I'm suprised that WCS EU still has over 12k viewers on the main stream and around 4-5k on the other streams as well. I think there would be even more viewers if Blizzard would have clearly said what those players were playing for in challenger now.
ahhh, feels good just watching Starcraft and updating the LR thread. Haven't had the time to just chill and enjoy in a long time. I should be able to do some more LR threads now after almost not being on TL at all for a month.
Shellshock, do you know where I can find a list of the templates, the small symbols (I am looking for the twitter-symbol right now to put it next to the casters names). I'm pretty sure there was a thread about it or maybe a Liquipedia-article but I can't find it

Yeah I wanted to watch today but I had huge lags, often before engagements, so that's it for me for today ..

This observer is amazing, manages to jump to the base just as it's killed.
Ok I can see that. But it's going to take a ridiculous number of zealot warp ins to break any spine groups.
I personally think harassment warp ins in this situation are a terrible idea, even if you kill an expo, wtf kind of difference does it make if the zerg has 15k/10k bank, he'll just rebuild a 300 mineral hatch after the protoss wastes 1500+ minerals killing it.
Thing is, Mana has more or less no good options here, this is probably the most broken playstyle in the game.
MaNa seems to be trying... a bit. Firecake is in full defensive mode, he does pretty much nothing apart from occasional DT yo-yos. I wonder if MaNa could get a draw.

bad regarding the entertainment, not the player skill.
That said, casters are handling this pretty well. They still don't sound bored ^.^

He´ll try to kill him with free units. Tbh. all-in->Carrier remax->all-in->Carrier remax->... would have probably gave him a bigger chance, when he was still up in mins and not that down in gas.

HerO vs ByuN we see the ttime until 1:31:00 so I guess 1:32:00 or 1:33:00
There has to be a nother way for Mana to deal with this, or maybe it's jjust the map and being unable to abuse good positioning skills which leads to the ultimate more efficient composition to always win if both players play well enough

This map, this situation? Hope Firecake fucks up.
Man the mass tempests to counter the creep spread build, gotta try this.
All of you complaining that they play too passively, how would you break eachother's positions? lol. They aren't going to throw a game just because the viewers find it boring.

manas losing so he's not going to attack especially with all the spines+ spores. + not enough gas to remax the army.
Firecake has so much money there's no reason for him to attack especially with loscusts and its gradually killing things (albeit super slowly) thus Mana's gas is slowly dropping.

didnt see the whole game but atm he's maxed so he'd have to trade something. and mana's production isn't the problem, it's the army. Plus he'd have a hell of a time getting to the important tech.

This is the time when we figure out that Blizzard has built in a 2 hour cataclysm in which nukes fall over the entire map and kill both players simultaneously.

To be fair he could probably be a bit more aggressive if he truly wanted it to end. However this is the safe (but boring) way to secure the win.

the stream has 3 minutes delay
although it might take Mana more than 3 minutes to kill enough to win even if Firecake's afk.
I think MaNa's best chance was to build a bunch of warp prisms and spam warp in as much as he can in FireCake's main/natural, pulling swarm hosts back and allowing him to push up front. EDIT: instead of waiting until passed the 90 minute mark to build warp prisms.
weirdly enough half my twitter-feed is about this game. Qxc is talking about game design, Daisy is whining and Naniwa retweeting it, Grubby is talking about it, Incontrol is ranting and so on :D

A quick summary of the first 20 mins of the game is that pretty much the only aggression from FC's side was taking a nibble on Manas 5th (yep, 5th) with locusts, killing few probes and taking the shield off the nexus.
There should be a new late game ability for Protoss(available at the Fleet Beacon) to call The Golden Armada for 5000min/4000gas and it would kill every single Zerg air unit and then disappear.

So FireCake can remax on 100 mutas and finally finish the game :D

Like how awful this game is.
Also, when have swarmhosts ever produced a good game? Either the toss wins quickly enough to overwhelm them and so they aren't a big factor or slowly losses to what seems to be the new bl/infestor (unstoppable turtle army) for this matchup.

Anyways, Akilon waste needs to be removed from the map pool.
no mining no units killed for 3 min. with Swarm host +infestor thats not going to ever happen unless mana goes home and firecake decides to just accept a draw which is highly unlikely.
On October 23 2013 04:07 Yhamm wrote: can't MaNa force a draw by making lots of drones and mining out the map? :p
No any time a unit is killed the draw timer is reset, and when there are 3 minutes remaining both players will get a warning so firecake won't be caught by a surprise draw. I still don't know if locusts kills count, but if they do, then we won't get a draw.

HasuObs Victorious After Opponent Dies Of Exhaustion During Nine Day Game
The post-game autopsy revealed Bly's heart failed on day five of the marathon game, though HasuObs continued play for four more days until ESL was notified of Bly's passing. 'I thought I just needed a little more time to complete my composition, I'm sorry to hear of my opponent's passing," HasuObs told reporters in a press conference following the match.
Thorzain commented, "I think Hasuobs attacked a little too early and should have built on top of his lead."
and this is why blizzard wants units to counter each other aka why we can't have nice things. how long has this been going on in real time? longer than the TI3 game that went 97 minutes?
Okay I come in and see a Mothership and start to think this might be an entertaining game, then I see the commentators talking about a longest game record and look at the timer..
I have no idea what Mana thinks he can accomplish. He keeps trading expensive tier 3 units for free units, and has done so for over an hour. There is just no way he could win this.

No there isn't, and there really shouldn't be because if say 3:00 was the draw time, then Mana would just go into even harder ultra-turtle mode in the hope of reaching that time. Mana probably should have quit by now, but if he knew there was a time at which the game was draw this play style would actually make quite a bit of sense.

Spoiler: FireCake wins. It happens by him constantly picking off a few units of Mana's with viper abduct. Once mana has no more gas and goes a bit below 200 supply he will type "gg" and leave.

Chris Loranger @LorangerChris 2m Imagine a internet disconnect. Load from replay would take like a hour itself just to load the game from where the disc happened.
This game will go into history as the game that made blizzard realise that any game that goes on for longer than 2 hours on the game clock will be a draw.

this reminds me of a dr seuss book hop on pop. "THING THING What is that thing? THING SING That thing can sing! SONG LONG A long, long song. Good-by, Thing. You sing too long."

I guess Mana actually hopes that Blizzard will realize something from this game about PvZ lategame. (That Zerg Static D needs to cost supply :p)

Firecake can lose this game? This is winner's match after all.

The thing is: This is the winners match. MaNa plays vs BlinG next. And he probably does´nt know, that the losers match has already been played.

Protoss static def doesn't cost supply either, that is not the issue.
It's moving crawlers and the combination of spells and stupid units that causes this.

In the same boat. Afraid to look away and miss the actual engagement T__T
What are the odds one of these players actually kill themselves before the game is over? 30-40 percent?
I know that Mana has given up and all, but if he really wants to bm Firecake and states that this style is ridiculous, he should make this game last longer, thus making pylons

better would be if he just stopped playing and never actually quit and the game went on for 40 more minutes because firecake didn't realise it.
The funny thing about this is that it doesn't showcase anything, games don't turn out this way naturally. It doesn't show some imbalance in the game, but maybe an imbalance in the head of someone.

It was best game of the year. Non stop action, no 1 200-200 fight into GG (there were more, ya know :3) and great positional play from Mana + cool oracle cotrol.

free units can work, just not if they work standalone ! I wish they would reduce the repair cost for Terran. To much free health care in Sc2, everything gets healed up for free outside of battle, meanwhile you have to pay for healing your mech T.T .

Just add 2 hours of silence at the end of his old neutral cast video.
no, 2 hours of: Protoss units are walking to the right. Protoss units are walking to the left. Protoss units are walking to the right. Overlords are puking creep. Protoss units are walking to the left.
Also I think he should have done what Socke suggested, sat on top of his ramp with 200/200 army, forcfields and 10k gas bank. The game would be like 15hrs and SC2 would actually become real sport as weak players would die

If I hosted a tourney and players did that, I would disqualify both of them for making no attempt to end it.

HasuObs Victorious After Opponent Dies Of Exhaustion During Nine Day Game The post-game autopsy revealed Bly's heart failed on day five of the marathon game, though HasuObs continued play for four more days until ESL was notified of Bly's passing. 'I thought I just needed a little more time to complete my composition, I'm sorry to hear of my opponent's passing," HasuObs told reporters in a press conference following the match.
Thorzain commented, "I think Hasuobs attacked a little too early and should have built on top of his lead."

So that was basically a three-hour balance whine?
Design whine, not balance I would say. He can always just all-in all games as it was in WoL and I think he can get to close to balanced situation.
The game doesn't need to be balanced for mined-out late games.
It probably should. Otherwise the race with imbalanced late game units will aim to get to the late game. See for instance late WoL where zergs were trying to get to broodlord infestor, or early WoL where PvZ had protoss trying to get a deathball and then just roll out.
Ladies and gentlemen, here is an extract from an interview FireCake gave to Millenium and released on 23rd August 2013 after WCS Season 2 Challenger League. Thank you Dayastumee on Millenium for having found it.
The day before my match against MaNa, I was convinced I would be eliminated quickly. As my studies were starting soon, I wouldn't have been able to train for the rest of the tournament so I played my matches just in case a miracle happens.
Moreover, I knew that MaNa had a barcode and not me, I was expecting to face very strong build orders to counter mines (like our last match in group stage). So I decided to play completely different playstyles than what I usually play to surprise my opponent (and also to avoid 3 or 4 hour games if I went for SH/Viper).

Frankly at that point I think protoss by doing that is doing his best to achieve best possible result - draw. There is no reasonable argument for punishing that. I doubt there is any way that protoss can actually win if game is at that stage. Like in chess, if you can't win, play for draw.

Wouldn't mind if he had did that. All he can reach is a draw in this situation, so its up to the Zerg to finish it or take the draw. I just wish Locusts would lose hp instead of just a timer. So their long range would be weaker. Well true wish would be that Locusts don't work alone, like they intended it in the first place, with hydras behind them and retreating after the Locusts are gone.

Except firezerg was able to win by siege hoping his swarm hosts and doing a muta remax.
He made no attempt to that game. In his position, I would have won a few hours ago.
There has almost never been a point in SC2 where neither player can win due to infinite defense on both sides. firezerg had the perfect defense that game, mana did not, he was quite weak to be honest

I just said that it is not about balance, but about design. Why are you replying with balance ?
Because saying "design" instead of "balance" is like saying "Intelligent Design" instead of "creationism".
Your point is not that the game is badly designed, your point is that Mana couldn't win against late game Swarm Hosts. That is a balance complaint. In this ideally designed game, all armies would be equally matched in the super late game. 99% of games don't get to that point, so it's pointless to design to that.
The "point" Mana was attempting to make was an exercise in idiocy, as far as I'm concerned.

Akilon is the only map that allow games like this one to be honest. And as stupid as it was as a game, this playstyle is the only way to stop the evenly stupid Skytoss.

As long as it's possible to stop them from getting to that point, who cares?

Frankly at that point I think protoss by doing that is doing his best to achieve best possible result - draw. There is no reasonable argument for punishing that. I doubt there is any way that protoss can actually win if game is at that stage. Like in chess, if you can't win, play for draw.
How are you going to use SH against forcefields on the ramp ? How are you going to lose enough units to do effective muta switch without risking loss ? How are you going to use your muta remax against archon/storm/guardian/tempest ?

Works on every map tbh, since Zerg can move from base to base. Akilon just allows to get there almost effortlessly.

No, there is difference between design and balance. SH are stupidly designed unit, period. If Mana won by some miracle, it would still be true. Plus you can have balanced matchup, yet valid design concerns. If Protoss can achieve 50% winrate by appropriate mixing in of all-ins, it is balanced matchup, but can still be stupidly designed matchup.

You can circumvent the swarm hosts and the static def on other maps. Protecting outlying expansions is incredibly hard for zerg on some maps with this comp.
Akilon is just a bad map overall, basically any map where zerg gets a cluster of 4-5 easy bases where they reach either approach with locusts is just begging for this sort of play. If it works, it's almost a free win for zerg.

SHs are mobile, but not THAT mobile. Same with static d, festors and gglords.

Balance whine doesn't mean complaining that there's not a 50% winrate. Balance whining means complaining that race X is overpowered.
Why are SH a stupidly designed unit? Obviously the comp Firecake was on was pretty much unbeatable, but why did Mana let him get to that point?
I just don't see most PvZ's ending up in SH stalemates.

It is badly designed, because it is boring to watch, encourages boring playstyle. Why are you so fixated on the balance still or what composition is unbeatable. Unbeatable compositions are ok, if they can end the game quickly. Even BL+infestor in WoL was better at it. The concept of spawning units that can cross half of the map is plainly bad as it only encourages defensive playstyle, especially when coupled with theoretically infinite moving defensive structures.

nah as a protoss you can block your main ramp and then just camp it out and whatever the Zerg tries they will lose more resources. Because the Protoss can actually use their static defense in that situation. So Vipers are snipeable and will only get 1 ht at best per dead viper.

Just watched the VoD. That game put the Dota game they mentioned to shame. The game sounds make it sound like things are happening but it's just neverending locust kills.
Imo, feels like the admins should have stepped in and done something here. Force something, or draw the game and redo it. There's no reason why a starcraft game should have gone on for 3 hours.
I disagree. I think it would have been wrong for the admins to interfere. Grubby even came into the chat at like the 30-40 min mark saying there was no way for Mana to win. Basically Mana would only be playing for the draw. On the other hand, Firecake was always able to play for the win with what he had. If the admins had stepped in and declared a draw that would be unfair towards Firecake.

I agree, Mana was basically in an unwinnnable position, however, when the same thing happens for an hour and a half (just basically locust dying, and a few units of Mana every 15 minutes) and that's literally it, something needs to happen, even if it's saying make something happen in the next 5-10 minutes or something, I don't know exactly what would have been done, but something should have. A starcraft game should not go on for 3 hours for any reason at all, with I'm guessing around 2 of it was mostly the same thing happening over and over. Someone would probably get screwed in the end sure, but, it's better than wasting 2 hours doing next to nothing.

its like baseball games. A game SHOULDN"T go to 15 innings, and if it does it will probably be alot of people getting out. but the umpires shouldn't interfere.
I don't think swarmhost is the main problem here. Watching other games it rather make for exciting play forcing engagements. The problem arrises when used in combination with mass static defense. Removing the unit would rather encourage even more turtly game from the toss side since zerg have no way to deal with it. And while the toss could in this scenario finish the game faster once they reach their desire composition it still will be a turtlefeast up to that point and in the firecake game.. he probably could've ended the game sooner maybe starting those infestor drops a few hours earlier or pushing forward just a little once every year or so. On the other hand as it is now zerg is encouraged to turtle for the same reason, reversing the roles won't fix anything.
I did read the reddit post by Timetwister about the map but i still think akilon is the problem here. Making maps that is less "turtly" and there's actually more ways to harras would prevent this. A similar problem is seen in tvz with mech turtling into ravens and also something that mainly happen on this map or atl on other maps there is ways around it.

Actually the gamedesign and mechanics of swarmhost with Zerg, encourages turtling.. (Which is funny since 'long range units' / 'siege units' are suposed to counter turtling.
It is like the Tower-Tank strategy of Humans in Warcraft III; Even if Zerg is on the winning end, the game is lame for both the players and spectators.

Anyone could beat Naniwa in bm if they wanted to. People want naniwa to be some kind of like BM-god, but that is not the reality at all
It was the perfect game for showing how this game has non-sense. No way to come back vs a weaker player, no way to finish the game. The player who attacks lose the game. 3 hours of boring show, which is kinda paradoxical for a game. 3 years after the release of the game. How sad.
Now that i have watched the VOD of this game i still think about a solution for that unbreakable defence.
My best idea so far was to give the Mothership the stasis field spell of the bw arbiter. it would be not as random as the vortex and still can make a huge difference in the whole engagement. it would also help to see the mothership more often because nowadays no one ever uses it because its mostly useless in every situation.
Edit: ofc another solution would be a reworking/removing of the swarmhost ^^

only because people do not aim for this kind of composition. Firecake showed us, vs daisy then vs mana that he can get this composition on akilon no matter what. When you watch the begining of this game you see mana was like a lightyear ahead, but he still lost.
Anyway, watching Firecake vs Bling and the first game vs mana, you can't deny firecake has an awesome ZvP
Not to be offending or anything but that's almost like he has a single point about economy in this game being hard cap'd by amount of bases (granted mineral saturation does indeed working like almost-hard-cap line) and draws his rather correct conclusions from there. IMO, more bases with same amount of workers is not reliable only because it A. you actually can't defend it most of time if it is too far away. B. See A. While providing only benefit of A. more gas income (cool, if i am muta abusing zerg) B. longer time to mine out (now, that's important). EDIT: Decided to watch the Vod. Pre-game: I love this aggressive style from FireCake.

He's one of the top french player (basically: Tod/Dayshi/firecake/marinelord). He's in wcs challenger since the first season, and even go to first league this season. He's also well known by the EU Grandmaster to be one of the biggest badmanner, in competition with Naniwa. (And I think he really could win) His ZvP style is very agressive, unless he goes for that kind of build. On akilon waste he's just a beast in ZvP, grats to this... fucking boring strat. But, as Pengwin said: Like he played, he couldn't lose. So, it's not a bad decision.
Anyone could beat Naniwa in bm if they wanted to. People want naniwa to be some kind of like BM-god, but that is not the reality at all
Hm... Naniwa's still one of the biggest BM in SC2 history, you know^

And saying he won't play a tournament final if a streamer is in 'cause it lagged 1 time at the beggining of a game, isn't BM ? Seriously, in the SC2 pro history, noone ever was as BM as Naniwa.

Too far here, but Naniwa is pretty BM and has been his whole esports career, back to WC3. But not the most BM in "SC2 Pro history"

A bit. Nothing serious though. I mean Stephano did´nt play tournament finals in the past, just because he was tired and did´nt want to.
But did Naniwa suggest, that David Kim gets raped with a steel pipe? Did Naniwa repeatedly use racial slurs on ladder with no apperent reason? Did Naniwa combine an amout of flaming, stream-cheating and map-hacking of a magnitude, that his name alone is ban-worthy on TL?
The answer is no. If you think Naniwa is the most bm player in SC2 history, you are just simply wrong.

Actually the rap lyrics were:
Firecake and Mana, playing all day Swarmhost, Corruptors, so easy to play Breaking records: 3 hours on the clock Can't think of rhymes, Dustin Browder likes rocks Zerg so imba, viper OP Mana you're dead, can you finally GG
