that some did do that prematurely.

There was a moment after Bly lost a lot of Hydras and the queens were low on energy where I honestly think the old carriers would've won that when plus 2 air attack finished and Goblin was up 20 army supply.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

He went 4-2 overall playing TvP only and advancing as first in his group.

Nothing happened to it, obviously the matchup has been unplayable for Terran for the entirety of the last 8 years according to Battle.net forum or r/starcraft.

I think he is the second strongest Chinese player after TIME.

At least he got second in GPL.

Maybe Cyan is better? Hard to say, but TooDming is definitely in form again.

4th place in the Chinese qualifier for WCS Winter. I think some of that is facilitated by iAsonu not being anywhere close to full-time.

Yeah iA definitely fell off it seems. But with XY, Shana, Jieshy, Cloudy, Cyan, TIME, BreakingGG etc. the chinese scene seems pretty deep I have to say. Too bad there is no english coverage for most of it. Really hyped about that team league though.

I don't think I saw him play in at leasr 2-3 years.

I think he is the second strongest Chinese player after TIME.

At least he got second in GPL.

The chinese scene has a rich and long history of being both deap and vibrant and inexorably average so I can't say I'm that exited, Jim is the only trully "great" players China ever gave us no one else was really a tournament contender level player., I hope it change someday but I think their server situation really hurt their grow.
Maybe if they get to play on their server in the proleague they could turn out better then I thought.

Yeah that wasn't so great.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

I have to say, I think this format is much smarter and more sustainable long term. Sure offline matches have a certain sexiness to them, and who doesn't love big LAN events.

But done this way, we can spread out the content better, make each match feel more meaningful, and do something for the foreign scene that it hasn't had EVER: make series/group preparation as important as it is in GSL.

I feel like, as long as we're going to be doing Region Locked tournaments. THIS is how it should be done.

I wouldn’t be surprised if in 2019 we get three mostly online WCS winter / summer / autumn + 2 week-ender small super-tournaments, one in Europe and one in Canada. That is, a mirror of Korea.

I do love the idea of having offline finals and semifinals with a big cross over Super Tournament between seasons.

The big cost is travel expenses, and if Blizzard just flew everyone in a single region to a single studio say ESL in Europe, Blizz Arena in NA but only had to fly out 4-8 people per region I think it can be doable.

That would be ideal for me IMO.

But.. if the pencil pushers at Activision-Blizzard are still concerned about costs, then making the WCS Seasonal events all online wouldn't be the worst way to do it as long as we had at least 2-3 Offline events per year not including Blizzcon.
