KOTH style tournament by Clauf. Might aswell make an LR thread.
|
So this is what Clauf was up to. Lets see.
Is it me or is the game on a low framerate? Yeah, the game looks really choppy
|
hooray to the op for making a LR !
|
strange production. its like watching a japanese game show
|
All this money but no 60fps makes me sad. This doesnt even look like 30

Grubby takes the first game
|

the game speed is almost doubled it seems like. Not sure if i like that in the later stages of the game, the first 8 min in a a normal game would be okay...

This is really disappointing after their HS fight night. Sound quality is bad and game FPS is way too low. BasetradeTV is also on and they blow Clauf out of the water in in-game production.
|
This sounds fun!
And then I saw the quality of the production :/

I could see him actually being a robot. Overwhelmed by his emotional chip, he tries to handle all the new sensations by nervous giggling and english idioms.

When is this recorded? Anyone know?

Whirlwind had some good games: Flash vs Ryung, DRG vs Innovation, TRUE vs Fantasy, MMA vs Mvp.

Yeah, but maybe that was just because it was played for two years and remained a popular enough map?

134 workers killed hahaha

That amuses me, in the pre-match interview Grubby was talking about how Hasu doesn't realise when he could hit a winning timing, then he proceeds to just walk around his own base with 5 archons while he couldve attacked and rolled Hasu's base.

There is nothing wrong with sex, but when the participation of the one Sex is limited to appearing half-nude and mute, particularly in a setting as dominated by males as esport is, I can't blame people for taking offense (though I don't think it's worth more than a chuckle at the expense of the producers). Why are they there? What role do they serve? Do we really need such stale images of power to big up the players?

Oh, glad you cleared that up for me; if you say it doesn't, then it can't possibly demean women. Now tell me about all the piles of cash cheerleaders make and how women are welcomed when they rather want to play the sports where they're supposed to shut up and look pretty.

Life is sexist. What about the cheerleaders in all major sports? Or the strangely monogendered sideline reporters who exist only to offer humorous anecdotes about the player's weekend activities? Or the female sports anchors that are never behind a desk so they can show as much leg as possible?
I mean it boggles my mind that people let themselves get bent out of shape.
That being said those chicks were ridiculous and I rolled my eyes each time they showed up.

Status quo and and intentional sexism ARE mutually exclusive however. Status quo is the path of least resistance, so it's mutually exclusive with almost anything that's intentional.
It's simply status quo to have pretty girl present things, for many reasons. One reason would be the catering to the audience (mostly males and majority of people are straight) Women's bodies are also culturally associated with beauty in general not just sexiness, so even if the audience is split 50/50, picking female eye candy is the obvious choice.

Now tell me about all the piles of cash cheerleaders make
Cheerleaders are professional dancers (at least in baskeball,) they make a standard professional dancer's salary I presume. They also love dancing. You're making it sound like cheerleaders at sports events are all the girls that wanted to play that particular sport but instead were cruelly told that since they're women they can't play but only cheer on the men... Obviously, this contradicts reason, because cheerleaders have to be skilled in their own craft and not in the sport they're cheering for.
and how women are welcomed when they rather want to play the sports where they're supposed to shut up and look pretty.
Women are welcomed to play sports just fine. I don't know what happens in your great progressive feminized homeland, but over here in America starting in high school girls can play all the sports that boys play except for american football and wrestling (I think.)
I agree with M0ck in what was written above my post as well; even though I think the problem of sexism in especially esports is a bit too severe for me to chuckle at. : /
The problem of sexism in esports? There's no problem of sexism in esports. There's no institutionalized sexism, there's only some vocal douche-bag fans who have no actual say in anything, but that's not sexism in esports that's just some vocal douche-bags being douche-bags.

Whelp, watched the end of it and the white suits, the girls questionably dressed (questionable taste I mean), the wheel, and the general editing and arrangement made it look like a cheap tv show.. Really didn't like it, but meh. Having another tournament to compete in is good for players, and I guess the intention was good, but going for something more.. sober? may have been a wisest choice in my opinion. It's not a question of having girls involved being sexist or what, I don't think booth girls ever shocked anyone in BW, it just looked ridiculous the way it was done :<

They have such a nice studio and it seems like they aim for a crystalclean production but everything seems just a bit off and seriously, these low FPS are just a no go, I hope they fix it for next time.

Yeah I can't watch it, feel like I need to run and hide behind a wall to not overload on awkwardness and whatever-it-is. Not sure what/who you lads are aiming for to be completely honest.
This is your baby though right TorteDeLini? You mind sharing the ideas behind making it what it is? Tried to watch some of the Hearthstone stuff but man, I felt embarrassed for me, casters, players, other people watching. Felt like I almost died of embarrassment. Had a thought that you might be doing it to cash in on some weird sub-culture of TCG-people where this level of awkwardness is standard but since you are also doing it with SC2 I just have to ask.
Best of luck though, hope you find your audience!

A shame with such a nice concept and what seemed to be some top notch production. Lol typical Swede, cant get out of that PC suit. :D Can't escape a sexist society, unfortunately... Living in Sweden has morphed your sense of what is sexist. No, it's definitely sexist. But, dear swedes, think of it as a tongue-in-cheek riff on how woman are traditionally presented in male dominated sports. Look at the colors in this show - the whole thing has to be done with an ironic distance! It's fabulous! It's not sexist. It doesn't demean women. It's status quo, in the same sense that female cheerleaders are at ball sporting events or fight-girls are at combat sports events. Status quo and sexism are not mutually exclusive ^^ There is nothing wrong with sex, but when the participation of the one Sex is limited to appearing half-nude and mute, particularly in a setting as dominated by males as esport is, I can't blame people for taking offense (though I don't think it's worth more than a chuckle at the expense of the producers). Why are they there? What role do they serve? Do we really need such stale images of power to big up the players? Life is sexist. What about the cheerleaders in all major sports? Or the strangely monogendered sideline reporters who exist only to offer humorous anecdotes about the player's weekend activities? Or the female sports anchors that are never behind a desk so they can show as much leg as possible? I mean it boggles my mind that people let themselves get bent out of shape. That being said those chicks were ridiculous and I rolled my eyes each time they showed up.
All of those women actually do something, the girls at ESGN are just standing and smiling and sometimes walking with someone, it's weird and awkward even if you don't think it's sexist.

The ESGN girls thing is cringeworthy cheesy shit and it's embarrassing to watch.

I am trying to remember whether there was this much of a fuss over the OGN Stargirls
|
Just watched the rebroadcast, my 2cents: * the games were fun to watch; the last one was borderline silly, but still fun * the format is interesting for a change * the video quality was awful with all the stuttering and seemingly low framerate * the sound quality was awful too; casters sounded like robots * the whole production reminded me of a Japanese game-show; not my taste, though others may like it * I don't like replay casting in general, but at least games were from the same patch
For me it failed on the main points. Though video and sound probably will be fixed in future broadcasts, I guess they'll keep the game-show like "nerd appeal", which turns me off.

Thanks for the input (:
We've noted the framerate issue and sound quality as well. Things will be smoothing out as we move forward. More stylistic things that you guys don't like may be transitioned out in future seasons.
Games are casted live at the time, then sent to post-production.
I've taken into account valid criticisms from the past 5 pages, thanks everyone (:

I heard something about them flying all kinds of people to Berlin for some Hearthstone games?! Seems kinda odd.
We are based in Berlin and our studio is in Babelsberg. On ESGN TV we try to cover all eSports related activities. For Fight Night we started with HS, SC II and SF IV. But that may change in the future, and we could add more games
For ESGN.com we cover the games our partners support with tournaments: SCII, LoL, Dota2, BF4, WoT, CS:GO and HS.

The funny but rather awkward "90s game show" feeling should be taken out. Besides that and the already mentioned production issues (the colors were way oversaturated, never noticed that kaelaris red beard is red like that when i met him in real life ) i really like the concept of the show. Unfortunately not all players are showman and therefore seem to be a bit out of place when getting introduced (like tlos entrance ceremony...awkward )
+ Show Spoiler +And classic german move by hasuobs: Playing it safe, taking the money gl to grubby!
|
Roger that, thanks! It's good to hear we're on the right road :D
|
Actually besides the - already mentioned - production issues I really enjoyed the show. It was something fresh/new somewhere between the really sober production by ESL and dumb casts like yesterdays MLGGameOn. Keep going - I'll definitely tune in tonight :D
|
Thanks, great to hear! We are definitely going to do more!

From a production standpoint there's some weird stuff going on with ESGN so far. Mic quality has improved since the pilot broadcast but game sound quality has suffered as a result. There's some really weird EQing going on somewhere, if you listen to things like the mothership core firing or orbital command building, you'll notice it's very tinny, there's no low frequencies in there what-so-ever. I'm not sure what's going on there. Also the framerate of the stream is extremely poor, I estimate around 20fps or so, which is just unacceptable in this day and age.

Sounds like there is just a Mic picking up a couple of speakers. <_<

I don't think this is unexpected, it takes far too long for the prizemoney to ramp up to something worthwhile.
Dunno it would be nice for ESGN to figure out a way to make it worthwhile for these guys to risk their money. Not sure what it would take.

Yeah, risking $500 for an extra $250 in a Bo3 is stupid. No-one would take that chance.

Man that attack blew my mind. So glad I woke up in time to see that three way.

Geez SC2 community, 600-1000 viewers this week? Hearthstone version got something like 8000-13k viewers. A Mrs Spyte stream had more viewers and who the heck is Mrs Spyte?
Socke vs. Nestea with Artosis and Kaelaris casting? I know its cheesy production but its a little embarrassing, you can have two streams up at once given decent internet, support eSports.

Sorry, but this is nonsense. With the same argument you could promote watching all streams just to buff up numbers. Obviously not many people enjoy the ESGN content much; at least not when there is other stuff running too.
|
There's WCS Challenger, Warer.com and Fight Night going on right now, there's just a lot of content at this point. If only this started ~2 weeks ago then they had 1-2 weeks with no real starcraft content during EU primetime and a lot of people might've gotten hooked on fight night.

Yeah but the $25k at the end of the rainbow is pretty nice. I'm surprised Mvp didn't go for it at least, he's got a 63.89% winrate vs comparable players so the expected return of going for the $25k after winning the first game is (0.6389)^6(25k) = $1700 (0.703)^6(25k)=$3017. The guys got enough esports money so it's not like he needs the $500 to feed his family, I'd have gone for it.
edit: fix calculation for bo3.
|
Why are you guys so negative? There is just too much on at this moment! The content is fine.
|
This is why all zergs should go swarm host and defensive. Even Nestea is going to loose to Socke.

I checked the LR thread for the second one, and the problems seemed to continue so I am not watching anymore - it is as simple as this and ofc I prefer WCS Challenger cause I think the format is pretty great and thrilling to watch
I just hope they fix their issues for the second edition and I will try it once again

Well, thanks to ESGN for the effort, but: - It's 1 month old games. - It's (compared to nowadays' top level progamers) rather average/bad players. - Cheesy production. - Bad format (no one would risk 500$ in a bo3, that just doesn't work in SC2). - No advertisement anywhere. If you don't look in SC2 Tournaments @TL.net you won't even know about it. ...
That's no criticism, only an explanation of the viewer numbers. Whereas ESGN is almost the ONLY ESPORTS EVENT in HS. So... there you have it.
Hoping for a second season with improved format and more people will watch.
|
Yea ESGN is doing an amazing job but I think to make it so someone doesn't just take the money and go 100% of the time is make it so they get 250$ for the first win and 500$ for the second win.... Then atleast we might get more than 1 BO3

Hm, this needs to happen for Starbow.

1/ ESGN needs to improve his format. Nobody ll never, EVER, E.V.E.R risks 500$ in another Best of 3 for .... just 250$ !!! I think +250$,+250$,+500$ for the first 3 wins seems better. But let's be honest, in Starcraft 2, Bo3 is too random unless one of the 2 players is waaaayyyy better and u know your next opponent AFTER u decide to play again. So i don't think they 'll never try a second games. OR, I think "money earned can't be loose" 'd be much much better !
2/ Replays hurts the HYPE. One month old Replays destroys the Hype with a big hammer !
3/ Plz improve, i love your (Hearthstone) show !

They also have to think about what type of broadcast they want to be.
Is it a weekly show? Or a small tournament? One game/different games? Which viewers do they want to attract?
So far, it seems it's not quite clear what the unifying idea behind ESGN is. I mean, they want to tap into the huge viewerbase for gaming that currently exists. But how are they differentiated from what's already available out there?

I feel like with all the money they're sinking into production and stuff, that they probably need more than a peak of 5k viewers. I'd love to read the business case for this project.

I hope for them to have some funds to keep trying and improving. For all we know its Clauf (aka Azubu) who is funding this, and I guess we know where Azubu money came from. On a related note, what ever happened to that big LYGF sponsor announcement? We are still waiting, they said they would announce it like 15 days ago...

The format definitely needs to be improved: the player that declines to go on and decides to take the money looses the right to play again and should not be re-invited again. The prizepool also needs to go increasing (for example 100 - 250 - 550 - 1200 - 2500 - 5500 - 12000).

Why would you punish the player if he chooses one of two legitimate options? Makes no sense at all , lol.

Actually, it sort of does, NarutO. Last week, on the Street Fighter edition, we along with Tasteless and Frodan watched Alioune play Xian with $10,000 up for grabs and it was perhaps the sickest moment in any Fight Night season in any game. I'm with you in that a player should never be forced to keep fighting or press his luck - that'd be just wrong - but the hype reaches crazy levels when someone goes for the big bucks, so there should be a way to reward taking risks.
