Get $25 in Ting credit or $25 off a new device at https://ksl.ting.com

A word from Ting:

"We’re excited to be back sponsoring the best eSport out there and working with the legend himself, Nathanias!

This 2v2 event is the first of its kind, and we're psyched to a part of this memorable tournament.

We'll be giving away unlocked smartphones and GSM SIM cards during the stream, running a bracket prediction contest and more.

If anyone has any questions about Ting or the addition of our new GSM network, please comment and I (ActionJesse) will be here to help.

Cheers!"

Hey guys! I've been talking for a while about putting on a big sponsored tournament, and here we are! In the last month or so a few cool 2v2 events have come up and I've decided to make an attempt at further legitimizing the scene as both a competitive space that viewers find fresh, but also one that doesn't get in the way of progamers practicing for solo tournaments such as WCS. It's been a long time in planning but I'm very excited to work with Ting to make this happen.

The general gist is simple, 4 invited teams (TBA) will compete against 4 qualifiers (top 2 of each open bracket run on the dates listed on the above graphic). We'll then have a group stage where teams duke it out to give us a final 4 bracket to become the undisputed 2v2 champion team. The prize split for the top 4 2v2 teams is as follows

1st: $2000 (1000 each)
2nd: $1400 (700 each)
3rd: $1000 (500 each)
4th: $600 (300 each)

This tournament and its qualifiers will be played on NA server, unless two teams agree to play on another for latency reasons only.

The map pool will be:
Old Country
Katherine Square
Crystal Pools
Dune Trenches
Sacred_Path

Any 2v2 mapmaker that wants to flirt with me for a final addition to the pool is more than welcome to prior to the first qualifier. Your map must be available on all servers in case teams agree to play outside of NA for any match.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me here or on twitter @Nathaniastv . I'll be travelling to Sweden today so please don't be surprised if I don't respond until tomorrow.

I hope you're all as excited as I am about this unique opportunity and I will do my best to make it a true premier-quality broadcast for the 2v2 scene as a whole.

Please also join me in thanking Ting for their sponsorship of this tournament and support of the SC2 scene

Hey everyone,

After Basetrade's awesome 2v2 tourney, I couldn't wait to watch more competitive 2v2 action. So glad I was able to work with Nathanias and get my company to sponsor this event!

If anyone has any questions about Ting, give me a shout! We recently added GSM support, meaning unlocked (and T-Mobile) devices can now come to Ting. You just need to buy a GSM SIM card and you're good to go.

Also, make sure to use the ksl.ting.com promo code before you sign up for a $25 Ting credit or $25 off a device.

This will be REALLY GOOD. We gonna see some old wol 2v2 legends go at it with the current best 2v2 players. We will also see 1v1 players fail.

I doubt he will, and I doubt he'll play. He hasn't played in a 2v2 tournament since early 2011(?).

Good luck to everyone who participates, looks like some good stuff :D

However, old country is a shit map. Why don't you play on CruX Breeze, where you force top and top right VS bottom and bottom left? Hey, it may be 4v4, but it won TLMC, and it fucking channels the energy of big game hunter!

Thanks Nathanias and Ting for setting this up! It is greatly appreciated by those who enjoy 2v2 and want a larger competitive scene.

Considering the 4 invited spots, I understand that the emphasis will be on grabbing popular names in order to bring in high viewer counts. However, I think that this is also a great opportunity to add a competitive element to the 2v2 ladder. If just the #1 ranked team in the world was invited off ladder status as of the qualifier date, it would still allow for 3 flashy pro teams to be invited, while adding a compelling story line to the mix.

There is enough money on the line where I believe this would significantly raise the level of play on the 2v2 ladder, as well as add an element of depth to the players invited. Regardless of your decision, I am hugely supportive of tournaments like this and respect the effort that you all have put in to make it happen.

there is no such thing as high level 2v2 players in sc2 and they will always get beaten by a team of high level 1v1 players.

If that is the case, it seems like it is starting to be a viable option for mid-level 1on1 pros to learn 2on2 and swipe all the prize money. I think there are plenty of 1on1 "pros" that realistically can't expect to win this kind of money in 1on1 tournaments, but that will have a good chance of winning more if they pick a partner and specialise in 2on2. Would certainly be great if a few pairs of mid 1on1 players did they switch, at least part time! There is $$$ to gain!!!

Far as I know he hasn't had any 2v2 partners since before his twitch fiasco and, no, he isn't the best 2v2 player. I'm not sure he plays in any tournaments anymore tbh.

I watch imba pretty regularly and when he does play 2s he dominates whoever he is against. Protech isn't even close compared to imbacoaching in my eyes.

I never said he was bad. I am pretty good friends with imba if u didn't kno... He usually smurfs/doesn't play highest mmr and even still, ladder doesn't make u the best 2v2 player. >.> My main point was that he really doesn't 2v2 with any premades anymore since no1 that is good is really interested in it in general. Obviously, events like this change that though~

Intersting set of teams. I'd figure Catz will off-race, and probably Nerchdawg as well, but will the 2P team just go straight-up?

I admit I missed the previous BaseTrade installments. I just don't think ZZ is a strong team comp, and I know Catz is capable of such a thing (as is Nerchio).

It's got its issues, but there are some things you can do with it. I don't play quite on the same level, but sometimes I've gone SH-Hydra and my friend has gone Muta-Ling, and we just mutually push across the map with shitloads of static D and the creep spread of an unusual number of auxiliary queens. It also has the strength of mass lings in the early game, which can deal with Hellions if you share unit control and always have one person babysitting the lings instead of macroing at all times. I haven't gotten the mid-game to work out terribly well though. Usually when we reach the late game, it's because we dealt damage early on (as very much intended) so the opponents had to dedicate time and resources in the midgame to rebuild.

It's probably the composition I fear most in the very early game, as a Zerg player myself.

YEEEEEHAAAAAAWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!11111111

i'm loving that there is an open bracket qualifier. i predict qualified teams to stomp the invites except for the koreans myb
and thats exactly why u need an open bracket. to let the best 2v2 teams (whoever that may be) be able to participate!

everyone who knows 2v2 will also know which race combinations will show out on top and which will have a hard time. the map pool is nice except for sacred path. that map will get veto'd alot. plz let there be vetos and dont force anyone to play a map that is imbalanced for their specific race combo

that said, let the team game madness begin!

My opponent TangTang didn't respond and took forfeit win
I have no way of contacting the opponents - they are not responding

Is there a designated group chat like ESL group chat?

I searched and searched for this and then started to think ppl were messing with me, now I find it THE day after signups, gotta be fkin kidding me....

Either way I am super excited for this one, more so then GSL finals even. Could have invited better teams though, now there is a reasonable chance Larry and Legacy win O.o.

This is my guess of 1on1 vs 2on2 skill:

A top korean 2on2 team will probably beat two random pro 1on1 players that have never played 2on2 seriously in a bo3. But the two pro 1on1 players will not need many hours (serious) practice before they will figure out the builds and timings enough to beat the top 2on2 team on better mechanics.

So predict a team of 1on1 pros that actually spent some time to seriously practice 2on2 before the tournament to win.

Sorry if I sounded agressive, I misinterpreted yours for a 1v1 masterrace statement.

I hope we will see more awesome strats that exploit the 2 player setup.

Well currently Nathanias is casting the Gfinity tournament on their 2nd stream lol http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/GfinityTV 2

So I'm guessing this was a TL error and that the 2v2 tournament is on a different day. Or maybe someone in the know could weigh in on this? :D

Nathanias wasn't supposed to cast Gfinity in the first place. He's there to replace Harstem who dropped out due to illness.

TaKeTvs PC couldnt handle SkyMechtoss vs SH-Infestor-Ultra-Roach-Hydra-Viper and crashed SC II. Now they have to wait till the games ends and it must be so epic (our draged out, that it still not ended after 30 mines (+20 mins before the crash).

He did not know that he would cast Gfinity till Harstem became ill.

They get 5k in price money, but can't be bothered to get all the potential youtube views? >_> Not sure what the sponsors model is, but not putting it on youtube doesn't make much sense to me. I think they will upload the VODs though.

Anyway, I'll watch the marathon twitch VOD if that is what it takes!

Also, thanks for setting up the tournament!!

Can you set this to normal player colors rather than team color?

It's confusing for me to see only 2 colors in a 2v2.

Yeah, I guessed along those lines

Note that MMA/Crank is the only invited team who still has a chance. Proof that being a god in 1v1 doesn't mean much in 2v2 settings

they played 2v2 unlike most other contenders

Woooo, an invited team that qualifies! Probably the highest raw skill there, but still, it's good for viewership tomorrow!

Seems the semis will only be best of 3 which to me is extremely dissapointing.

So lets say these 2 no-names with godlike 2v2 skills are able to win. It would be nice to see one of the teams involved in clanwars pick them up just for the 2v2 matches (I'm aware it isn't that simple) to maybe show just how great 2v2 can be played on a bigger stage
If all men were created equal there would be no reason to declare it.

I think Lilbow and Marinelord will win this, they shown knowledge of 2v2 while also got the mechanical abilities.

1 Base 8 Gate Blink All in anyone? I mean, they can give controll and got 2 people microing the stalkers.

Really disappointed that the invited teams showed very little understanding of 2v2 or preparation for it. I would have liked to see more qualifiers and less invitations to big names. There have been many 2v2 tournaments in the past with little to no recognition. The no-namers in this tournament are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the niche 2v2 community out there.

Just wanted to say, that is its cool to see a 2v2 tournament. And that it is nice to see "pros" getting beat by unknown teams because they know the meta better.

Comes down to a few things, some of the players requested/suggested it based on the vastly different timezones they are from as well as my own setup and TakeTV doing our German stream. There was also the issue of adding maps for longer series and players not having time to practice them.

This is the first time a tournament like this has really happened and the way it collided with my casting/travel schedule makes this the ideal way to organize things. Keep in mind this is still a $5K tournament and not Dreamhack so I don't imagine there's really that much to bet upset about having bo3 until finals

Hmm if they mine the map out faster with their high worker count and its still a stalemate, then they sac their workers, they'll have more int he bank for the late late endgame

That Hanfy pause was the most Dota thing to happen to SC2 since Scarlett's showmatch against Qxc. Shame that that amazing fleet of Larriers (not a typo) didn't manage to win out.

afaik he and hanfy have both played their fair share of 2v2s, so they´re equally experienced in 2v2 lategeame as PureLegacy and larry

I think its cuz 2v2 maps are way bigger (in order to accomodate 4 players) so theres much more room to exploit and harder/costlier to hardcore turtle (no movement) on the map

SC II tends do bug out when it wants to bug out and will not stop.

I got black screens usually arround in 4vs4.

Me neither. Things get truly laggy in 4v4s or even 3v3s now and then, especially with big armies clashing, but I never got a black screen.

2v2 also feels so much more exciting the whole game. It doesn't end in the first 10, but there isn't a whole lot of down time. Absolutely loving the games today (weren't able to watch previous ones).

This is the first time ive been able to tune in for this, and it is REALLY cool that Ting does in-screen ads like this, and especially promote the KSL credit in the ads too! Such a small thing, but really shows that Ting cares about this and supports this! Coming from someone who studies marketing and ads, this is awesome!

Also the games are sick. Larry is a beast.
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

I think Ting's learned a lot from their previous tournament sponsorships (SHOUTCraft American Winter and Destiny I). They've been doing a lot more since then to get more value from their investments.

Every probe he built once he hit that state was promptly dropped upon by Lillekanin and picked off.

He built like 3 probes in total when he hit that state with about 5-10 ingame minutes between each one. There was no excuse not to try building them like Crank did.

That's not optimal though. You shouldn't ever be on 100 probes.

One of the biggest advantages air mech has over zerg terran is the ability to expand faster while controlling the map with pheonix hellion. In the first game vs kanin/hanfy, I should have sacced probes. However, in the second game, I never actually got to max supply. I was pumping phnx void off of 8 stargates, which requires a powerful economy. If we continually force engagements, which can be done with air, then the probe lead is only an advantage. In 1v1, it makes sense to cut probes in pvp around 60 for example, because of defenders advantage. However, the 2v2 maps are so big, and air is so mobile, that forcing fights while the supplies are below 160 is easily done. Additionally, if I transition into carrier, I need the mineral bank for interceptors, as rebuilding interceptors for 12 carriers three times over chews through my bank very fast.

The standard protoss deathball gains value significantly as it approaches max, but mass pheonix gains very little value once you reach 30 pheonix. Because of this, when Im going pheonix I am actively trying to force fights wherever I can. While 100 probes is quite a lot, I would not rule it out as a viable option.

Now we're hearing high-level 2v2 strategy from a tournament finalist. That seals it - this tournament had everything. Pleasure to have watched you play, Larry, and congratulations on your excellent results.

Highly entertaining 2v2 tournament, thanks nathanias and ting.

What he said! I loved watching this and I can't wait for more craziness like this to happen in the future!

I missed the final and bronze match though, it got too late for me. Need better casting times for us poor tired Europeans.

he said they would, and I'm waiting for that. Seems like he is busy streaming lotv beta atm though, so not sure when that will happen. :/

Vods are 99% uploaded, a generous viewer cut them up for me. I'm pushing the qualifier games out then the groups over the next day or so. Trying to find out how to publish them all without flooding my YT sub feed
